Wallpaper Sample Folio Germany 1917 German wallpaper book featuring Art Nouveau or Jugendstil era wallpapers, with base papers presented in sets with suggested borders and/or complementary papers. No company name given. Date stamped on FEP. The thick folio is comprised with well over 100 sets of paper, or full panels, with sets including up to a half dozen other papers cut in small dimensions. These small swatches are every bit as interesting as the large samples, and the combinations implied should also have interest for what they have to say about decorative taste of the era. The patterns contained herein offer an intriguing mix of those that would widely be regarded as dated today and others that are very much akin to papers currently available. It is impossible to generalize about these papers which include stripes, florals, , geometrics, and combinations of these. Perhaps one point that can be distilled is that a certain formality tends to pervade the papers notwithstanding the languidity thought to characterize Art Nouveau, but this merely demonstrates that tastes did not move in lockstep with heralded fashionable movements when it came to domestic decoration. Over 13 inches tall and 9 inches across, the folio is in very good state of preservation. There are two papers which are torn with only small portions remaining by the spine, and it is possible other papers have vanished, although it should be apparent the total amount of loss can not much exceed that which has occurred since the binder is quite full. Soome light shelf wear and rubbing to the boards which are a patterned paper paste-down.

A few discreet repairs to spine extremities, now stabilized and attractive. A light and narrow band of soilage across front board of Vol 1. Shelfwear to corners. Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts;Dulwich Picture Gallery William Beckford, 1760-1844: An Eye for the Magnificent Cumberland, Rhode Island, U.S.A. Yale Univ Pr 2001 0300090684 / 9780300090680 First Edition Cloth Like New Like New Jacket 4to - over 9¾. Book. Like new in all respects. 448 pp. , profusely illustrated. Book is especially heavy so I may have to adjust postage if overseas. William Beckford was one of the richest men in Regency England, the heir to a fabulous Jamaican sugar fortune, and a man of outsized talent, effete sensibility, extravagant ambitions and hedonism. For all his self-indulgence, he was not merely a frivolous fop, but the author of a minor classic, Valtek, and also a voracious bibliophile. He was a book buyer who actually attempted to read everything he bought. In the end, he ended up burning through much of his inherited fortune, and his fabulous Fonthill Abbey, a tourist attraction in its day, collapsed during his lifetime. In any case, this book in a series of essays addresses the multifaceted Beckford and how he fit into his society, etc.

Behncke, W., O. Von Falke, E. Pernice and G. Swarzenski (Vol 1); E. W. Braun, M. Dreger and J. Folnesics, O. Kummel, G. Lehnert (Vol 2) Illustrierte Geschichte Des Kunstgewerbes (2 Vols), Vol 1: Im Altertum, Im Mittelalter and Zur Zeit Der Renaissance, Vol 2 Im Barock, Rokoko, Louis XVI, Empire Und Neuester Zeit, Im Gebiete Des Islams Und in Ostasien Berlin Verlag Von Martin Oldenbourg 1907 First Edition Hardcover Good Book. 4to - over 9¾. N.d. Circa 1907. Ambitious German survey on all the decorative arts and interior design from leading experts on the subject from the early twentieth century. Some emphasis on the business aspect, or the trade of, these various media. Profusely illustrated with full page plates, a good many in color, most photographs, some chromolithography, and many text illustrations and photographs. A great part of this survey's achievement is its synthesis of these disparate forms of the decorative arts, and it brings to everything a scholarly discipline that was still novel at the time of publication. Both volumes are tight internally and clean, with age toning to the pages. Decorated full vellum has some soilage and wear. Vol 1 has some starting at lower front board and perhaps a little shake.
