1 "Santiago de Cuba"
Box Very Good
Extraordinary group of ten original "postcards" with mixed media artwork depicting the sights of Santiago de Cuba. N.d., 1950s. With each folk art-y depiction of a monument, building or the like there is a combination of wafer thin pieces of wood pasted down and watercolors and pen and ink applied directly to the card. On to the wood is applied inkwork as well. The sights include the Jose Marti monument, the Abel Santa Maria monument, the cathedral, the Moncada, the Pdre Pico stairs, the Castello del Morro, the Diego Velazquez balcony, the Plaza de la Revolucion Antoni Maceo, the Granjita Siboney, and the City Hall. Homemade box, with faux wood panels -- the faux finish is carried over to the interior of the box as well -- alligator trim and card label made to look like sign nailed down. We would guess that the cards and box were made by a local artist for sale to a visitor, but we can't say for sure that they were not made by an enthusiastic, talented tourist. Either way, does it really matter? Somehow, to the whole production, something of the improvisational, original and quirky spirit of Cuba itself is captured! The box measures 14 by 12 by 2 cm. The cards are 13.5 by 10 cm.

2 "The Vanderbilt System" for Shippers and Travellers between the Atlantic Seaboard and the West, Northwest and Southwest. 1887
New York F. B. Miller 1887 First Edition Thus Decorated Cloth Very Good
Oblong, 22 by 30 cm. [3], 112, [2], 21 pp. Eight photographic plates, including two of the original Grand Central Station, completed in 1871, and the remainder of Niagara Falls, which the New York Central promoted successfully as a tourist destination to augment ticket sales. Many other illustrations of tourist points of interest along the various railroad routes, plus ads with illustrations of hotel accommodations and the like. One folding map of New York State and its railroad lines. The emphasis of the book is on the New York Central, its trunk line and subsidiary lines between New York and Chicago, but the last section of the book is devoted to the Boston & Albany Railroad Department, which was a major route then. The contents, besides the extensive tourist information, includes information about the businesses themselves, their history, their leadership and corporate organization, and many advertisements for hotels, financial services, railroad cars, miscellaneous furnishings and dry goods. One ad features a touch of color printing. This publication is something of a hybrid, intended to function as both a promotion and a reference. Given its ephemeral nature, it is an uncommon title. Hinges repaired. Soiling and wear to the green cloth binding.

N.d., late 19th century. Oblong, 16 by 24 cm. A leporello with 30 panels, full of views of the sights, urban and natural scenery, with a variety of lay-outs per page, with sometimes a single image, other times, several, arranged horizontally and vertically, etc. The printing of the illustrations used a photo lithographic process, and the leaves have a glossiness to them, with here and there arts and crafts period floral decoration in the margins. Album of 37 Oil Paintings and Watercolors of Primarily England [D.L. & A.C. Miller. June-July 1920]
5 Album of 37 Oil Paintings and Watercolors of Primarily England [D.L. & A.C. Miller. June-July 1920]
1920 Full Leather Very Good
By various hands. The album bears the date of 1920 but the artwork presumably would probably have been collected over time, either before or after that date, or a bit of both. The name of Miller is on the front cover, but that is probably the name of the owner and compiler of the album and does not explain much beyond that. The quality is various, as is the style, with the unifying element that they are all relating to lovely scenery of the countryside, the small town, the seaside in the South of England, Yorkshire, perhaps elsewhere in England, and at least one or two from the Continent (France, Holland). Shipwrecks, an aqueduct, craggy coastline are among the more interesting subjects. The album is 19 by 26, oblong, with the postcard-sized watercolors mounted onto heavy card stock leaves. Generally the places depicted are not in and of themselves famous, but almost all are the quintessence of the English landscape. Some scattered light foxing in the margins

Album of Sixteen Hand-Colored Aquatint Swiss Views
7 Album of Sixteen Hand-Colored Aquatint Swiss Views
Zurich H. F. Leuthold; Dikenman. Cloth Very Good
N.d., circa 1840. Oblong 4to. 25.5 by 33.5 cm. Views of Rigi, Zurich, Luzerne, the Rhine Falls, Hof Ragaz, Giessbach, Brienz, Interlaken, the Wetterhorn, the Staubach, Thun, and Vevey. The coloring is lush, the detailing, precise, and these plates are very much in the tradition of Lory, in their style and their quality. We believe this was an album that was assembled by a tourist, who would have chosen from a selection at a print shop and arranged, probably there, to have the prints then handsomely bound. Most of the prints were published by Dikenman, with a few by Leuthold. A few abrasions on the red pebbled cloth, which bears an owner's initials and has blindstamped and gilt ruled decoration. Tissue guards within with creases. Some marginal soiling. Pictures themselves are clean and stunning.

8 Album of Taste and Fashion and Book of Commercial & General Information Golden Guide to London
London George Hennelle 1877 Decorated Blindstamped Cloth Very Good
Folio-sized, 40 by 31 cm. 73 leaves are numbered (not pages), followed by an almost equal number not accordingly numbered. This is the antithesis of a pocket tourist guide, and not just in size. While the part that is not overtly paid-for advertisements is full of useful information, the size and heft of the book meant that it was more likely to be a courtesy reference one might have found at hotels or on ships, or perhaps as a souvenir for the visitor. The reference part has all the expected useful information -- hotels, restaurants, transportation info, sights, museums, neighborhood descriptions, and many text illustrations -- but it is the often splashy ads that probably stood out then, and stand out now. These form the greater part of devoted to "Fine Arts", "Shipping Intelligence", "Champagne and Cognac", and "Plans of London Theatres". In the first of these, there are numerous full page ads for photography studios, often with a specimen of their work. The champagne section is full of mounted color printed labels. The last section has pictorial diagrams of many theatres still standing today. There are plenty of other flamboyant ads in the first part of the book for almost anything conceivable, from clothes to pool tables to lawn mowers, sometimes with mounted chromolithographic illustrations. Wear to the red decorative cloth. Repair to the front joint. Clean within.

Biedermeier Period Game Board of 84 European City Views
9 Biedermeier Period Game Board of 84 European City Views
Germany Very Good
Lovely vignette views from the Biedermeier era. N.d., circa 1830. All the cities are in Europe, with Constantinople being the partial exception, as it has an Asian side. The backgrounds of the vignettes are alternately blue, orange, pink and white, and each of the cities are numbered, 1 being Contantinople, and 84, in the dead center, being Dresden. We do not have instructions for the game nor a box or sleeve, but one can surmise that players moved pieces along in a race to the center, and one can further surmise that the game is of Saxon origin and probably from Dresden. For many of the cities, the representative view is the same today, while for just as many, it is something no longer possible to experience, whether because of war or growth. Many of the views have tiny human figures in the foreground, just like typical larger print panoramas. The game board is a square, each side being 39.5 cm, and folds twice for compact storage. The city square vignettes face in all four directions, but nonetheless, the open board would make for an appealing framed wall hanging. The light soiling does not undermine the visual charm of the board.

10 Dem Andenken der Freundschaft
1838-1842 Slipcase. Chemise. Good
Oblong, 11 by 17 cm. 78 plates, all but one of which is hand-colored, and overwhelmingly city views and panoramas of cities in the German-speaking world, with a smattering of other genres of illustrations. The title plate is of a funereal plinthe surrounded by trees and shrubbery. The Biedermeier period aesthetic predominates, even with the views, which also feature people, horses, carriages, etc., both to enliven the scene and to provide scale. Also several leaves with just manuscript contributions -- no illustrations. The back of the plates are given to hand-written friendship sentiments typical of such albums, written generally in a neat yet today inscrutable cursive, with much of these contributions in verse. Of interest is one page which has a hair lock sample sewn in. While printed plates are a commonplace in such Biedermeier era amicorum albums, we have never seen an album comparable in terms of the sheer number of such printed views, not to mention so many of which are hand-colored. The majority of leaves don't have writing behind their plates, however. Dating based on manuscript friendship entries' dates. Gilt edging, all edges. The outer box has considerable wear, with some cracks and surface loss of the textured blue paper. The inner chemise is lacking its spine. Both of its boards survive, and notwithstanding a moderate amount of soiling and wear, still have bright paper pastedowns on their outer sides. The leaves within have some tears, all minor, some small chips, also generallly not substantial, but also an age toning combined with a fading of the hand-coloring that can come off as dulling, and at times, when there is soiling, as gritty.

Fan with College and Preparatory School Names along with Place Names, Restaurant Names, Hotel Names, Monograms, Crests, Emblems, etc. Labels Pasted On
13 Fan with College and Preparatory School Names along with Place Names, Restaurant Names, Hotel Names, Monograms, Crests, Emblems, etc. Labels Pasted On
1900 N.A. Very Good
Quirky homemade souvenir fan with many stickers pasted on from New England and New York State towns, colleges (Yale, Harvard, Boston University, Amherst), fraternities, Prep Schools (Andover, Exeter), restaurants, hotels, clubs and other points of interest and monograms. While there is no definitive dating, this kind of fan was a popular hobby at the turn of the twentieth century. The stickers are on both sides of the fan, and the effect is same as on luggage with stickers from all the places the owner has traveled, except on the fan the stickers are much smaller. Given the preponderance of schools, we would conjecture that this particular fan was created by a young person, perhaps for his/her own enjoyment or conceived as a gift for a friend. Surely it was done as an act of love, and its very oddity must have been a source of fun for its creator. The fan has nine wooden spokes that fan out to 49 cm, and closed the fan is 26 cm tall. The labels and tags are pasted onto a black mackintosh fabric which has a luster. There is virtually no space available for additional tags, and so the project was fully realized by its creator. Solid and well-preserved.
