4 Miniature Box with Image of Mary and Baby Jesus on Top
Metal Very Good
Circa 1900, this is a small tin pill box, measuring 1.5 inches or 4 cm tall. The top is decorated with a crowned mother and crowned child in her lap aloft a cloud, and thus suggestive of Mary and the infant Jesus. The image, which is covered by a clear plastic material, is probably produced by color lithography or chromolithography, but it is impossible to be sure without removal of the covering. It is framed by gilded tin, it would appear. The spine has simple decoration and bands of indentations. The whole thing bears a convincing resemblance to a miniature book, but it opens to a hallow space for storage. The metal has darkened with age and there is a hint of rust on the sides.

6 Music Box Shaped like a Book
Full Calf Good Plus
Music box plays two tunes. Fully functioning, with stop and lever adjustment for choice of tunes. Very convincing simulcrum of a book. Opens with small storage space, probably meant for small toiletries. Full blindstamped calf has considerable wear. Sides or foreedges of metal with lines to suggest pages. Also colored headbands. 5.5 x 4.5 x 2.5 inches, 140 x 110 x60 mm. Key to wind up is newish, or not original. As a music box, this is in very good condition. It can be a little fickle or fussy, but generally responsive and tunes ring out with clear and charming timbre. As a book form, with the wear described, this might be considered good minus. A nifty novelty.

Circa 1900 piece of silver jewelry, tasteful and lovely charm for the book-lover. The inside of the book has two oval frames in which keepsake photos of loved ones were to be placed. 10 Traveling inkwell shaped like a miniature book: Baedeker's Wien.
Good
Late 19th century. Made to look like travel guide to Vienna. With gilt depiction of Stefankirche on front board. Measures 2.5 by 2.5 by 1 inches, or 6 by 6 by 3 cm, and weighs 3 ounces. Loss of morocco along edges from wear. Metal of spine seems raised over boards, although this may be how it was originally fabricated. Effect is still a slight loss of centering. Still opens and closes as should and overall appearance is attractive and a convincing impostor. Extremely rare novelty.

12 Vienna Bronze Book Box

Weighs over 2 lbs.

13 [Faux Book Bank] Book in Thrift VIII

Issued by the Binghamton Savings Bank, Binghamton, N.Y. and bearing the Roman imperial figure similar to that on a silver dollar of the day. The bottom edge indicates that the box was made or sold by the Bankers Utilities Co. and was patented in July, 1923, and the ornamental styling on the boards of the box are very much Art Deco-ish such as one sees in the imposing bank buildings of the era. This is an eye-catching faux book, with this ornamentation and the red leather field. To open a key was used. (No key remains.) 4.5 by 3.5 inches in size. Some minor edgewear.

14 [Faux Book] Primo Grade Cigar Box in Book Form
Paper pasted onto wood boards Very Good
A most unusual cigar box. Its emulation of a fine decorative binding, particular on its boards and foreedges, is convincing, and it also features a decorative tin clasp. N.d., circa 1900. (It lacks a tax stamp, although there is a State of Pennsylvania stamp, and Philadelphia was in fact a center of cigar-making at the time.) The box measures 9 by 5 by 1.4 inches, or 23 by 13 by 3.5 cm. There is rubbing along the hinges and scuffs on the paper.

15 [Faux Book] Boite a Cartes Suze Aperitif
Good
N.d., circa 1900. Suze, a well-known spirits company in France, was established in 1889 and remains in business to this day. This book-shaped wooden card box has a piece of wood that slides open on the fore-edge. The handsome box measures 12 by 7 cm, 5 by 2.75 inches. The blue surface paint is rubbed and worn through, giving it an attractive aged patina. On the top a longish sliver of wood had become cracked without falling off. This has been repaired.

18 [Faux Book] Majolica Flash Shaped Like a Book

Probably early twentieth century, probably of Italian origin but possibly Portuguese alternatively. With Delft blue floral embellishments on front and back and yellow raised bands on spine. With cork top -- the cork is not original and doesn't fit perfectly. On fore-edge is written in bold blue strokes "The Gift is Small Goodwill is All". Small chip in corner inconspicuous unless looking directly at it.

19 [Faux Book] Needle Case
Full Leather Very Good
N.d., circa mid-19th century. A wonderful, diminuitive needle case shaped like a book, with a bucolic engraving under the lid. The engraving of a lake shore landscape is one of the means of dating the object, which is but 4.5 by 2.5 cm in size. A pretty gilt floral device decorates the spine and needle is spelled in gilt atop. The whole interior is lined with paper pastedowns, with a polka dotted design on the ends. Within are needle sleeves from Palmer Cutler, Royal and Kirby's, all handsome but not necessarily original to the box.
