[Manuscript] Fer Ter Dom Ter
5 [Manuscript] Fer Ter Dom Ter
NA Very Good
Unusual manuscript with exquisite miniature writing and decoration. N.p., but surely Italian. N.d., 18th century probably. 12mo (in size). 12.5 by 8 cm. Unpaginated, 20 pp. Written in red, green and black inks. Three decorative letter devices, ornamental ribboning of the title on every page, a few other decorative touches (feathering framing sections, etc.) and written in a calligraphic, or neat calligraphic, cursive script of truly diminutive proportions. Most letters are 1 mm in height, with taller letters (f, l, etc.) spanning 3 mm at most. Predominantly written in Italian, with a smattering of Latin interspersed. The manuscript recounts and discusses the wicked Hebrew king Abimelech, a character in the Book of Judges, chapters 8 and 9. (There are other Abimelechs in the Bible, and the name itself means "King".) This Abimelech, a son of Gideon and his concubine, murdered 70 of his half-brothers to inherit the throne of the City of Shechem. One one surviving brother flees for his safety. Abimelech dies in battle at the point that he was close to prevailing completely, when a townswoman drops a millstone on him from a tower. Realizing his wound was mortal, he asks one of his soldiers to run a sword through him so it can not be said that he was killed by a woman. In the manuscript's short preface, an extended, convoluted metaphor about elephants and dogs leads into the tale of Abimelech. The latter part of the manuscript is a sort of spiritual guide based on the Third Order of Saint Dominic. Condition: closed tear along page folds (spine). Small hole in one front letter device (minor text loss in page behind) caused by iron-based black ink. Some light soiling. Overall fragility.

Narran le Maschere, Adami, Giuseppe
8 Adami, Giuseppe Narran le Maschere
Bergamo Insituto Italiano D'Arti Grafiche 1st Edition Hardcover Fine Montedoro, Marco
Book. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. N.d. Circa 1920s. 148, [1] pp. With 9 tipped-in color plates featuring Arlecchino, Brighella, etc. Interconnected tales inspired by and relating to the Commedia dell'Arte. The plates are of vivid color and full of panache. Nominally juvenalia, these illustrations and accompanying text are even more likely to ingratiate themselves to adults, especially those intrigued by masques and the Venetian Carnavale. Interspersed with the Italian is Venetian and Bergamasco dialect. Montedoro, the illustrator, is an unjustly forgotten or neglected artist (to our knowledge). Other than light soilage on the white cloth, this is a fine copy.

Firenze Il Moücke, Stampatore dell'Institute de' Nobili 1765 First Edition Wraps Very Good
Extremely scarce, with only copy found on OCLC First Search at the Library of Congress. 4to. 26.5 by 20.5 cm. LIX, [2] pp. The art exhibit and the one act drama were arranged by, and meant to celebrate, the Instutito de' Nobili, created in 1761, according to introductory remarks in the book. Listed are its members, a few of the surnames remain well-known for one reason or another (Salviati, Guicciardini, Strozzi). The play expands upon, or adapts, a few scenes from the Aeniad of Virgil, and it would seem to us that the Instituto was intent on supporting and perpetuating a traditional elevated form of drama based on the "classics." Wraps a later gilt and rust red damask paper. Edge of wraps soiled.

10 Alighieri, Dante. La Divina Commedia
Milano G. Gnocchi. Printed by Fratelli Salmin of Padova 1878 Full Decorated Morocco Fine
A gorgeous decorative brown morocco binding of one the highpoints in the history of miniature book production! 55 by 40 mm. 500 pp. The two-point "flies' eyes" type used in the book was singled out by Spielman as "the smallest ever employed." Another piece of trivia relating to this book's production is that 30 pages took about a month to produce, and dealing with the miniscule type ened up hurting the eyesight of both the compositor and corrector, according to "Miniature Books: 4,000 Years of Tiny Treasures", issued by the Grolier Club. Spielmann 114. Bondy p. 95.

Galleria Storica dell'Italia Contenente in Cento Intagli Miniati i Fatti Piu Notabili Avvenuti nel Corso di X Secoli Illustrati di Descrizioni e Notizie (Two Volumes), C. Sabattini, C. Rusconi, etc.
19 C. Sabattini, C. Rusconi, etc. Galleria Storica dell'Italia Contenente in Cento Intagli Miniati i Fatti Piu Notabili Avvenuti nel Corso di X Secoli Illustrati di Descrizioni e Notizie (Two Volumes)
Firenze David Passigli 1845-6 First Edition Full Morocco Near Fine
Uncommon title with 100 bright and hand-colored plates depicting major figures and events of Italian history. Each plate accompanies generally eight to twelve text pages relating a tale or biography of the figure(s) depicted. The articles are ornamented with lovely ornate borders which vary in color and design from one piece to the next. The work itself was issued at a time when Italian consciousness was finally being roused with the first rumblings for unification, which would finally come to fruition two decades later, but it is significant that in this work the heros and heroines highlighted come from all over the Italian peninsula, including Naples, Venice, etc. then separate kingdoms, principalities, or under Austrian or Church control. The beauty and scale of this two volume set ensured that it would be treasured and also that it would be lovingly consulted repeatedly to learn about or re-acquiant oneself with the rich heritage of Italian legends. The plates themselves are colored in an interesting manner, with the background and secondary characters and scenery colored lightly, with a thin layer, and the focal point featuring deeper colors, enriched with gum arabic, and the effect of this two-fold approach is to render almost a depth of field. This copy of the set is clean throughout, with both the plates and text leaves nearly spotless. The red morocco was bound by Stikeman & Co. of New York. It has some rubbing along the joints and edges, with heavier wear in the corners. Nonetheless the binding remains handsome and complements well the luxuriance of the content.
