1 53 Gezigten van Steden, Kerken, Gebouwen, &c. in de Vereen: Nederlanden: In't Koper gesneden door J.C. Philips. Naar de Teekeningen van C. Pronk, J. de Beyer, A. de Haen, &c.
Amsterdam Is. Firion 1730-1756 Small hardcover folio. Very Good Minus
8vo. 21 by 15.5 cm. Virtually all the 53 copper engraved plates are folding, most about 25 cm wide but some as much as 48 cm wide (two folds versus four folds, with just a few that are smaller than the former). The city and church views are of Amsterdam, Middelburg, Utrecht, Arnhem, Haarlem, Graerenhagen, Rotterdam, Zierikzee, and many other Dutch towns. All together the folio makes for a glorious snapshot of how the thriving Dutch Republic looked in the mid-18th century. The collection also has an element of manuscript, with a handwritten, in ink, title page and table of contents. The plates were engraved printings, but the collection was assembled as a one off. From the handwriting, the collection was surely assembled by the mid-19th century, and the folio has kept the collection intact and heightened its appeal. There is sometimes heavy foxing in the margins. The images themselves remain vivid and mostly unaffected by the foxing. The plates are bound with a 19th century marbled paper. Its spine is shot. The outer folio has the same marbled paper on the boards, with a more recent cloth on the spine. The spine is utilitarian and neither adds nor subtracts from the appearance. Pasted within the front board is a bookplate. The "book" itself has a small label on the rear cover from a book dealer in Antwerp from 1957.

4 Des Koniglich Baierisch Militarisch Hohen St. Georgii Ritter Ordens Wappen Calender
Munchen Fleischmann 1817 Vellum Very Good
16mo. With 119 Engraved Plates, one folding, of portraits, coat-of-arms, and sometimes ornate decoration and imagery beside. A mix of line and stipple engravings. This is a collection of the escutcheons of German princes. Followed by almanac and calendar. The almanac part has death notices, not recent at time, that might have been included as a fee by noble families wishing to honor their forbears. The principle part of the almanac is a historic table with dates of ascession (coronation) and death of princes during mostly the eighteenth century. The binding is of added interest, being a red vellum. The binding has considerable wear, especially along the edges, and spine labels are chipped. Tight and mostly clean within, with FFEP partly loose. Two bookplates, both attractive, of Dudrea and Sumner Parker, who had a museum in Lutherville, Maryland in their home called "The Cloisters" which was bequeathed by them to the City of Baltimore.

Heures du Moyen Age
6 Heures du Moyen Age
Paris Gruel & Englemann 1887 First edition Full Morocco Fine
Lavish 19th century rendering of a Book of Hours using bright chromolithography that cogently replicates the exquisite detail, sublimity and sheer miraculousness of the Medieval biblio staple. Each of the 192 plates (including title page) is unique with the high Gothic ornamentation that is usually encountered only under glass at better art museums. Usually the ornament frames Gothic type of the text in French and Latin, but occasionally the framed is instead a miniature painting. Credits for this production are Engelmann, artistic director and chromolithography; painting, Ed. Moreau; actual printing on stone, A. Pralon. Lush silk moire endpapers. Dentelle ornamentation on leather perimeter. All leaves are bright and clean, and the binding is tight. Gilt TEG. Silk ribbon placemark intact. Metal mounts on boards with crown and initials HE and floreate design for clasp stays. A minor scratch of brown morocco on front board and the most minor of shelfwear besides. Book measures 6.5 by 5 inches, or 16 by 13 cm. Other than loss of leather strap clasps, this is about as good as it gets.

One plate has 1 inch discreet tear in margin -- it does not effect picture itself. Nature and Art (2 Volumes Bound in one)
8 Nature and Art (2 Volumes Bound in one)
London Day and Son, Limited Hardcover Very Good Plus
Book. 1866 and 1867, 2 volume publication bound in one. These were the only two issues of the publication. iv, 252, iv, 196 pp. Over 50 color chromolithographs, missing frontis chromo to 1866 volume. The main point of this publication was to demonstrate the potential for the new form of color printing, chromolithography. The diverse range of articles thus facilitated the rendering of a similarly broad range of illustration: botanical, zoological, travel related, decorative arts, etc. Also, some of the illustrations are similar or the same of ones found in other publications, such as the plate of chickens for an article by W. B. Tegetmeier who also did a much sought after plate book on poultry. Other than the one missing plate, this copy is in near fine condition. It is tight and clean, with quarter buckram over marbled boards for the binding and the wrap covers (title pages) bound in. Some minor wear to the binding.

9 New Gleanings from Gladstone Illustrated
Edinburgh and London William Blackwood & Sons Wraps Very Good
A contemporary anthology of caricatures inspired by William Gladstone, who surely was every caricaturist's dream come true. Unpaginated, 30 pp., not including wraps. N.d., circa 1880. With caricature on verso, and poetic caption below, almost always a quote from Shakespeare, and the facing page usually including a longer poetic passage or two from Shakespeare as well as other important English poets (and an occasional quote, not in verse, from Disraeli, or a nursery rhyme). The whole makes for an excellent, if jaundiced, survey of Gladstone's career at the helm, as well as celebrating the caricaturist's art. Tiny corner chip on front wrap. Clean within.

11 Scenes from History
Quarter Calf Very Good
N.d., circa 1690. Folio, 36.5 by 23 cm. 47 leaves (printing only on rectos), with a total of 422 copper engraved vignettes -- 420 are a more or less standard smaller size, with some differentiation in their shape, and two are somewhat larger. The scenes are from the Bible, Classical history (Rome and Greece) and carry forward to the sixteenth century. Among the then more modern history was the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans, Columbus' discovery, the ascension of Henry IV in France, the abdication of Queen Christina of Sweden in 1654, and the repulse of the Turks at the Gates of Vienna in 1683. The vignettes are highly detailed in the fine Baroque style of the period. There is no indication of where the collection of illustrations was printed, but we would conjecture in Amsterdam, given the heterodox nature of the scenes depicted, etc. The collection is complete, but the plates are not bound entirely in the correct order, as may not be surprising. There is no title page, but there are four pages which summarize the illustrations, and each vignette also has a caption. The vignettes may often have been cut from these sheets to serve as cards or paste-ons.

12 Serie Superieure Aux Armes D'Epinal. Histoires & Scenes Humoristiques. Contes Moraux Merveilleux (No. 19)
Imagerie Pellerin First edition Hardcover Very Good
N.d, circa 1910. (No. 19 of series.) 25 elephantine leaves or plates (15.5 by 12.5 inches, 43 by 33 cm), including title page. Plates 451 to 475 in the series. All with cartoon stories and verses accompanied by color illustrated panels in all kinds of configurations on the page. Sometimes just two different illustrations, sometimes as many as, or even more than, a dozen. Highlights from a purely visual gag, as well as perhaps historical point-of-view, is the plate entitled "De Utilite des Aeroplanes", which pokes fun at the perils of early plane aviation, and another plate that features a flying machine that resembles a grasshopper, but the satire, parody and humor is far-ranging and boundless. Plates are all clean and binding is tight. Boards, with illustrated paper pasted onto board, has considerable wear, soiling and foxing, with some chipping and minor edge loss of the paper. However, the illustration of a bow in a clown outfit is still attractive and indeed, a component in making for a handsome package overall.

Narran le Maschere, Adami, Giuseppe
20 Adami, Giuseppe Narran le Maschere
Bergamo Insituto Italiano D'Arti Grafiche 1st Edition Hardcover Fine Montedoro, Marco
Book. 4to - over 9 - 12" tall. N.d. Circa 1920s. 148, [1] pp. With 9 tipped-in color plates featuring Arlecchino, Brighella, etc. Interconnected tales inspired by and relating to the Commedia dell'Arte. The plates are of vivid color and full of panache. Nominally juvenalia, these illustrations and accompanying text are even more likely to ingratiate themselves to adults, especially those intrigued by masques and the Venetian Carnavale. Interspersed with the Italian is Venetian and Bergamasco dialect. Montedoro, the illustrator, is an unjustly forgotten or neglected artist (to our knowledge). Other than light soilage on the white cloth, this is a fine copy.
