A Collection of Swiss Costumes in Miniature. Designed by Reinhardt. Each Plate Represents a View Taken on the Spot; To Which is Added a Description in French and English. Collection de Costumes Suisses, D'Apres les Dessins de Reinhardt. Chaque Planche Represente un Costume Avec Une Vue Prise Sur Les Lieux, A Laquelle on A Joint. La Description en Anglais et en Francais. London W. T. Gilling; printed by G. Schulze 1822 First Edition Half Morocco over Marbled Boards 4to, 11 by 7.5", 28 by 19 cm. With 30 exquisite hand-colored plates. Lipperheide 907. Colas 2530. Shelfwear and rubbing to contemporary half red morocco and marbled boards. Some finger soiling to margins of plates and text leaves. Some foxing of blank preliminaries. Still, tissue guards intact and overall quite clean, with plates fresh, bright, and like small fine paintings, and the pictures are more richly detailed than the typical aquatint costume books of the same vintage. The illustrations also capture perfectly the folkish, even naive, simplicity associated with Swiss culture at the time yet with elegance. There is, in other words, no crudeness or coarseness to the figures depicted. A most extraordinary achievement, comparable to the paintings of Lory of the same period.

Bunte Bilderschau fur unsere Kleinen. 16 bunte Bilder auf Papptafeln Mainz Verlag Jos. Scholz Circa 1920s Fine Charming brightly colored cutely captioned illustrations on eight stiff cards, each measuring over 8 by 6 inches, or 20 by 16 cm, depicting a rabbit, a soup bowl, a fox terrier, an apple, a cat, a beach ball, a toy train, a goose, a garden pail, a cow, a hen, a snack, a birthday cake, a horse, a pair of shoes and socks, and a carrier pigeon, all contained in the original box. Intended as a home-based learning tool, these illustrations are extraordinarily charming and almost inconceivably so given the much more mundane and cheap successors to them in any language. The cards are in fine condition, and the box is very much intact and functional, with some minor edgewear, light soilage and evidence of a successful discreet repair.

Contes Du Temps Jadis Paris L'Edition D'Art, H. Piazza 1912 1st Limited Edition Hardcover Fine Brunelleschi, Umberto Book. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Limited signed first edition, this being #247 of 400. 123, [4] pp. Plus 20 tipped-in color plates illustrated by Brunelleschi. (12 by 9 inches, or 30 by 24 cm.) Umberto Brunelleschi was a brilliant Italian painter, book illustrator and fashion designer, probably best known nowadays for his erotica. Here, though, he applies his bold flair with color and his puissant imagination to fairy tales, and resulting is something truly extraordinary! This material would seem his true calling, for here his sensual proclivities are expressed with none of the lurid excess that one might find in some of his other work. And the images are sheer delight which enchant and arrest the eye. The costuming and elegance of the figures depicted are evocative of dance, and the images surely benefit from Brunelleschi's fashion career. And there is still the languid androgyny that spills forth the erotic sensibility. This, and the immersion in atmospherics, make the pictures also squarely belong to the high Art Nouveau fancy, an association reinforced by the foliate borders, which curiously, have a formal lineality not necessarily affiliated with that fin-de-siecle aesthetic movement. What is most conspicuously Art Nouveau, it should be recognized, is the panache of the whole book production represented here. This is truly a book that in and of itself is artwork. Fairy tales contained herein include "La Belle Aux Cheveux D'Or", "L'Oiseau Bleu", "Gracieuse et Percinet", "L'Adroite Princesse" and "Le Prince Cheri". The original wraps are in this copy bound in half vellum which is laid over marbled boards. There is some light spotting in the upper reaches of the vellum and minor soil spots within, but overall this is a tight, clean copy. The tissue guards are all present and the paper is of a nice thick card stock.

Des Koniglich Baierisch Militarisch Hohen St. Georgii Ritter Ordens Wappen Calender Munchen Fleischmann 1817 Vellum Very Good 16mo. With 119 Engraved Plates, one folding, of portraits, coat-of-arms, and sometimes ornate decoration and imagery beside. A mix of line and stipple engravings. This is a collection of the escutcheons of German princes. Followed by almanac and calendar. The almanac part has death notices, not recent at time, that might have been included as a fee by noble families wishing to honor their forbears. The principle part of the almanac is a historic table with dates of ascession (coronation) and death of princes during mostly the eighteenth century. The binding is of added interest, being a red vellum. The binding has considerable wear, especially along the edges, and spine labels are chipped. Tight and mostly clean within, with FFEP partly loose. Two bookplates, both attractive, of Dudrea and Sumner Parker, who had a museum in Lutherville, Maryland in their home called "The Cloisters" which was bequeathed by them to the City of Baltimore.

Heures du Moyen Age Paris Gruel & Englemann 1887 First edition Full Morocco Fine Lavish 19th century rendering of a Book of Hours using bright chromolithography that cogently replicates the exquisite detail, sublimity and sheer miraculousness of the Medieval biblio staple. Each of the 192 plates (including title page) is unique with the high Gothic ornamentation that is usually encountered only under glass at better art museums. Usually the ornament frames Gothic type of the text in French and Latin, but occasionally the framed is instead a miniature painting. Credits for this production are Engelmann, artistic director and chromolithography; painting, Ed. Moreau; actual printing on stone, A. Pralon. Lush silk moire endpapers. Dentelle ornamentation on leather perimeter. All leaves are bright and clean, and the binding is tight. Gilt TEG. Silk ribbon placemark intact. Metal mounts on boards with crown and initials HE and floreate design for clasp stays. A minor scratch of brown morocco on front board and the most minor of shelfwear besides. Book measures 6.5 by 5 inches, or 16 by 13 cm. Other than loss of leather strap clasps, this is about as good as it gets.

Nature and Art (2 Volumes Bound in one) London Day and Son, Limited Hardcover Very Good Plus Book. 1866 and 1867, 2 volume publication bound in one. These were the only two issues of the publication. iv, 252, iv, 196 pp. Over 50 color chromolithographs, missing frontis chromo to 1866 volume. The main point of this publication was to demonstrate the potential for the new form of color printing, chromolithography. The diverse range of articles thus facilitated the rendering of a similarly broad range of illustration: botanical, zoological, travel related, decorative arts, etc. Also, some of the illustrations are similar or the same of ones found in other publications, such as the plate of chickens for an article by W. B. Tegetmeier who also did a much sought after plate book on poultry. Other than the one missing plate, this copy is in near fine condition. It is tight and clean, with quarter buckram over marbled boards for the binding and the wrap covers (title pages) bound in. Some minor wear to the binding.

Serie Superieure Aux Armes D'Epinal. Histoires & Scenes Humoristiques. Contes Moraux Merveilleux (No. 19) Imagerie Pellerin First edition Hardcover Very Good N.d, circa 1910. (No. 19 of series.) 25 elephantine leaves or plates (15.5 by 12.5 inches, 43 by 33 cm), including title page. Plates 451 to 475 in the series. All with cartoon stories and verses accompanied by color illustrated panels in all kinds of configurations on the page. Sometimes just two different illustrations, sometimes as many as, or even more than, a dozen. Highlights from a purely visual gag, as well as perhaps historical point-of-view, is the plate entitled "De Utilite des Aeroplanes", which pokes fun at the perils of early plane aviation, and another plate that features a flying machine that resembles a grasshopper, but the satire, parody and humor is far-ranging and boundless. Plates are all clean and binding is tight. Boards, with illustrated paper pasted onto board, has considerable wear, soiling and foxing, with some chipping and minor edge loss of the paper. However, the illustration of a bow in a clown outfit is still attractive and indeed, a component in making for a handsome package overall.

The Work of Stowitts for The Fox God. Lyric Ballet in 3 Acts. Poem by Templeton Crocker. Music by Joseph Redding Hollywood, CA George Palmer Putnam Inc. 1939 Limited Signed Edition Buckram cloth Near Fine No. 371 of 400 limitation. Printed by Bernard Freres and plates engraved by Deichel-Ploquin in 1928. Folio, 15.5 by 13.5 inches, 40 by 34 cm. 44 pp, followed by 50 color plates with text on versos. With a total of 53 tipped-in, full page color plates, and 6 other tipped-in color illustrations, along with some red and gilt text illustrations or ornamentation. This is an elaborately produced, unique volume containing the classic Chinese Opera "Fay-Yen-Fah", along with the traditional designs, costumes and decor, as illustrated in Stowitts decorations and color plates. Hubert Julian "Jay" Stowitts (1892-1953) was a true polymath -- a gifted athlete, he willed himself to become a dancer after being swept away watching a performance, and within a few years he was discovered by the famed Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova and traveled as a successful dancer throughout the Americas and Europe, becoming the first American to star with a Russian ballet troupe. After a solo career, Stowitts retired from dancing and began a new career as a painter and occasional film actor. He traveled and lived in the Far East and South Asia, where he produced 155 paintings he called "Vanishing India." At the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, his exhibition of fifty-five paintings of nude male American athletes caused a "sensation." The Nazis closed the exhibit down, partly because it showed depictions of Jewish and African-American athletes. Stowitts was fascinated by Eastern religion and philosophy and much of his later work reflects his exploration of these ideas. In this Stowitts can be viewed rightly as a kind of visionary and precursor for ideas that gained wider acceptance in the West in the 1960s and after. The buckram binding, which appears to be a bit later, has washed out color and minor deterioration in the front upper spine area and a few limited spots of washed out discoloration. Otherwise, the binding is tight and the interior is bright and fresh.

[Manuscript] B. Whippy & Son Crest Book England Full Calf Very Good N.d., circa eighteenth century. With 161 leaves, the first 120 having crests, escutcheons and heraldic imagery on both the rectos, the last 41 leaves with imagery only on the recto, for a total of 281 pages with illustrative content. The heraldic symbols are all drawn with ink, generally six to a page, sometimes more, sometimes less, and always with a cursive handwritten caption of the individual or title to which it belongs. The symbols run the full gamut of heraldic figures, from animals, both naturalistic and stylized, to human figures, to crowns, weaponry, flora, stars, more abstract designs, etc. All are done with a sure and precise hand, making the log, for that is what it amounts to, a highly appealing manuscript, the purpose of which one can only surmise. All we know from the spine label and the front board pastedown label is that the book was of B. Whippy & Son, who we might assume were responsible for the creation of the book. Some soiling of the leaves, but generally the plates are attractive. Contemporary boards, with heavy scuffing but appropriate and desirable. Rebacked with a complementary green calf and in a way that is impressive and substantial. Newer endpapers. One paper repair.
