Framed Photograph of Connecticut Exhibit at the Centennial Exposition of 1876 in Philadelphia
2 Framed Photograph of Connecticut Exhibit at the Centennial Exposition of 1876 in Philadelphia

14 x 13 inches. This is an original photograph from the 1876 Philadelphia Exposition showing the Connecticut display, which mixed American country furniture, Colonial effects and various hunt paraphernalia, together with Yankee patriotic gewgaws and iconology. The photo looks somewhat overexposed, as was the inevitable consequence of photo techniques then. At base of photo are names of Connecticut officials and legend of the fair. The frame is plain and is itself quite old. More photos available upon request.

3 New York World's Fair 1939
New York Lord and Thomas 1936 Cloth Very Good
Large elephantine folio sized book (24 by 19 inches) on plans for the upcoming New York World's Fair, which dazzled crowds with its many futuristic designs and conceptions, introduced to the public television and other then stupendous new inventions, and came as the interwar peace was drawing to a close. The prospectus, for that is what it is, is full of bold Art Deco illustrations, some brightly colored. Perhaps most exciting is the double paged overhead panoramic shot of the entire city and beyond. Unpaginated, 34 pp. The boards are dusty, with edge and corner wear. Otherwise, clean and crisp.

8 Clara E. Laughlin. Photography by Gordon Coster The Black Forest Village The Land of "Once Upon a Time"
Chicago Runkle Thompson Kovats Inc. 1934 First Edition Wraps Near Fine
4to, 10.5 by 8 inches, 27 by 20 cm. 24 pp., plus wraps. Issued as a souvenir at the Chicago 1934 World's Fair in conjunction with the German pavilion where a quintessential idealized Black Forest or Schwarzwald Village was created. Small folio sized, 12.5 inches tall. 374 pp. The best survey of the arts, fine and decorative, at the 1900 Paris Exhibition, which was a real high water mark for world exhibitions in terms of design, influence, the zeitgeist. Leipzig E. A. Seemann 1875 1st Edition Hardcover Good
Book. 4to - over 9 - 12" tall. xii, 524 pp. With 388 woodcut illustrations in text and five copper engravings (all present, although the latter are clustered in back and not by pages as indicated in index). Similar to the English language "Art Journals", this is the best source for a contemporaneous review and critique of the decorative arts on display at the Vienna Exposition of 1873. This was the zenith of the ornate eclecticism and turgid revivals that characterized the mid-Victorian era, associated with Louis Napoleon in France, yet also just at the point there was going to be a reaction to all this. Striking also was the seriousness devoted to the decorative arts. In this volume, perhaps in contrast to the Art Journals, some influential tastemakers such as von Falke weighed in with their thoughts. For anyone interested in the sophisticated elaborate antiques of the period, this book is a trove of information, even if the German can not be read. Binding has considerable rubbing and/or wear, including red morocco spine. Gilt lettering and decoration thereon still reasonably bright. Green marbled endpapers. Binding is tight. Pages are clean if age toned. Good plus.

14 Thompson, Zadock Journal of a Trip to London, Paris and the Great Exhibition of 1851
Burlington, VT Nichols & Warren 1852 1st Edition Hardcover Good
Book. 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall. 144 pp. With frontis illustration of Crystal Palace. Presentation copy with "Token of Gratitude" written in gilt on front cover, is inscribed on second fly leaf, "Eli Chittenden Esq. with respects of Z. Thompson." Chittenden was prominent Vermonter, bearing one of the best known names in the state. In addition to a Yankee's impressions of the first true world exposition, this is a travelogue of England and France by well-known Vermont writer. Heavy toning of pages -- not exactly foxing, but soilage resulting mostly from the particular paper stock. Wear to spine extremities and elsewhere, albeit less so, to cloth binding. Tight binding. A good copy.
