Lyon Apud Guliel 1567 First Edition Thus Full Vellum Very Good
8vo. [16], 1176 pp. Followed by long unpaginated glossary and index. With many woodcut illustrations throughout, varying sizes, with sometimes nearly full page to small vignettes, and often two or more illustrations on a page. Modern vellum that with Gothic lettering on spine, is compatible with the 16th century text. Text block is tight. Some soiling near front in lower corner and scattered soiling beyond, but for age toning, the text is quite clean. The woodcuts are of varying sharpness, but that is a function of their printing.

Costumi della corte Pontificia
4 Costumi della corte Pontificia
Roma 1846 First Edition Paper Pastedown on folder Near Fine
Leporello with 30 hand-colored images of Vatican costume, in addition to title with lovely colored decoration and cameo portrait of Gregorio XVI, which also helps date this as 1846 or earlier. The last leaf is pasted to a folder, which in this case has a distinctive faux burled wood (walnut-like) finish. The imagery is sharp, bright and clean. Some wear to the joints of the outer folder.

Costumi della Corte Pontificia
5 Costumi della Corte Pontificia
Roma A. Depolette First Edition Presumed Quarter Calf. Marbled Boards. Very Good Plus
N.d., circa 1840. Large paper version: folio, 34 by 23.5 cm. With 62 hand-colored costume plates, plus engraved title page with hand-colored vignette and dedication page with hand-colored portrait of Pope Pio IX. These images of Vatican dress, both which cover both ecclessiastic and military costume, are generally encountered in a far smaller, leporello format, with also fewer images -- typically thirty plates. In this other guise, the target audience were the many tourists who paid a visit to Rome and were enamored with a pocket souvenir. The diminutive leporello assuredly exudes enormous charm that has not diminished over nearly two centuries, but the images really do not quite match these original Marroni engravings with their excellent detailing and glorious hand-coloring, and we would stress, the coloring is not only brilliant, but also it would appear not to have lost one bit of lustre from the day it was applied to paper. Scuffs to leather. Newer marbled paper pastedown on boards. A small amount of scattered light soiling and/or foxing, mostly in the early leaves, such as there is.

Mainz and Frankfurt Johann Hoffners 1746 Full Calf Good
740, 216 pp. With 77 copper plate engravings and a portion (about 25 percent) of a map of Jerusalem, showing the walls of the ancient city, Pilate's palace, the Garden of Gethsemane, etc. Two books bound together. The book is printed in a variety of differing type fonts which differentiate such things as the prayers for feast days from the narrative of Christ's life and lives of those in his circle. Full Brown calf with raised bands at spine and remnants of straps and clasps over real wooden boards. Boards professionally repaired. Leather heavily scuffed and rubbed, with considerable dryness, yet nonetheless fitting in this condition for work at hand. Early pages have margin losses. Heavily toned elsewhere, along with at times heavy soilage and wear. Overall still good. In a specially made slipcase with hand-made paper skin. (Slipcase doesn't cover all of boards, and this was deliberate choice because spine is thicker than opposite edge of volume.) The book is 8.5 by 7 inches and 3.5 inches thick.

7 Handbook on Personal Evangelism Each One Win One Campaign of Personal Evangelism of the Disciples of Christ in America to Win 100,000
Wraps Very Good
Man lives not by bread alone. But a little bread -- or a lot of bread -- isn't so bad to think about now and then. 15 by 8 cm. 24 pp. plus wraps. A how-to-do-it-yourself on evangelism, tied to a campaign meant to suggest a sweepstakes of $100,000,although this would seem to be a little false advertising or a deliberately misleading pitch, since no where are dollars actually mentioned. But what means are justified when the ends are divine? The booklet is full of practical information such as baptism requirements, and an abundance of handy biblical citations.

Heures du Moyen Age
8 Heures du Moyen Age
Paris Gruel & Englemann 1887 First edition Full Morocco Fine
Lavish 19th century rendering of a Book of Hours using bright chromolithography that cogently replicates the exquisite detail, sublimity and sheer miraculousness of the Medieval biblio staple. Each of the 192 plates (including title page) is unique with the high Gothic ornamentation that is usually encountered only under glass at better art museums. Usually the ornament frames Gothic type of the text in French and Latin, but occasionally the framed is instead a miniature painting. Credits for this production are Engelmann, artistic director and chromolithography; painting, Ed. Moreau; actual printing on stone, A. Pralon. Lush silk moire endpapers. Dentelle ornamentation on leather perimeter. All leaves are bright and clean, and the binding is tight. Gilt TEG. Silk ribbon placemark intact. Metal mounts on boards with crown and initials HE and floreate design for clasp stays. A minor scratch of brown morocco on front board and the most minor of shelfwear besides. Book measures 6.5 by 5 inches, or 16 by 13 cm. Other than loss of leather strap clasps, this is about as good as it gets.

9 History of the Bible
Hartford Julius Gilman 1827 First edition Full Calf Very Good
178 pp, each measuring 2 by 1.5 inches, 52 by 40 mm, with 11 woodcut plates. With bookplate of Cornelius J. Hauck Collection, thus providing a distinguished provenance. This collection was formed between 1945 and 1965 to document the history of the book. The private collection was put together under the guidance of the highly regarded bookseller Emil Offenbacher. The collection was given to the Cincinnati Historical Society, which became the Cincinnati Museum Center, and it was deaccessed in 2006 by auction at Christie's (where it sold for $960). Hauck's family fortune was made in brewing and then investments, and the Haucks are among the most prominent of Cincinnati families. Some wear to the binding, but overall it remains uncommonly bright and well-preserved. Minor soilage of leaves, which also overall clean. A tight and handsome copy.

Jinshiki Hokan
10 Jinshiki Hokan
Fair
Fabulous color woodblocks of Foo Dogs, screens, boxes, tea sets, swords, bows and arrows and other weaponry, banners, furniture, mats, carriages and chaises, horses, etc., with black and white imagery mostly architectural. We believe this is a work relating primarily to the Shinto Religion, but as clear from the wide assortment of imagery, this takes in a very broad swath of Japanese material culture at the time. 19th Century. 24.5 by 16.5 cm. 130 pp., 96 of which have woodblock prints, 47 of which are in color (some of the images are double paged, which we have counted as two pages). Original cover and title slip. Untrimmed, full margins. However, heavy wear to cover, moderate to at times heavy soiling of leaves -- but not all leaves. This includes some dampstaining. The color is bright where it occurs, however, and still an appealing woodblock book of some rarity.

11 Life Among the Shakers
New York Wemple & Company Wraps Near Fine
N.d., circa 1880. 36 pp small brochure, including front and back cover which each feature a color lithograph, one of a child, the other, of a Sunday at Mount Lebanon, New York, where the Shakers had a community (today there is a Shaker Museum there). The account of Mary Carr forms just the springboard for a rambling first person discussion of the Shakers, where they have settled, their philosophy, their customs, their industry, with a particular focus on a panacea product created by a Mrs. Speigel which the Shakers have taken to manufacturing. The narrator of this exegesis is uncredited in the brochure. Finally at the end of the brochure comes testimonials for the medicine, which suggests that the brochure was in fact an advertisement or promotion that had the hook of a tangentially related human interest article(s) about the Shakers. On the rear it is indicated that the brochure was "presented by" E. M. Hart of Union Springs, N.Y. In any case, the scarce brochure, a mere 5 by 3 inches in dimensions, is scarce and interesting. Two woodcuts in the text besides the cover illustrations.

15 Wyirhen Buchlein auf dem Kreuz Weeg unsers Heilands Jesu Christi in Virzehen Betrachung abgetheit.
Bavaria Full Calf Very Good
A folk rococo manuscript rendering of "The Fourteen Stations of the Cross". N.d., circa early to mid-18th century. 12mo. 15.5 by 10 cm. Unpaginated, 37 leaves, almost all with beautiful traditional painted folk art ornamentation -- peasant Rococo, if you will. Also several other pages with original art, two with armorial art, a third, and a highlight of the whole manuscript, a highly unusual rendering of baby Jesus, and finally a decorative title page. Each of the stations is presented first with a copper engraved print, followed by one leaf, or two pages, of original manuscript describing the incident and its significance. The text is written in what is now an inscrutable German cursive, but the headings are in a calligraphic Fraktur, and as noted, everything is framed by decorative Rococo flourishes. A final text leaf, two pages, is written in a far more legible and decorative Gothic, and much of its second page is taken up with yet another, different, coat-of-arms. On a blank is written in pencil a name in an opaque Sutterlin Schrift. We can decipher the first name as "Josef" but the long surname we are not certain of. We assume this is the name of a subsequent owner, and not the artist who produced the book. The frontis Baby Jesus is robed in actual fabric, and this has borders of raised paper. But even more extraordinary is the the border tracery, the rays of light emanating from Jesus' head, and the podest, or pedestal, at the base. On the flat page the ornamentation is subdued, pleasant but not eye-catching. But if one looks closely, one discerns that it is entirely created by the punching of minute holes through the paper. If one holds the leaf up to the light, suddenly an ethereal intricacy emerges. The design is visible from the other side of the leaf, where its loose outline is traced in pencil -- the tool in laying out the design. The three coat-of-arms are each different. The first of three features a man on top holding two sickles. The sickle is repeated four times within the escutcheon below. At the base one finds lettering, which while very legible, is ambiguous because it is not known whether letters are partially and artfully superimposed. The second has two dice among the decorative tools that serve as the other symbols! The third has two birds above, two within, the escutcheon. Below are the initials here entirely clear: P.C.F., but their significance is probably unknowable. While the subject matter is among the most central to the Christian faith, the book itself is an object of beauty that can be appreciated for its folk artwork independent of its pietistic content, although one should not minimize the centrality of religion in inspiring such an effort. All edges gilt. Leather heavily worn and darkened, with large losses on the spine, and dryness generally. One can still evince the decorative tooling on the boards, but there is no remains of gilt. Scattered soiling within but in general, the contents are bright and attractive.

[Faux Books][Folk Art Mechanical Toy Book] Holy Bible
16 [Faux Books][Folk Art Mechanical Toy Book] Holy Bible
Wood boards. Very Good
Highly unusual fun piece of folk art, with the "Bible" springing up with the touch of a lever. Most definitely one-of-a-kind! N.d., circa 1900, possibly earlier. In size, like a 4to. 33 by 25 cm, 14 cm thick. The bible resembles an early 19th century leather bible. Here, though, the boards and sides are of wood, with the spine a heavy cloth which is painted to look like leather, and with the paint looks not unlike a paper mache composition. The snap is on the fore-edge, with the metal lever on the top. All sides are painted in gilt. Moderate wear throughout, as befitting an old heirloom bible.

The contemporary calf is somewhat dry and crackled on the spine, with wear elsewhere, but still attractive. Small edge cut-out to a blank prelim page. 18 [Fore-Edge Painting] The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments, and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church, According to the Use of the United Church of England and Ireland; Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David, . . .
Oxford Clarendon Press. Printer: Samuel Collingwood and Co. 1826 Full Calf Good
Fore-edge painting of the Thames bank and St. Paul's Cathedral. (The panorama looks slightly like one of Venice, curiously.) 8vo. 21.5 by 14 cm. 368, 118 pp. The full black calf has a blindstamped impression of a Gothic window on the boards, with ruled blindstamped borders, gilt ornamental bands, etc., and elaborate gilt Celtic-inspired motives on the spine between the wide raised bands. The binding remains attractive, although it is obvious that there was a rebacking, with original spine laid on. The fore-edge is moderately faded.
