[Trade Catalogue] Tentures Artistiques. Gebroeders Voogel, Amserdam, Béraud, artist presumed
8 Béraud, artist presumed [Trade Catalogue] Tentures Artistiques. Gebroeders Voogel, Amserdam
Amsterdam Cloth Very Good
N.d., late 19th century. Folio, 49 by 34 cm. With forty hand-colored plates of window and bed treatments -- elaborate drapery, canopies, head and foot boards. While the basic outlines of the plates were printed, the plates come off as through and through watercolors or original artwork. The styles of the drapery and bed sets is often Art Nouveau, with a strong dollop of the Louis's -- the Rococo of the XV, the classical of the XVI, some XIII baroque, etc. Across the board these were designs for august, rich settings, from the time that Art Nouveau was the rage, and a strong taste for the formal eclecticism that prevailed during that time. This catalogue was almost not published as such, but rather, is a compilation of individual plates prepared for the company and served as a salesman's sampler or possibly as an in-house record. Other than inked captioned stock numbers, the individual plates are very decorative and one can easily imagined any one of them being framed as an artwork unto itself. Scarce -- no copies of this or anything else by this company located on OCLC First Search. Condition: the spine has a few tears and small rub holes. The plates are all spectacular.

Paris Librairie de la Famille Cloth Folio Good
Scarce album of home furnishings decor and decorative arts, capturing varied, mostly ornate, styles in vogue at time. No copies found on OCLC, nor is this in the BNF catalogue. N.d., circa 1880. Folio, 39 by 28 cm. Title, blank, 2 pp. -- table of contents, 26 color plates, each with a separate leaf of description. (Descriptions can be one or two pages -- if one page, the verso is blank.) Furnishings shown are overwhelmingly of the type one would have found in the homes of the upper middle class. Some of the specimens might well have also furnished more august residences; in our view, this is a reflection of a congruence of taste and accessibility across class lines. Most of the plates have a dozen discrete specimens; this somehow seems in line with the eclecticism and overstuffed look that was so rampant then. Whether the pieces shown are one's own taste, one can not but be impressed with the strong, rich color embellishing the objects. The symmetrical artful randomness of the object placement is in keeping with the ornament books which were so influential during the mid-19th century -- Owen Jones, Racinet, and the like. Condition: pages heavily age toned. Some minor edge chips and bumps. Cover has small corner stamped. Soiling around front board edge. Spine has one inch tear on both upper joints.

Salesman's Sample Album of Lamp and Lampshade Designs, with 25 Original Watercolors, and Many Mounted Photographs of the Designs, M.W.
12 M.W. Salesman's Sample Album of Lamp and Lampshade Designs, with 25 Original Watercolors, and Many Mounted Photographs of the Designs
France Hardcover. Cloth spine. Leatherette boards. Scr Very Good
Many beautiful designs attractively rendered in watercolors, with a mix of floral designs, Chinoiserie, and a sparer Modernist sensibility. N.d., circa 1940s. Small folio, 32.5 by 28 cm. 64 leaves with content, 25 of which feature the watercolors, the balance of 39 having one or two mounted photos each. Tissue guards in front of most of the watercolors and many of the other leaves. We do not know who the artist or designer was, or what company is being represented, but it is our strong belief that this was a collection of designs created for one company, and the album was a working salesman sample catalogue, with specifications for lamps and lampshades sometimes written in long-hand, with varying degrees of detail. While the emphasis is clearly on the lampshades, the company was clearly also selling lamps, or the vases beneath the lampshades, as can be inferred by handwritten captions which say "avec Pagoda", and the like. What is more, the lampshade designs are often repeated, or coordinated, with the vases, and thus the two are meant to be of one piece. Our dating is based on the album itself, meaning the binding, and then what we can intuit from the aesthetic. There can no question that the album is mid-20th century. We believe that it is unlikely to be from the thirties or earlier, as there are really no fringed lampshades which were so common then, and the shapes are such as were fashionable during the post-war era, well into the 1970s. As there are a considerably greater number of photos than watercolors, these both show the watercolored designs as realized and variants on these designs, with some additional designs not really represented in the watercolors. The watercolors are unquestionably the highlights, all done with a loose dreaminess that is as or more exciting than their physical actualization. These watercolors somehow cast a diaphonous spell, virtually dissolving and re-appearing before one's eyes. The photos, though, provide a rather more thorough record of this company's designs and range. Condition: moderate wear. Scribbles and a few stains as incident to this being a working document.

Histoire D'Une Maison, Viollet-le-Duc, Texte et Dessins par
15 Viollet-le-Duc, Texte et Dessins par Histoire D'Une Maison
Paris Bibliotheque D'Education et de Recreation, J. Hetzel et Cie. Decorated Cloth Very Good
N.d., circa 1870s. 8vo, 260 pp. The gifted, energetic and controversial Viollet-le-Duc had a profound effect on architectural thought. Responsible for the restoration of Reims Cathedral and the ambitious, successful restoration and appreciation of the Medieval walled city of Carcassone, Voillet-le-Duc was more concerned with capturing the beauty and overarching finest qualities of the past rather than the fine details that were strictly-speaking historically accurate. In this he was at loggerheads with the more literal purist, the art critic John Ruskin, whose views have in recent times been more in favor despite his not having been a trained architect. In any case, this book is one of the best surveys of the anatomy of house and is especially good in describing the various trades which contribute to the building of a house. Organized as a novelistic dialogue, the treatment also superbly avoids the trap of a dry exegesis that usually afflicts even popular surveys. Clean and tight within. Light sunning to the spine. Minor repair of the upper spine tip was made.
