Book. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 1129 pp of text, plus 36 pp. for table (index). With frontis portrait of Montaigne and decorated title, attributed to Th. de Leu by Graesse (Vol IV p 579). This is a mixed state edition. The title conforms to the 1617 title of Chez Abraham Maire, A. Envers, using a general design that first appeared in 1608 and was used by multiple publishers in that year and 1611. However, in virtually all other points this copy otherwise conforms to the 1608 edition as laid out by Sayce & Maskell, p. 77. Further tightening the bond to the 1608 edition is the attribution on the colophon to Michel Niuelle of Paris. Such an admixture was quite commonplace in early 17th century printing, and in this copy. Brunet 3710 (vol III p 1837). Note that this copy has no dedication, and there is no evidence that a dedication was ever bound in. Spine rebacked with modern calf slightly lighter than contemporary calf boards. Spine with five raised bands and stamped title, author and date (1608). It is in style etc sympathetic with the original. Boards have rubbing, wear and scuffs as one should expect yet the leather is still robust, with dryness affecting only slightly a small corner area of the front board. Modern marbled endpapers. Pages toned but clean. Small wormhole in margin of preliminaries gradually subsiding to tiniest point before disappearing entirely. Binding is very tight. Overall, a very good copy of an early edition of Montaigne's works.
