1 Biblia Sacra, Ad optima quaeque veteris, & vulgate translationis exeplaria summa diligentia, pariq; fide castigata. Cum Hebraicorum, Caldaorum & Graecorum nominu interpretatione.
Lyon Apud Guliel 1567 First Edition Thus Full Vellum Very Good
8vo. [16], 1176 pp. Followed by long unpaginated glossary and index. With many woodcut illustrations throughout, varying sizes, with sometimes nearly full page to small vignettes, and often two or more illustrations on a page. Modern vellum that with Gothic lettering on spine, is compatible with the 16th century text. Text block is tight. Some soiling near front in lower corner and scattered soiling beyond, but for age toning, the text is quite clean. The woodcuts are of varying sharpness, but that is a function of their printing.

Mainz and Frankfurt Johann Hoffners 1746 Full Calf Good
740, 216 pp. With 77 copper plate engravings and a portion (about 25 percent) of a map of Jerusalem, showing the walls of the ancient city, Pilate's palace, the Garden of Gethsemane, etc. Two books bound together. The book is printed in a variety of differing type fonts which differentiate such things as the prayers for feast days from the narrative of Christ's life and lives of those in his circle. Full Brown calf with raised bands at spine and remnants of straps and clasps over real wooden boards. Boards professionally repaired. Leather heavily scuffed and rubbed, with considerable dryness, yet nonetheless fitting in this condition for work at hand. Early pages have margin losses. Heavily toned elsewhere, along with at times heavy soilage and wear. Overall still good. In a specially made slipcase with hand-made paper skin. (Slipcase doesn't cover all of boards, and this was deliberate choice because spine is thicker than opposite edge of volume.) The book is 8.5 by 7 inches and 3.5 inches thick.

A mid-sixteenth century Luther bible containing 137 woodcuts Swiss artist Jost Amman, including four full page, all hand-colored. Folio, 33 by 23 cm. (11 lbs.) Collation: )(3-8, a3-6, b1-7, A2-3, A5-6, B1-3, B5-6, C-E6, F1-5, G-Z6, a-z6, aa-ff6, 4 blank leaves, A-Z6, a-n6, o2-6, p-z6, aa-qq6, A-Q6, R8, S-V6, X8. Lacking [*]1-2)(1-2, b8, A1, A4, B4, F6, o1 (NT title). To simplify this collation, preliminaries are unpaginated, then leaves numbered, 317, 370, 129 unpaginated leaves. The missing leaves are the general title, four prelim or prefatory leaves, three from Genesis: numbers 1, 4, 10, one from Exodus: 36, and the New Testament Title. Numerous closed tears, a few large, scattered through the bible, with only two woodcuts touched, but suffering no loss of imagery. These two are in Revelations, which was clearly thumbed through more frequently. Generally the woodcuts are unscathed, and the color remains vibrant. A few other leaves with marginal note losses, and a few instances of paper repair in the margins (but no facsimilization of margin text loss). One leaf, 193 (OT) with corner chunk loss. Dampstaining in bottom and inner margins of most pages. As with chipping and loss, the soiling is heaviest in the early leaves. The core is generally free of heavy blemishing. Calf, probably at least eighteenth century, heavily worn, dry and scuffed, and spine strip is gone. First and last half dozen leaves chipped and heavily worn along edges, with some loss of text. A few other leaves with marginal note losses, and a few instances of paper repair in the margins (but no facsimilization of margin text loss).

Il Primo Volume Delle Rime Scelte da Diversi Autori, di Nuove Corrette e Ristampate, Dolce, Lodovico
10 Dolce, Lodovico Il Primo Volume Delle Rime Scelte da Diversi Autori, di Nuove Corrette e Ristampate
Vinegia (Venezia, or Venice) Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari 1564 Full Vellum Very Good
[36], 624 pp. 5.75 inches, 13 cm, tall. An anthology of verse from the Renaissance (the sixteenth century), some writers now obscure, others still well-known (Castiglione, della Casa, Annibal Caro). Lodovico Dolce (1508 - 1568) was a Venetian poet, playwright, translator and versatile belletrist known for his prolific and varied writings. Nonetheless relatively little is known about the details of his life. It is believed that he was sympathetic to Reformation thought, which established quite a strong toehold in the mid-16th century Venice he inhabited. Dolce's publisher, Gabriele Giolito, in fact, was at the forefront of this movement, and it is from the tight collaboration between the two that Dolce's own propensities have been inferred. Widely regarded as a man of extraordinary erudition, Dolce was unquestionably an important literary figure of his day, as exemplified by his contributions to various editions of Aristo, Bembo, and others, not to mention his own works, yet it seems that he is one with most writers in having failed to earn a fortune from his prodigious legacy. This is a lovely copy, bound in full vellum, with gauffawed edges and hand-tooled tulips beneath the gilt. While a second volume was issued to the anthology a year later, the two are seldom found together and this work should be seen as a standalone volume and is NOT part of a broken set. The velllum does have soilage but has held up very well generally-speaking. The leaves also have some light scattered soilage but are overall clean. A lovely copy.

11 Guarini, Battista Il Pastor Fido, Tragicommedia Pastorale: Ora in questa nuova impressione di bellissime figure in rame ornato
Amsterdam Appresso Lodovico Elzevier 1640 Vellum Very Good Plus
Book. 48mo - over 3 - 4" tall. 285 pp. Engraved title page + 3 additional full page engraved plates, with names of characters written underneath figures. Early miniature illustrated book version of Guarini's 1590 pastoral masterpiece, which is also one of the cornerstones of the Italian canon. The book measures 3.5 by 2 inches, or 8.5 by 5 cm. Printing possibly by Willem Blaeu of Elzevier. Final pages have worm hole, which diminishes to pinhole sized loss on text pages in two-thirds of leaves in lower margin. On a few leaves loss of a few letters but text remains readable. Other than this leaves are clean. Period vellum has some wear, blistering and limpness. Still an asset to the book. New attractive endpapers.

Frankfurt am Mayn [Georg Raben, with Sigmund Feyrabends und Simon Huters] 1566 Third edition Pigskin Very Good
Small folio, 34 by 21 cm, 13 by 8 inches. [6], ccxliii, [3], [4], lxxxi. Early coloring sets this copy apart. Abundant woodcuts attributed to Josse Amman and Feyerabend. Brunet IV 1471. The illustrations depict, of course, jousting tournaments, but also banquets, music-making, courtship and festivities that went along with the tournaments and military marches and activity that were the real impetus for the tournament and its particular culture. In addition many of the decorative devices and many coat-of-arms are colored. This is an early history of tournaments, and surely the most comprehensive on the topic at the time of its appearance and still a meaty work on the topic, notwithstanding some inaccuracies. As might be expected, the illustrations show everyone in typical mid-sixteenth century attire regardless of actual period. Remarkable about the color is the variety of color employed in the better examples. While there are places where the colors appear to have been daubed in a looser wash manner, overall the colors were carefully and neatly applied and the result is a far livelier pictorial element than otherwise would have been the case. The color also served the practical objective of bringing out the detail. There are 116 color pictures in all, generally measuring 10.5 by 14 cm, with some of the images repeated a few times. In addition there are 74 pages with images of coat-of-arms hand-colored. Approximately half of these pages have multiple images on the page. Some coat-of-arms reappear several times. Finally counted were 26 leaves with hand-colored decoration or decorative devices. There are actually three parts of this book, or perhaps one might think of it as three works bound in one, and the other parts have their own titles. The second title is "Warhafftige Beschreibunge aller kurzweil und Ritterspil . . . " and the third part is entitled: Des Allerdurchleuchtigste Grossmechtigsten Keyser Carols dess funfften froliche Gluckselige Ankunfft . . . " (Please be aware that the German is Mitteldeutsch or early modern and thus the spellings are at considerable variance with contemporary German.) Bound in period pigskin, with intricate stamped ornamentation and a regal figure in the center. The off white patina has considerable soilage darkening very much in keeping with age. Later spine label chipped around edges. Small stamp at base of spine, possibly a library stamp, but this is a rare instance in which the stamp seems fitting and is not the least bit disconcerting. One of two antique metal clasps has piece broken off. Some chips along edges of the title page and some pages within have chips or minor losses and/or closed tears. One leaf had largish corner loss and was remedied with new paper and handwritten or manuscript version of the still comparatively small loss of text. There are a few repaired tears. In general stains and soilage are minor.
