Comparatively light wear to the black binder. Middling soiling of the title, and some finger smudging and other use evident in margins of other leaves. 3 C. Estrade. Plates based on work of Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf (1738 - 1815) Toiles imprimees de la Perse & de l'Inde d'apres les documents recueillis par Oberkampf
Paris Ernst Henri Folio Very Good
N.d., circa 1920s. Folio 15 by 11.5 inches, with 36 mounted loose plates, as issued, and three pages of text, including title, introduction (in French), and table of plates. The introduction explains briefly the work of Oberkampf collecting the samples in the eighteenth century, most of which were preserved in the Bibliotheque de l'Union Centrale des Arts Decoratifs. The lush patterns, full of flowers, butterflies and foliage in varying degrees of realism versus abstraction, were used directly by the Jouy Factory as well as adapted in original designs created by its artisans. Toile de Jouy, of course, has enjoyed a great resurgence in popularity in recent years, and the beauty of these designs will excite many today as much as they did in the past. The designs here have lost none of their flair, in other words. The folio has a floral pattern cloth spine over a gray marbled paper pastedown. A minor corner abrasion to the marbled pastedown. The cloth has light soiling. Some mounts are chipped. Mounts laid in folder. Folder slightly worn and toned.

6 Viollet-le-Duc, Texte et Dessins par Histoire D'Une Maison
Paris Bibliotheque D'Education et de Recreation, J. Hetzel et Cie. Decorated Cloth Very Good
N.d., circa 1870s. 8vo, 260 pp. The gifted, energetic and controversial Viollet-le-Duc had a profound effect on architectural thought. Responsible for the restoration of Reims Cathedral and the ambitious, successful restoration and appreciation of the Medieval walled city of Carcassone, Voillet-le-Duc was more concerned with capturing the beauty and overarching finest qualities of the past rather than the fine details that were strictly-speaking historically accurate. In this he was at loggerheads with the more literal purist, the art critic John Ruskin, whose views have in recent times been more in favor despite his not having been a trained architect. In any case, this book is one of the best surveys of the anatomy of house and is especially good in describing the various trades which contribute to the building of a house. Organized as a novelistic dialogue, the treatment also superbly avoids the trap of a dry exegesis that usually afflicts even popular surveys. Clean and tight within. Light sunning to the spine. Minor repair of the upper spine tip was made.
