2 A Los Toros! Viva Espana!
Valencia Lit. S. Dura Leporellos Very Good
N.d., circa 1890. Oblong, 10.5 by 15 cm. 12 color plates depicting crowd heading to arena on the front cover, then within the leporello all the pageantry and ritual of the bull fight, with an illustration of the bulls reposing in a pasture on the back cover. The panorama was almost certainly produced as a souvenir -- a keepsake for someone attending the bullfight and hawked by peddlers calling out to passerbys on the periphery of the arena. The quality of the printing is not necessarily of the highest level, but the arrangement of the images in a leporello has a compact charm all its own. Light age toning, and trivial signs of wear.

3 Catalogo de propagana taurina 1961. Imprenta-Litografia Ortega Valencia-Espana. Catalogo Muestrario. Carteles, Cartelitos, Cabeceras, Prospectos, Billetes.
Valencia 1960 Wraps Near Fine
4to. 29.5 by 23 cm. Unpaginated, 48 leaves in colorful wrappers. Setting this catalogue apart from earlier Ortega catalogues, all of which are scarce, is besides the shape, the facing pages from the specimen samples feature action line illustrations of various facets of the bullfight. Splashily colorful trade catalogue from lithographic printer specializing in cards, tickets, programs and posters dedicated to bullfights and local fairs and fiestas. Much of the content is brilliantly illustrated promotions of bullfights, with flyers, posters and the like tipped in, generally two or three pasted onto the same base leaf. Samples which in practice might have been printed in varying sizes, often much larger than in the catalogue, they capture the thrill, ritual and spirit of the sport. The pages with tickets and some other items are less eye candy but no less useful documents of the material paraphernalia of the sport, and reminders too of the manifold commercial aspects of an entertainment business. Quite scarce, with the only several copies surfacing on OCLC from other years. Light wear.

4 Collection of Five Trade Cards Featuring Baseball Caricatures

Circa 1880s, these five cards were all promotions, or ads, for The New Carlton Dining Room in Boston. The cards depict a fat klutz contending with various elements of the National Pastime. We see this man knocked off his feet by catching a ball, stiffly awaiting a pitch while at bat, as a catcher, striking out and lolling after apparently hitting a home run. The captions are"Bravo! The Pet of the Nine", "Something must be done! Put it there!", "A close affair. Hugging the bat.", "Struck out.", and "Hero of a Home Run. The Ladies Favorite". These cards were not designed specifically for the named Boston restaurant, but rather, they were produced by a printer to be sold to businesses which would then have their own business name and information printed onto the card. The pictures on the cards often bore no relation to the enterprise issuing them. But the cards were intended as collectables, and often they would find their way into albums and scrapbooks compiled as a hobby. The cards measure 5.25 by 3.25 inches. They are pristine, other than the backs of a few of them show a faint sign of the paste that must have been used to append them to albums.

5 Croquêt
England Hardcover Very Good
N.d. Circa 1870s. Small 4to. 24 by 18 cm. Eight pages of manuscript, with eight delightful pen and ink illustrations, including cover decoration, plus six ornamental letter vignettes ("historiated", "floriated" and "rusticated"). The illustrations include ones of a manor house, with three croquet players in the foreground, a grouping of players with one about to do an agressive swing resembling a golf drive, a group of young adults listiening to a serenader, and wooing couple and a seraph steering a tiny sailboat. The verse is pleasant and rich in charm: "Instead of wars of words and wit,/ This is a conflict far more fit./ The lady's ready grace and skill/ Matched against manyly strength and will./ All martyr-like, consent to bear/ Reverses with a cheerful air,/ And learn to hurl the well-aimed blow/ Of retribution on the foe . . . " Perhaps not Gerald Manley Hopkins, but the competent verse does capture the rhythm, the spirit and appeal of the game remarkably well, and together with the illustrations evoke a lazy afternoon in a bucolic setting of the 1800s that is bound to spark wistful daydreams in our hardened, frenetic times. Bound with a red buckram dust jacket, the title "Croquêt" embossed in gilt on the front. The paper is of a stiff card stock.

10 E. I. Horsman Wholesale Catalogue Spring Goods. 1898 Manufacturer, Importer, Exporter and Jobber of Indoor & Outdoor Games, Novelties, Sports, and Toys. Sole Manufacturer of the Famous Trade "Blue Hill Box Kite" Mark. Headquarters for Croquet, Golf, Tennis, Hammocks, &c.
New York 1898 Wraps Very Good
Scarce, with no copies found on OCLC, nor anything else produced by this company. A diverse sporting goods catalog that includes a number of items of individual interest. First there is the kite alluded to on the front cover. Within the catalog maintains that this kite, "now Famous throughout the Country", and "KITE FLYING LAWN PARTIES", will be "THE SOCIETY FAD for the Coming Season". In the heyday of kite-flying, coinciding with the dawn of modern-day aviation, the rage, it seems, was for "scientific kite flying". Some of the games advertised in the pages are now obscure, such as "Crokinole", "Pango" and "Carroms", although the last two have more modern versions, perhaps. Tennis rackets bear names such as the "Tuxedo" Expert. Croquet and archery, while still around, were far more prevalent, and the equipment options reflect this. In any case, it is impossible to tersely describe everything presented in the 32 pages, including the covers (but not including a few insert items), of this catalog. The line illustrations are all quite appealing and help transport us back to the late Victorian era. Some light soling, with a narrow dampstain on the upper front cover and a small chip on the rear. Generally clean within.

12 Manufacture Francaise d'Armes & Cycles de Saint-Etienne. Societe Anonyme au Capital de 10,000,000 de Francs
St. Etienne, Loire Wraps Good
N.d., circa 1919, based on one plate with women's fashion from that year. 4to. 25 by 18.5 cm. 660 pp. plus wraps. Catalogue of the French answer to Sears Roebuck -- a more specialized version -- with great variety of goods, including furniture, clocks, silverware, cameras, etc.; but the greatest emphasis is on sporting equipment, and particularly firearms and other paraphernalia for shooting and hunting, cycling, as clear from the title, and then followed by other sports, and the outdoor life more generally. This is expressed particularly in the color plates, which depict fox-hunting, shooting, cycling, etc. Many other curious goods are for sale, including cannons for public ceremonies. A whole section is devoted to typewriters, which includes short pieces speaking the virtues of the relatively new technology and offering advise on its use. For antique collectors, there are a rich array of now antique objets d'art such as inkwells, vases, or bronzes. For bibliophiles, there are many albums (for photos and scrap) that one now encounters at book fairs -- here these vintage bindings are being offered as brand new. And on and on -- it is impossible to concisely describe all the variety of goods that were on offer here. This is a catalogue that is both enjoyable to leaf through if one is at all casually interested in the material culture of the past and useful as a reference on this material culture, or any of the many kinds of goods covered by the catalogue. The pages are heavily age toned, as per the type of paper used. The wraps have flattened creases and considerable wear from use but are essentially intact.

Smoking and Smokers; Also, Snuff and Snuff-Takers. With Numerous Wood Cuts
14 Smoking and Smokers; Also, Snuff and Snuff-Takers. With Numerous Wood Cuts
London Joseph Baker 1851 First Edition Blindstamped decorated cloth Very Good
Essentially two books, closely related in topic and tone, in one. 90 and 90 pp. 8to, 8 by 4.5 inches, 20 by 12 cm. With numerous often droll woodcut illustrations of smokers in their various attitudes and conceits. The work(s) treat seemingly all aspects of their subject, including history, statistical data regarding, and then countless other looser associative matters of which the very act of smoking invites, for smoking, and now the mostly bygone practice of taking snuff, so much more to their acolytes than the simple consumption of the stuff. Thus there are chapters on reveries concerning tobacco, of the pipe as a means of public instruction, on maxims regarding, on tobacco and the classics, and on and on. Without question these droll studies were written largely for the delectation of smokers and snuff-takers! The ranginess and sly wit of the author, together with his sometimes ardent arguments in favor of the products, make this one of those rare cultural and literary artefacts that can entertain the modern reader as the author intended yet also with the ironic detachment of our hindsight. Green blindstamped boards decorated with gilt. Rubbing along gutters. A light dampstain affects the margins of many pages yet more or less blends in with the moderate age toning of the leaves. Some starting of the rear hinge.

15 Swaine Adeney Briggs & Sons Limited Catalogue "Briggs" Umbrella
London Wraps Near Fine
N.d., circa 1950s. While the undated catalog is surely from the 1950s, with its mention of Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, it evokes an earlier era with its mix of classic products for gentlemen, ladies, and their servants, including hunting and beagling whips, polo and dressage whips, riding crops, umbrellas, walking sticks, seat sticks, gloves, picnic baskets and race hampers, clocks and compacts, trophies and car mascots, document cases, traveling and writing cases, leather goods, etc. The 72 page catalog is a treat for enthusiasts of things English, sporting paraphernalia, etc. The company of Swaine Adeney Briggs was formed by merger in 1943 with the oldest antecedent component dating back to 1750 when James Ross founded a whip making business. The Briggs part of the company enjoyed the Royal Warrant of Queen Victoria and at the time of the catalogue. The company remains based on Piccadilly, and now has several branches elsewhere in London. 8vo. Minor wear. Generally clean.
