N.d., mid twentieth century. Oblong folio album of six Japanese color woodblocks. The scenes include the Full Moon Viewed on the Seta Karahashi Bridge, the Katat Ukimido Temple in the Lake Biwa, the cherry blossoms in Nara, the large Buddha of Todaiji Temple in Nara, the maples of Takao in Kyoto, and the snow scene of Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto. The prints are striking, and in their bold colors and brush economy not at all common. Kotozuka studied at the Kyoto Specialist School of Painting and then built a career on depicting traditional Japanese scenes and ways of life in ways that blend tradition with a break from it. Each of the pictures here measure 10 by 7 3/8 inches within the card frame and the folio, or with frame, measures 14 by 10 inches, 35 by 26 cm. Scarce, with no copies turning up on OCLC. Some light soiling on the images, never disconcerting, and the portfolio shows wear and light soiling.
