1 Investment Department, E. F. Hutton & Company About Investment
San Francisco E. F. Hutton & Company. Printer: Grabhorn Press, San Francisco 1938 First Edition Wraps Fine
4to. 25 by 17 cm. Unpaginated, 12 leaves of very fine woven paper. Following title page, each page with an investment aphoristic chestnut, followed by a full page exegesis on the advice. Maxims include such adjurations as putting too many eggs in one basket, buying or selling on catchphrases (clearly not suggesting one apply this warning to the advisories provided in this pamphlet), or spreading too thin. The headers are provided in a contrasting orange ink, and each of these pages has the decorative fillip of a stylized letter device for the first letter on the page, which is done in orange and gray. These decorative touches are all done with Art Deco flair. The production value of the pamphlet is extremely high, and that was much the point, clearly. More than the text, Hutton was trying to convey class, wealth, sobriety and luxury all at once through the aesthetic appeal of its promotion.
