Clarke, E. Album of Eleven Sketches Relating to the Sea, Ships, Shipwrecks and Whaling 1856 Wraps Very Good Two of the sketches are dated 1856, so the rest are presumed to be contemporaneous. Three of the sketches bear the name "E. Clarke", so all are also presumed to be by the same hand. Since the etchings were rendered on thin paper, now mounted onto the leaves of the pamphlet, it is possible that the artwork was sketched off another work. Still an appealing and interest study of aspects of whaling. The first two sketches, bearing the Clarke name, are of ships at sea. The next is of a shore outpost, with sea lions in the foreground, a mountain peak in the distance. The fourth is of a sail boat and a larger craft. Then comes two illustrations of shoes or moccasins made of "sea elephant skin" and "used by the men". The sixth is of Loon Shallo(?), where the party resided on Saddle Island. Next is a diagram of smaller rowboats when in the act of harpooning. The following leaf illustrates implements used in the whale and seal fishery. The tenth sketch is a portrait of John Nunn, also credited to E. Clarke. The final depiction is of a clipper in the distance. The wraps are soiled, and the back leaf has a large tear and gouge, not affecting the sketch within.
