Deck of 49 cards depicting the kings of France Near Fine N.d., circa 1800. There is one card for each French monarch, beginning with Pharamond and continuing to Louis XVII who died in 1795. Each card has a numismatic-like portrait followed by a brief biography, generally two or three paragraphs long. The backs of the cards are blank other than a neat ownership inscription of "A. O. Sullivan". The cards measure 10 by 7 cm, or 4 by 2. 75 inches, each. There is some light soilage here and there and light toning throughout. All cards are stiff as they should be and without creasing. There is no box.

Champsaur, Felicien; Dessin par Andre Gill Les Hommes D'Aujourd'Hui Paris 1878-1881 Quarter Calf Near Fine 4to, 29n by 19 cm. A complete run of 142 weekly installments of four page brochures of the most famous Frenchmen of the day (and a few others such as Garibaldi), each with a color lithograph caricature on the front page followed by a three page loose biography and appreciation. All of this is attractively bound in quarter red calf over marbled boards. Beginning with Victor Hugo, figures covered include Leon Gambetta, Sarah Bernhardt, Alphonse Daudet, Andre Gill himself, Georges Clemenceau, Louis Blanc, Ferdinand DeLesseps, and on and on. They come from all spheres of professional activity. Many are now obscure, but even if you don't know the indvidual, you can appreciate and enjoy the visual send-up of him. Tight and clean. A little shelfwear along edges of the boards. Minor scuffing of the calf and boards.
