Lutzow, Carl von, editor; contributors include H. Auer, Br. Bucher, R. von Eitelberger, A. von Enderes, Jakob von Falke, Josef Langl, Fr. Lippmann, Br. Meyer, Mor. Thausing, A. Woltmann u. A. Kunst und Kunstgewerbe auf der Wiener Weltausstellung 1873 Leipzig E. A. Seemann 1875 1st Edition Hardcover Good Book. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. xii, 524 pp. With 388 woodcut illustrations in text and five copper engravings (all present, although the latter are clustered in back and not by pages as indicated in index). Similar to the English language "Art Journals", this is the best source for a contemporaneous review and critique of the decorative arts on display at the Vienna Exposition of 1873. This was the zenith of the ornate eclecticism and turgid revivals that characterized the mid-Victorian era, associated with Louis Napoleon in France, yet also just at the point there was going to be a reaction to all this. Striking also was the seriousness devoted to the decorative arts. In this volume, perhaps in contrast to the Art Journals, some influential tastemakers such as von Falke weighed in with their thoughts. For anyone interested in the sophisticated elaborate antiques of the period, this book is a trove of information, even if the German can not be read. Binding has considerable rubbing and/or wear, including red morocco spine. Gilt lettering and decoration thereon still reasonably bright. Green marbled endpapers. Binding is tight. Pages are clean if age toned. Good plus. Price:
