1 "Littera Scripta Manet" Folio
Wood Fine
N.d., circa 1900. A woodcarved oak folio, or letter or writing portfolio. The woodcarving work and floral motives are folk art-ish. The relief work has a depth to it, and the front panel has a solidity to it, as befits an oak piece. The interior has a brownish-orange felt pad. Two ribbon ties on the side seal the folio shut. The folio measures 11.75 by 8.5 inches, or 30 by 22 cm.

"Presentation Notebook" or "Folio" Bearing the Coat-of-Arms of the United Kingdom
2 "Presentation Notebook" or "Folio" Bearing the Coat-of-Arms of the United Kingdom
Paris 1855 First Edition Vellum Fine
This "Presentation Notebook" or "Folio", for want of a more specific name for it, is an exquisite example of French decorative binding, bearing on the front board the coat-of-arms of the United Kingdom, with its two mottos, "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense" (or "Shame to whoever thinks ill" or "Evil to he who thinks evil", etc.) and "Dieu et Mon Droit" (or "God and my right", and more loosely, "God is behind me"). The emblem is blindstamped and richly hand-colored, and further spectacular ornamental work frames it as well as the golden crown on the rear board. This unique folder was allegedly a gift by Louis Napoleon to a member of the Royal party during the state visit of the Queen in 1855 in conjunction with the Exposition Universelle, or the first major world's fair, held in Paris, after the Crystal Palace exhibition of 1851. Inside the endpapers are a silk moire and then the leaves are held in place by a silk ribbon. There are four sheets of fine paper, making 16 pages or sides, and a pink outer sheet. On four of the pages in the top corner are tinted images of four Paris monuments: Palais des Tuileries (the Louvre), Notre Dame, the Arc de Triomphe and the Madeleine. The Notebook measures 8.5 by 5.5 inches, or 21 by 13 cm. Fine

Near miniature, 9 by 5.5 cm. 58 pp. Other than a tiny piece of gilt border missing on rear board, pristine. Silk moire endpapers. Album for Photographs with Three Fore-Edge Paintings
4 Album for Photographs with Three Fore-Edge Paintings
Full Morocco Very Good
A highly unusual set of fore-edges. N.d., late nineteenth century. The fore-edge paintings are views of a Swiss chalet, a lakeside scene with two sailboat at rest and rendered loosely in the style of Claude Lorrain, and a view of a lake shore. Each of the paintings is in an oval cameo that is surrounded by bright guaffered edges that contain an elaborate floral design. Since the album leaves are made of thick card, these fore-edges are fully visible when the book is closed tight -- it would be impossible to fan the leaves, and thus impossible to do fore-edge paintings that disappear when a book is shut. Yet the execution of fore-edge paintings on an album of this type had to have been uncommon and thus more than compensates for their mechanical limitations. The binding itself is in the Gothic style, with raised leather banding on the front and back together with a raised center lozenge medaillion. The spine has five raised bands and typical gilt decoration in the compartments. The album is shut firmly with two decorative brass clasps. After a chromolithographic title page with "Album for Photographs" written, the album has 24 leaves, with four slots each on the front and back of each leaf. A little over half of the slots are filled with religious imagery, photos of artwork, much of a religious nature but also including classical statuary, busts of more contemporary subjects, animal portraits, with some concentration on feline images, portraits of a few well-known personages. To most these images lend some period authenticity and charm, but they will be secondary to the fore-edges and the binding. The leather is heavily rubbed along the edges and has scuffs elsewhere. The joints are rubbed. The spine has a crack line down its vertical center. The album is supposed to have four pearl studs on the front and rear boards respectively to balance it and protect the leather below; the front is missing two of these studs and the back, one.

5 Almanach de la Cour, de la Ville et des Departments Pour l'Annee 1812
Paris Chez Janet. Printer: L'Imprimerie de J. M. Eberhart 1811 First Edition Full Straight-Grained Red Morocco Very Good
12mo. 124 by 70 mm. [42], 232 pp. With four copper engravings. Detailed listings of all the officialdom and titled officeholders of the House of Napoleon, and these include those serving under the Empress. The almanac is a perfect reflection of Napoleon at the height of his imperial pretensions. With the restoration of the Church there is also listings of cardinals. The monthly calendars with saint days and the like appears in the front. Each of the plates has a comparatively elaborate explanation of what is depicted also in the preliminaries. Perhaps as important as the content is the beauty of the binding, with its gilt borders and ornamentation, including the crown and imperial cross devices on the spine. Also with pretty silk moire endpapers. Modest edgewear. Light scattered foxing, more abundant on the tissue guards.

N.d., circa 1900. 31 by 22 cm. The color palette is gilt on black and somber green/gray. The binding is flawlessly preserved. Date Book 1932
7 Date Book 1932
Germany 1931 Near Fine
Wonderful sharp and colorful Art Deco design on thin leatherette cover! 64mo. 6 by 4 cm. Unpaginated, 22 leaves (44 pp). Unused, for blank lines for each day of the year, along with info on birthstones and flowers, wedding anniversaries (what each is symbolized by), and on phases of the moon and holidays. But obviously, this is very much about the loveliness of the binding. This particular copy is stamped with the business name, "Perin Drug Store, Monument Square, Dover-Foxcroft, ME", but this was surely sold to businesses to be distributed as a freebie or favor.

10 Farmholme Guest Book
Binding: London Doves Bindery 1906 Full Decorated Morocco Fine
Farmholme Guest Book. Binding: London: Doves Bindery, 1906. With original caricature and artwork by famous architect and eccentric Addison Mizner. Entries dated between 1906 and 1929, with binding bearing the date of 1906. 4to. 28 by 20 cm. 92 pp. with entries, and about two-thirds of the leaves remaining blank. Mizner's contributions include three self-caricature sketches and also a watercolor, all signed with his distinctive insignia. Besides Mizner's contributions, there are two other watercolors, one a cameo of a bucolic classical ruin, another, a dog looking out onto a panoramic view of pines and the coast, undoubtedly a view from a Farmholme prospect, or nearby, before it was overrun with suburban development. And there are several other fun drawings, including ones of a race car and of a plane. Mizner (1872-1933) is credited with pioneering the Mediterranean and Spanish Colonial stucco architectural style in Southern Florida, and also Southern California and Beverly Hills. As virtually integral as this style has become to these places and elsewhere, before Mizner designed the Everglades Country Club's clubhouse in Palm Beach in 1918, the prevailing style there was Victorian Queen Anne and Colonial Revival shingle homes such as one would have found in Northeastern resorts. Admiration for the Everglades clubhouse made Mizner the go-to architect for millionaires (Stotesburys, Vanderbilt, etc.) who competed against one another through the 1920s for the most impressive mansion in Palm Beach, formerly primarily a hotel resort, and his style was emulated by other architects hired to build less august developments. Among Mizner's legacy is the Boca Raton Resort & Club. Mizner, though, was not your typical nose-to-the-grindstone architect but also a highly colorful figure, famed as a raconteur, a co-author of the satiric "The Cynic's Calendar of Revised Wisdom for 1903" and many sequels, and a bit of a scoundrel, who with his brother was implicated in some shady transactions relating to the Florida land boom of the 1920s, and this served as the basis for the Stephen Sondheim 2008 musical, "Road Show". It is the social animal that Mizner was, someone who was able to exploit social connections, that should give this guest book a certain resonance to those fascinated by him and his career. Also, Mizner was a somewhat unconventionally trained architect. He didn't go to a modern sort of architecture school, but apprenticed in an architectural office, and perhaps it was unorthodox training that later made him so much an original, and eccentric, architect, famous for glitches in his designs such as stairways that went nowhere. But he was regarded as a highly proficient draftsman and talented artist, abilities perhaps all too in short supply in the architectural profession, and here are examples of his quick dash art that provide some delightful corroboration of this reputation. Another guest at Farmholme was Ethel Watts Mumford (Grant), his co-author, who in one place contributed four lines of comic verse and a drawing of two monkeys. Other guests included Elisabeth Marbury, the prominent theatrical agent and lesbian lover of Elsie de Wolfe; Mary Livingston Hunt, of the Old Knickerbocker Livingstons; and many others who were undoubtedly secure in their Social Register bona fides -- people with names such as de Forest, Alsop, Callander, Ogden, Hotchkiss. Whoever many of these people were, the same people came back again and again over the two decades, suggesting a close knit group of friends. While many of the entries are just autographs, sometimes accompanied by an anodyne sentiment, not a few are accompanied with a few lines of appreciative verse or snippets of musical notation. One guest, an Eduardo Bucco (?) left several entries in Italian verse. The painter of the watercolor cameo signed in reverse -- one needs a mirror to make out the name, which looks something like Raymond Tumball. As august as Farmholme must have been, based on its guests, bits and pieces hinted at in the text of entries, the painted view, the exquisiteness of the guest book itself, we were not able to discover anything definitive about the estate. In all likelihood, the estate was located in Stonington, CT where there is now a subdivision on a Farmholme Road, and this would be a coastal location consistent with the painting referred to above. Bound beautifully, in an Art Nouveau-style binding, by Dove's Bindery of London. Gilt ruling around the perimeter and gilt floral motives set off all the corners, both inside and out. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Fine. Full Decorated Morocco. (#003950) $4,500.00

Guest Book of the Princess Kotzebue for the Château de Suisnes
11 Guest Book of the Princess Kotzebue for the Château de Suisnes
1932-1973
A guest book with entries by the cream of High Society, including Doris Duke, Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII, Perle Mesta (the "Hostess with the Mostess"; the entry was made while she was the Ambassador to Luxembourg), Millicent Hearst, Hohenlohes, Armours, and on and on. 4to. 32 by 26.5 cm. Over 230 pages chock-a-block with the inscriptions, followed by about 50 blank leaves. The chateau was a setting where super-rich Americans hobnobbed with European aristocrats, not a few of whom were originally American. Some other names we recognize: Marjorie Oelrichs, who married bandleader Eddy Duchin and was the mother of Peter Duchin, actress and then ur-interior decorator Elsie de Wolfe (signing as Elsie Mendl), decorator and Edith Wharton collaborator Ogden Codman, Margaret Copley Thaw -- the Countess of Perigny, A. Hamilton Rice, an Amazon explorer and husband to a Widener widow, various Houghtons, Brokaws, Dillons (including Douglas), Lewisohns, etc. It is a safe assumption that virtually all the guests were very wealthy, or believed to be, or very socially connected, and the names that may today be obscure would have been widely known from the society pages back when. Many of the guests were repeat visitors. Occasionally a guest would not just sign his name, but would write a short appreciation, a bon mot or stab at wit, sketch something cute, or the like. Also coming with the album are several pieces that were always separate but probably always resided within its cover. The owner of the Chateau until her death was the Princess Kozebue (1872 - 1955), né Allene Tew, of Wisconsin. Her fourth husband was Prince Heinrich XXXIII Reuss of Köstritz, who for a short period, prior to the birth of Princess Juliana, was the heir to the Dutch throne. They divorced in 1935, but Allene remained close to the Dutch Royal family, becoming the godmother of the current Queen Beatrix. A year after this divorce Allene married Russian nobleman Captain Count Pavel Kotzebue (1884 - 1966). In the album, it would seem that the Prince and Princess were known to friends as Wally and Kitty. The Gruel binding is a highly decorative full brown morocco, with a wide border band of interlaced leaves, ruled lines and tiny tulip buds. In the center is a gilt crown and a ribbon flourish below bearing the name, "CHATEAU DE SUISNES", etched out of the gilt. The spine compartments, between the raised bands, have floral devices. The endpapers are a green silk moire. Thre are a few round stains on teh front board -- only one stands out -- probably from a resting cup. The hinge is cracked near the front, with an unlovely tape repair. Still, a most attractive album befitting a grand chateau.

12 Les Quatre Elémens (Four volumes, housed in a box)
Paris Imprimerie de Maulde et Renou First Edition Cartonnage, Reliure Romantique, Glazed, Gilt Embo Near Fine
Beautiful Restoration France (Biedermeier era) suite of children's books on the four elements of nature: water, fire, air and earth. N.d., circa 1830. 32mo. 83 by 54 mm each. Each volume is 24 pages and includes two wood engraved hand-colored plates, including one showing a large balloon, another of a volcanic eruption, yet another of fireworks. The white bindings are superb examples of glazed cartonnage Romantique gift book bindings, with their ornate gilt ornamentation. The outer box complements the bindings perfectly, with its gilt sides, with embossed or relief decoration, the raised framed color vignette centerpiece on the lid, the red leather base, etc. Scarce, with OCLC showing six institutional copies only (Morgan, Grolier, UCLA, Indiana, UVA, Oxford), and these copies would appear to lack the box with which they were originally issued, as we have here. (USAF Academy has a copy of the "Air" volume as well.) Gumuchian 4662. Some scattered light foxing. Soiling to the lid of the box, and minor gilt loss on the side. Overall, the box itself is very well-preserved.

Ornate Leather Folio Album with Gilt Armorial Decoration and with Blank Leaves Within
13 Ornate Leather Folio Album with Gilt Armorial Decoration and with Blank Leaves Within
Paris, London and New York Dreyfous Full Calf Very Good Plus
N.d., circa 1900. Folio, 36.5 by 27 cm. Twelve pages of blank light blue sheets of a thin card stock. The front cover has very elaborate gilt decoration around its perimeter and a centerpiece of a crown and other armorial decoration. Loosely-speaking, the decoration is in the style of the Renaissance period, with its floral and bird motives and filigrees of vines and foliage. The rear cover is far more subdued, with a simple gilt border, within which there is a squared off blindstamped rectangular band. The endpapers are an earth-toned green, gold, rust and purple damask fabric, which heightens the luxury of the folio. The blue sheets are such as one finds in nineteenth century albums and folios of this sort, and they could plausibly support an earlier dating to the album. Dreyfous was a Parisian decor concern headed by a Henri Eduard Dreyfous. We know this company was in business during the early twentieth century, as apparently Queen Mary of England was a customer. There are a few light scuffs on the leather, and one roughly one inch square area of light abrasion. Regardless, this remains a very handsome unused album.

Photo Album with Sunken Inset Silk Panels with Chromolithographic Images of a Bluebird and Wild Roses (on front), and Just Roses on Back
14 Photo Album with Sunken Inset Silk Panels with Chromolithographic Images of a Bluebird and Wild Roses (on front), and Just Roses on Back
Full Morocco (excepting silk panel) Near Fine
A gorgeous brown morocco binding with on both the front and back, large silk panel centerpieces, blindstamped gilt ruling surrounding the panels, gilt border detailing inside and raised bands. N.d., circa 1890. (There is an inscription dated 1890, Belfast, written in German, on the FEP.) Folio, 37 by 31 cm, and 8.5 cm thick. With 30 thick card leaves with photo or carte de visite slots, one to four, on the rectos and versos. Most of the slots are filled with photos from the 1870s to 1890s, some from Switzerland, others, from Ireland, and all are portraits. While we might assume all the people portrayed are related, and some of the people clearly appear multiple times, this would have been a large family, as was commonplace back then, with looks running all over the gamut. One commonality is the severity of expression, but that was also a norm for posing back then. The album is very heavy, weighing over 12 pounds. A few minor abrasions to the leather, and other light wear. Still a magnificant binding.

16 Small Baroque-style Mahogany Book Case Cabinet with a framed glass door and a collection of eight volumes of ornamental French cartonnage bindings from the 1840s
Paris Lehuby Cartonnage Near Fine
The bookcase cabinet is elegant and striking, with its ornate carved wood floral ornamented pediment and floral and foliate border framing the glass door. This small piece of furniture stands 33 cm to the top of the pediment, and if we measure to the top of the "box" or case itself, 26.5 cm, and the case is 11 cm deep. The glass door can be secured with the original metal key. The legs holding up the case about 4 cm from the ground are black metal and have typical Baroque detailing. The titles are almost beside the point, but they are all titles intended for a young adult readership. All the volumes have elaborate Renaissance Revival or Rococo frilled gilt decoration on their boards, front and back, and spines. We can not say that the case/cabinet was made for these particular volumes, but it most definitely well-suits them and the volumes fit perfectly within. All the bindings were published by Lehuby of Paris and they generally have steel engraved plates. They are 16mo and 14.5 by 9 cm each.

17 The Form and Order of the Service That Is to be Performed and the Ceremonies That are to be Observed in the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in the Abbey Church of St. Peter Westminster on Tuesday the Second Day of June 1953 [together with] two copies of the booklet issued by command of the Queen for "The Order of Divine Service" occurring the preceding Sunday; the booklet issued the previous year for the "Special Forms of Service in Commemoration of His Late Majesty King George VI", and two copies of a Silver Jubilee service booklet
Oxford and London University Press and Geoffrey Cumberlege 1953 First Edition Full Morocco, Gilt Decoration. Box. Fine
Principal item: 4to. 27.5 by 19 cm. 48 pp. Printed in black and red type on a high grade paper. With its gilt decoration on the Royal Blue leather, this was clearly a deluxe edition of the far more widely distributed cloth version. This copy is essentially pristine, with the slightest bend to the boards, as would have occurred naturally, its lovely condition a result of the protection provided by the original box. This box has a small "ER" pastedown decoration. One of its short sides is lost, and the box overall has considerable wear along its edges. The accompanying booklets are all very good or better, making for a lovely potpourri of royal momentos.

19 [Dance Card or Carnet du Bal] 1 Februar 1879 Touristen Kranzchen Blumensale. Oesterreicher Touristen-Club. Mit Herz und Hand fur's Alpenland "Post Kar'ln" von der Alm.
Vienna 1879 Full Morocco Near Fine
Extraordinary dance card for a Belle Epoque ball and possibly benefit. The card proper is held atop a staff, like a placard that might be held high in a parade. The tin and brass object is 19 cm high, and the backing at the top to which is attached the booklet proper is 6.5 by 6 cm, not counting the ornamental pediment. The booklet is 4 by 5.5 oblong, and it opens from the top. Besides the list of dances for the evening, the booklet gives credit to the music's composers, and it also contains a roster of the club's officials. The dance was in honor of Archduke Carl Ludwig. Also surviving is the original pencil, which acts as a clasp holding the booklet closed. The pencil has splintered a bit at the tip. Otherwise, the object is in wonderful shape, with even the original string and tassel none the worse for wear.

20 [Dance Card or Carnet du Bal] Alpine Themed Ball "Post Kar'ln" von der Alm.
Vienna Full Morocco Near Fine
Extraordinary dance card for a Belle Epoque ball and possibly benefit. N.d., circa 1900. Oblong, 6.5 by 10 cm. The front cover features a small painted Alpine relief vignette cameo, which is framed with ormulu brass. To its right is a mounted crest probably for the Touristen-Club, bearing the logo around its perimeter: "Mit Herz und Hand Fur's Alpenland". Suspended from this is a brass trophy. The edge of the cover has a green and gilt decorative band, with brass mounts in the corners. Most special is the writing implement, which also acts as a clasp, shaped like a belaying pick. When one opens the covers one finds a chromo color plate on the top card leaf. The other blank card leaves were intended for the young lady to write in her dancing commitments. The "dance card" is complete with the silk ribbon and hook for the lady to suspend the booklet from her gown. Light soiling on the tan boards. The pick pencil is well preserved but the pencil point is gone.
