Album of 37 Oil Paintings and Watercolors of Primarily England [D.L. & A.C. Miller. June-July 1920]
1 Album of 37 Oil Paintings and Watercolors of Primarily England [D.L. & A.C. Miller. June-July 1920]
1920 Full Leather Very Good
By various hands. The album bears the date of 1920 but the artwork presumably would probably have been collected over time, either before or after that date, or a bit of both. The name of Miller is on the front cover, but that is probably the name of the owner and compiler of the album and does not explain much beyond that. The quality is various, as is the style, with the unifying element that they are all relating to lovely scenery of the countryside, the small town, the seaside in the South of England, Yorkshire, perhaps elsewhere in England, and at least one or two from the Continent (France, Holland). Shipwrecks, an aqueduct, craggy coastline are among the more interesting subjects. The album is 19 by 26, oblong, with the postcard-sized watercolors mounted onto heavy card stock leaves. Generally the places depicted are not in and of themselves famous, but almost all are the quintessence of the English landscape. Some scattered light foxing in the margins

Companion to the Almanac, or Yearbook of General Information (16 volumes)
2 Companion to the Almanac, or Yearbook of General Information (16 volumes)
London Charles Knight 1st Edition Hardcover Near Fine
Book. 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall. Continuous run of Knight's Companion to the Almanac from 1828 to 1858, with one index volume as well covering up to 1843. Chock-a-block with interesting information on virtually all aspects of economic, business and social affairs in Britain during reign of William IV up until the mid-Victorian era. While rich in statistical and demographic information, these volumes are much, much more, with articles that describe and analyze with rigor the issues and developments of the day. Many plates and illustrations of significant architectural and engineering projects scattered throughout. Thus this can serve as both an invaluable primary source reference for the period as well as an entertaining resource for the more casual student of English history. All volumes have been professionally recased and bound with handsome light brown calf spines, preserving Victorian marbled boards and calf spine tips. All volumes are tight and clean inside. Modern marbled endpapers. Other than wear to old calf corners, this would be a fine set.

Deck of 35 hand-colored cards depicting English monarchs from William the Conqueror to William IV
3 Deck of 35 hand-colored cards depicting English monarchs from William the Conqueror to William IV
London (?) Box Very Good
N.d., circa 1830s prior to 1837 when William IV passed away. N.p. Each card is 62 by 56 mm. The cards each contain six lines of text. Above the portrait the dynasty to which the monarch belonged is given. Below the portrait is the monarch's nme, and then his birth and death years, when his/her reign began and how many years he/she reigned, except for the card pertaining to William IV, who was still alive, and his card states, "Long Life and Happiness to Him, and prosperity to his people". The cards were surely meant as an educational tool for children. The cards come in a marbled paper covered box, probably the original issued by the publisher. The box bears a date of 1834, relating to an almanac, which was probably issued by the same publisher, but regardless is general corroboration as to the dating and the origin of the deck. The box has one edge which is torn to bottom but the box is still functionable. Moderate soiling on the cards.

Fores' Correct Representation of The State Procession on the Occasion of the August Ceremony of her Majesty's Coronation, June 28th, 1838.
5 Fores' Correct Representation of The State Procession on the Occasion of the August Ceremony of her Majesty's Coronation, June 28th, 1838.
London Messrs. Fores (Fores' Sporting & Fine Print Repository and Frame Manufactory) 1838 First edition Half Calf, Marbled Boards, Cloth Insert Slipcase Good
A fabulous very long hand-colored leporello, or concertina, capturing the pomp and pageantry of the procession marking the coronation of Queen Victoria. In the age before photos, this souvenir impressively reproduced the entirety of the affair, or something very close to it, and it unquestionably served as a template for later such occasions. The leporello is 1720 by 11 cm, or over 700 inches long. It unfolds by opening from the center, with half to the left, half to the right. The leporello fits into a custom-made cloth slipcase, around which a half calf binder (with marbled boards) enfolds in a rather novel, attractive style of binding system. The outer panels on both sides are heavily soiled and foxed, as is the centerpiece, which lies on the inside of the spine. By the hinges there are abrasion losses, and the centerpiece has cracks running down vertically with trivial losses, and some minor blistering besides. Most of the panels have light soiling but are nonetheless quite bright and always attractive. The original outer casing and title is gone. Missing also is the title tab rendered in French on the left end of the leporello; the tab on the right side rendered in English is present. Happily, the entire leporello is backed with canvas to give it extra strength.

London W. Kidd Hardcover Very Good No Jacket Slader, S. and others, from the designs of Cruikshank, Seymour and Bonner
Book. 16mo - over 5 - 6" tall. Undated, circa 1830. Xrare, with only two copies turning up on OCLC Worldcat. With frontis plate and woodcut illustrations, two per section (with title and as tail piece at end). 36, 47, 36, 49, 32, 54 pp. In essence, six smaller books or pamphlets bound together, although it appears that these may have been originally issued as a single volume. Actual authorship of each installment is not given, but pseudonymous authors are One of "The Exclusives", A Member of "The Beef-Steak Club", A Lover of Nature, One of the Cognescenti, Amator, and Amicus Juventutis, respectively, with two of the sections, such as the first, Book of Fashion, supposedly "A Digest of the Axioms of the Celebrated Joseph Brummell, Esq." As the titles suggest, this is a mostly tongue-in-cheek etiquette primer as well as a wry send-up of the manners, mores and customs of fashionable society in Regency England. Tight, with some minor wear to red morocco. Interior clean. An attractive copy of a very scarce work.

R. H. Murphy Cookery Book
10 R. H. Murphy Cookery Book
Full Leather Very Good
A manuscript cookbook probably from a grand country house in Edwardian England. N.d., circa 1910. [9], 84 pp. With well over 300 recipes! Mulligtawn soup, palestine soup, becamel of chicken, Ketcherei with Finnan Haddock, lobster a la Neuberg, a breakfast cold chicken cream in aspic, Neapolitan eggs, hashed mutton, beef galantine, sardine fritters, devils on horseback, angels on horseback, Welsh rabbit, Mrs. Dunsmuir's Prize cake, Sally Lunn, Jessica's eggless cake, a faroli souffle, chocolate drops -- this is a small sampling of the dishes whose names jumped off the page to this reader, whether because they are unknown and exotic, or they seemed somehow quintessential to a country house occasion. A good number of the recipes bear the first or last name of a person, and this probably indicates the original source of the recipe. It can also be deduced from the comprehensiveness and length of the book that Murphy was a professional cook in a grand house. No ordinary housewife, nor a servant in a less august setting, is likely to have had her recipes collected in such a project. It is likely that at least part of the purpose of this book was to impart technique as well as much beloved dishes to other staff members and/or successors. After the nine page table of contents, listing all the recipes, there are three pages of miscellaneous remarks on cooking followed by sections on soups, fish, breakfast dishes, joints and meats, sweets and puddings, iced sweets, sweets and puddings and desserts again, savouries, vegetables, sauces, liquids, juices and jams and cakes and breads. Missing, although referred to in the index, is a section on knitting. Desserts, or sweets, are the vast majority of recipes. Most of the sheets are carbon, with a few the original, and most sheets have a few corrections of typos done by hand. Light soiling and wear to the typed leaves. A few are now loose in the binding.

London Robins 1838 First edition Cloth, and housed in a Custom Quarter Morocco Box Very Good
A stunning leporello of early Victorian pageantry, colored by hand, measuring 10 feet by 3.5 inches when extended, and the imagery is particularly bright and fresh, especially when compared to other leporellos depicting Victorian parades or processions from this period. Scarce, with only four institutional copies located on OCLC. Abbey Life 534. When closed, the oblong item measures 6.25 by 4 inches, and in its box it sits neatly, and elegantly, on a shelf. Occasional light foxing or soiling to the pictorial but overall remarkably clean. The folds are reinforced with fabric. The folds are not entirely even, causing some minor waviness to the paper when the boards are shut. The joints of the cloth boards somewhat crudely restored. Minor blistering to the cloth. The leporello snugly fits inside the attractive box. Minor rubbing and wear to the marbled paper of the box.

Smoking and Smokers; Also, Snuff and Snuff-Takers. With Numerous Wood Cuts
13 Smoking and Smokers; Also, Snuff and Snuff-Takers. With Numerous Wood Cuts
London Joseph Baker 1851 First Edition Blindstamped decorated cloth Very Good
Essentially two books, closely related in topic and tone, in one. 90 and 90 pp. 8to, 8 by 4.5 inches, 20 by 12 cm. With numerous often droll woodcut illustrations of smokers in their various attitudes and conceits. The work(s) treat seemingly all aspects of their subject, including history, statistical data regarding, and then countless other looser associative matters of which the very act of smoking invites, for smoking, and now the mostly bygone practice of taking snuff, so much more to their acolytes than the simple consumption of the stuff. Thus there are chapters on reveries concerning tobacco, of the pipe as a means of public instruction, on maxims regarding, on tobacco and the classics, and on and on. Without question these droll studies were written largely for the delectation of smokers and snuff-takers! The ranginess and sly wit of the author, together with his sometimes ardent arguments in favor of the products, make this one of those rare cultural and literary artefacts that can entertain the modern reader as the author intended yet also with the ironic detachment of our hindsight. Green blindstamped boards decorated with gilt. Rubbing along gutters. A light dampstain affects the margins of many pages yet more or less blends in with the moderate age toning of the leaves. Some starting of the rear hinge.

14 Swaine Adeney Briggs & Sons Limited Catalogue "Briggs" Umbrella
London Wraps Near Fine
N.d., circa 1950s. While the undated catalog is surely from the 1950s, with its mention of Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, it evokes an earlier era with its mix of classic products for gentlemen, ladies, and their servants, including hunting and beagling whips, polo and dressage whips, riding crops, umbrellas, walking sticks, seat sticks, gloves, picnic baskets and race hampers, clocks and compacts, trophies and car mascots, document cases, traveling and writing cases, leather goods, etc. The 72 page catalog is a treat for enthusiasts of things English, sporting paraphernalia, etc. The company of Swaine Adeney Briggs was formed by merger in 1943 with the oldest antecedent component dating back to 1750 when James Ross founded a whip making business. The Briggs part of the company enjoyed the Royal Warrant of Queen Victoria and at the time of the catalogue. The company remains based on Piccadilly, and now has several branches elsewhere in London. 8vo. Minor wear. Generally clean.

Principal item: 4to. 27.5 by 19 cm. 48 pp. Printed in black and red type on a high grade paper. With its gilt decoration on the Royal Blue leather, this was clearly a deluxe edition of the far more widely distributed cloth version. This copy is essentially pristine, with the slightest bend to the boards, as would have occurred naturally, its lovely condition a result of the protection provided by the original box. This box has a small "ER" pastedown decoration. One of its short sides is lost, and the box overall has considerable wear along its edges. The accompanying booklets are all very good or better, making for a lovely potpourri of royal momentos.

17 The Queen's Album of Sea Side
Rock & Co. (Rock Brothers & Payne) 1853-1860 First edition Cloth Very Good
Oblong, with each of twelve panels measuring 7.5 by 11 cm. Each panel presents a humorous scene of resort vacationers at the beach when swimwear covered the body almost as much as hijab. This is a souvenir, as leporellos often were, from a beach resort, presumably around Brighton, in the first flush of society's enthusiasm for such destinations for relaxation and rejuvenation. Scarce, with only copy located on OCLC at the British Library. Minor light soiling. Light wear to the folds. The gilt lettering and decoration on the folder boards faded somewhat.

[Photo Album] Souvenir 5th November 1920 The Willows Windsor
18 [Photo Album] Souvenir 5th November 1920 The Willows Windsor
Windsor, UK 1920 Half Morocco Very Good
A group of oversized photos that capture a somber yet celebratory occasion at a grand estate two years after the end of the First World War. Oblong, 27.5 by 38 cm. Twelve large original photographs of a grand country estate called "The Willows", taken when its owner was being honored for having turned it over to the British war effort. As depicted on Downton Abbey, many a palatial home served as a temporary hospital, a hospice, or some other use relating to the war effort. In this instance, the property owner was a man of Indian origin, Sir Dhunjobhoy Bomanji, who had made a fortune in textiles and shipping. From India's Parsee community. Bomanji was an ardent supporter of the British Empire -- He would soon afterward, in 1923, donate a statue of the World War One commander, Douglas Haig (the first Earl Haig), to the City of Edinburgh. Haig in fact is one of the guests at the luncheon party and among the distinguished guests shown in one of the photos. Other distinguished guests included Princess Alice, the Earl of Athlone, Lady Mary Chrichton, Lady Campbell, General Carteret-Carey and Captain Donald Simson. The other photos are of the house decked out with banners and bunting for the entertainment of 700 guests comprised of ex-servicemen, war widows and orphans, the band of the Life Guards, two photos of the dining room set up for but prior to the luncheon, the procession of 300 war orphans by the host and luncheon guests, among them a Hasidic child, the procession of disabled soldiers, the procession of non-crippled ex-servicement, Mr. Bomanji presenting a check of 5,000 pounds to Princess Alice, Earl Haig addressing the diabled soldiers and finally, a group photo of the host and his most distinguished guests -- those at the luncheon. Leather worn along joints in a few spots. Gilt lettering partly rubbed on front board.

19 [Prints] A pair of prints by T. Kay: Pension Hunter, 1793, and Demonstration or Cause & Effect,1817
T. Kay 1792 and 1817 Fine
The two prints are matted and framed similarly and thus work well as a pair of T. Kay satirical prints. They each measure 17.5 by 11 cm, and framed, 27 by 22 cm. Both are contained in the British Museum collection, which described the Pension Hunter as thus: A man wearing clerical bands with spurred top-boots stands directed to the right on an open Bible. His right hand is thrust in his waistcoat, his left holds close to his eyes an open book, 'Essay on the management of Bees'. Bees fly thickly above his head. The Bible is inscribed 'Revelation XIII And the World Wondered after the Beast.' The British Museum of the later print is as follows: Portrait of a stout man, full-length standing in profile to left, gesturing with his right hand as he speaks, holding a scroll in his left, wearing a dark suit with frilled cravat, fob and tall black hat.
