Album of a Dozen Chinese Watercolors of Colorful Birds on Pith Paper, 19th Century
1 Album of a Dozen Chinese Watercolors of Colorful Birds on Pith Paper, 19th Century
Silk covered boards Good
N.d., circa 1850. 12mo, 16 by 12 cm. Each painting mounted on thin paper and framed with blue strips, as typical of such albums made presumably for the tourist and expatriate market. The paintings have a disarming naive quality. Yet in our view the paintings have more color and detail than the average such album of this size (larger format pictures tend to be more nuanced when it comes to this genre). The silk patterned cover has had its joints repaired. The usual amount of fissures, or tears, to the pith paper. Most of the paintings have no or very light defects of this type.

2 Album of a Dozen Chinese Watercolors of Ships and Boats on Pith Paper
Hardcover. Silk pastedown. Good
N.d., 19th century. Oblong, 13 by 16.5 cm. Wonderful luminous coloring, with small people, waterfowl and waves represented as well as a wide variety of Chinese boats, from junks and houseboats to impressive galleons. The pith paper has the typical scattered tears, chips and losses. Edge wear, slight tattering and soiling of the silk. Still all the pictorial representations are intact, bright and visually exciting.

3 Album of Chinese Paper Cut-outs
Silk pasted onto boards, bound together with strin Fine
N.d., circa early to mid-twentieth century. 20 pp., with a paper cut-out on every page. On the recto is a cut-out with color fabric intricately cut to fill in the gaps and enliven the images of people. On the verso is the more classic silhouette or shadow image cut-out of buildings, trees, small human figures and animals. The images are diminuitive in size, only filling a small corner of the oblong pages, which measure 10.5 by 7 inches, or 27 by 18 cm, other than the first page in which two birds flank a pretty abstract centerpiece. The art, of course, is in part the miniaturization, which requires lapidary skill, and we revel in the beauty and cogency of the imagery reduced to so small a scale. The album also is really more than the sum of its parts and exercises a cumulative effect on its admirer. Clean throughout.

Album of Eight Pith Paintings
4 Album of Eight Pith Paintings
China Decorative Fabric on Boards, with ribbon ties Very Good
N.d., 19th century. 17 by 14 cm. Simple renderings of dignified men and women, all but one a single portrait per page. The portraits are not unified by a theme such as trades or the like. The most exciting image is of a man holding a kite string, with a kite in the shape of an insect. Another shows a man holding a branch in what we believe was a religious rite. There is one image of a man and women who are playing a board game. The cover is chewed along the edges, and the binding is rather loose. Typical chips and tears to the rice paper.

5 Album of Red Chinese Paper Cut-outs
Silk pasted onto boards, bound together with strin Fine
N.d., circa early twentieth century. 20 pp., with classic red paper cut-out on every page, almost all very intricate and capturing a picturesque aspect of Chinese life or imagery. The imagery never occupies more than half of the page, which measures 10 by 6.5 inches, 26 by 16 cm, but it is in the miniaturization that lies much of the art, and we can but marvel at the lapidary skill of the craftsman or artist responsible for the silhouettes created.

6 Album with Eight Original 19th Century Chinese Paintings
Hardcover. Leporello. Very Good
N.d., 19th Century. Album, closed, oblong, 30 by 367 cm. The paintings measure 21 by 27 cm. All the paintings have Chinese captions written inconspicuously with a calligraphic hand. The paintings depict two men picking fruit off a tree, a man astride a galloping horse, a Chinese satyr (hairy man upper half, cloven hooved footed), a traveling man and boy, a primitive man with absurdly drooping breasts, a warrior (?) sitting against an animal that looks like a cross between a horse and a big cat, a near nude man sowing seeds, and a group of hunters with bows and arrows. All the paintings are on a brownish paper, and share a similar muted palette, although there are touches of bright red and some other colors in the dress. Even without knowing whether there is an intended narrative or other unifying principle, we find the whole quite cohesive and arresting. Condition: wear to the cloth on the cover, with some fabric loss and abrading. A few tiny chips to the edges of the paintings.

Chinese Erotic Leporello or Pillow Book
8 Chinese Erotic Leporello or Pillow Book
China Leporello Very Good
N.d., 19th century. Closed, 18.5 by 10.5 cm, and 5 cm thick. 18 panels (13 with the pictorial), and so when wide open, stretching to almost 190 cm, depicting lovers in pari delicti. The ladies have bound feet, and they pleasure one another in one three way scene. Adrongyny abounds, as often the case in these leporellos, and a Peeping Tom (here, a woman) and a feline onlooker add a touch of humor to the proceedings. The leporello illustration is continuous and fluid and so can be viewed as itself representing a sort of orgy. All color printed on silk fabric which is pasted onto the heavy boards of the thick leporello. Moderate wear to the boards. Narrow, sliver dampstain affecting a few leaves. Some scattered fading and wear to the silk.

Chinese Miao Album of Original Watercolors
9 Chinese Miao Album of Original Watercolors
Paper. Good
19.5 by 14 cm. 12 leaves, including cover, with 20 original paintings (or 20 pages with paintings, as in a few instances, the two facing pages might be interpreted as a single painting). Most of the images are of provincial sorts, and the artist is at times mocking their simplicity and blockheadedness. The style, called Miao, arose in the 18th century and gained popularity among nobles and gentry. One can see in most of the images that the characters have broad features that are not associated with Han Chinese, and the figures are often underdressed, perhaps to suggest an uncouthness. The paintings here have a crudity about them, but also, great zest and color. Chinese calligraphy on the cover and the first page. Otherwise, no text. Dog-earing to the corners. General wear.

Picture Story of Mu Lan
12 Picture Story of Mu Lan
Silk pasted onto boards Near Fine
N.d, circa early 20th Century. With ten hand-colored illustrations on silk, each painted directly onto the material. The leporello or concertina tells the story of a Chinese Joan of Arc figure, except this woman does not suffer a tragic end to her heroic, martial achievements and is able to revert to the life of a virtuous woman. This is a truly a feast to the eyes, with the bright colors of each plate producing a shimmering effect. The simple story, undoubtedly a pared down version of a lengthier legend, is recounted on the facing pages in both Chinese and English. The leporello measures 8 by 5.5 inches, 20.5 by 14 cm, when closed. Other than edgewear to the silk fabric pasted onto the boards and perhaps a touch of sunning to the silk along the edges, a pristine copy. Scarce, with no copies located on OCLC.

13 Ten Chinese Gouache Paintings on Pith Paper of Ceremonial, Pedagogical and Domestic Scenes
Very Good
Especially bright pith or rice paper paintings. N.d., circa early to mid-19th century. Oblong, 23 by 33 cm. The paintings are 19 by 28 cm within the blue paper framing. The paintings include one showing religious observance before a shrine, an audience in a nobleman's receiving chamber, a servant bathing a bay while another serves a cup of tea, students studying, a woman breast feeding, an elderly man being carried in a chaise, etc. All the artwork is both simple yet highly detailed and nuanced, and the album is of extraordinary beauty, with the colors rich, deep and luminous. With the usual minor losses to the rice paper. Front board has a crack.

Ten Colorful Intricate Cray Paper Cut-outs of Chinese Masks and Masked Performers
14 Ten Colorful Intricate Cray Paper Cut-outs of Chinese Masks and Masked Performers
Envelope Fine
No date (that we can discern). From the mid-20th century. The ten cut-outs are highly colorful and visually exciting. Given the thinness and overall nature of the paper they are made of, they are also delicate and fragile, although ours are in mint condition, protected as they are by folded paper. The ten pieces and their protective paper come in an envelope made of thin card stock. Besides a slip with what must be a short exegesis, Chinese characters are written on this windowed envelope as well as the paper guards. The collection was probably sold as a souvenir, probably in conjunction with a theatrical performance, and the cut outs might have then often been pasted onto other objects. The envelope measures 15.5 by 11.5 cm, and the cut outs are generally around 11 cm tall.

17 Pertista, Jan The Chinese Sensitive Leaf, with Accompanying Leaf
London Na Good Plus
N.d., circa 1820. Claimed to be able read the personality of a person by placing the leaf in a person's palm and observing what happens to it -- does it move? Does it roll up? Does it fall out of his hand? Depending on the reaction of the leaf, one can allegedly tell whether the person is of sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic or melancholy temper! Supposedly invented by Jan Pertista, from China, and sold by Mr. Gymer. The leaf is supposed to last forever if properly cared for. It would appear, based on the final paragraph of the broadside, that the whole thing might have been meant as no more than an entertainment in the spirit of later Ouiji Boards. 18.5 by 13. 5 cm. Fold marks, and soiled. The leaf, in the shape of a woman in gown and a bow in her hair, is torn in two places, with the lower part of her gown separated, but there is no loss.

18 Samuel Holmes.
Milano Tipografia Sonzogno e Comp. 1817 First Edition thus Wraps Very Good
12mo. (18 by 11 cm.) 276 pp. plus five hand-colored plates. This is the first Italian version of Holmes travels to China and it is actually based on the French translation made by Le Vaillant! The plates are quite interesting and lovely, including one of a barge, one of a pagoda, and another of the audience hall of the Imperial Palace. The leaves have a nice rag content and are thus quite clean, even uncommonly so, compared to most Italian publications of the early nineteenth century. The work is complete as of itself; it is a part of a larger series of travel journals translated into Italian at the time. In this series, this book constitutes Tomo XLIV. This copy has the original wraps. These have creases and soiling. Still, they can be regarded as well-preserved and of interest from the perspective of publishing practices of the era.
