Author Name Gray, Thomas; W. Mason Title The Poems of Mr. Gray. To Which are Prefixed Memoirs of His Life and Writings By W. Mason, M.A. Binding Half Morocco Book Condition Very Good Edition Second edition Publisher York; London A. Ward; J. Dodsley 1775 Seller ID 001752 4to. Frontis portrait of Gray. 416, 113 pp. Much of the Memoirs, which constitutes the first part of the two separately paginated sections, is devoted to correspondence of Gray's. The letters therein are to just a few correspondents, but these are heavily tilted towards well-known personages such as Benjamin West and Horace Walpole. Interspersed in the letters is also some of Gray's verse. The poems are in the second part, and these include the Odes and of course "Elegy written in a Country Church-Yard". What should make this section particularly appealing to the modern reader is the large and simple yet elegant type used. This copy is quite clean and tight. Marbled endpapers, with armorial bookplate pasted onto FEP. The contemporary red morocco has a hint of dryness and some rubbing and the boards are scuffed and worn. Still a handsome binding of the period (or closely thereafter).
