1 Buchkunst: Beiträge zur Entwicklung der Graphischen Künste und der Kunst im Buche. (2 Volumes)
Leipzig Staatlich Akademie für Graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe 1931, 1935 Limited First Editions Cloth Near Fine
1,000 and 1,350 limitations respectively. Two volumes, issued four years apart, but forming arguably a complete set of the publication. Two other volumes were later published in 1959 and 1963, respectively, but these can be viewed as a separate unit. 4to. 31 by 21.5 cm. 139, 141 plates, [11], 140, 183 plates, [9] pp. A potpourri of topics on bindings, book illustration, typography and the book arts, with a profusion of plates, a good many lucious, and the geographic sweep international, or definitively non-parochial! Topics include Charles Ricketts, O.H.W. Hadank, Carl Ernst Poeschel, the woodcut artist Hans Alexander Muller, illustrator Adoph Schrodter, Dutch, American, Swiss, and Swedish bindings of the period, an extensive article on children's books, flower books, French lithography, Czech typography of Slavoboj Tusars, S.J.A. Symons' press, the Hungarian book artist Dr. Ernst Namenyi, etc. Because of the many plates, the work is one that can be appreciated and plumbed even by those not conversant in German, but certainly the greatest value is to be found on the pieces relating to important book artists of whom there is a paucity of scholarly consideration in the literature. The two volumes are handsome, with their buckram spines and rag textured stationary paper pastedown boards. Both volumes are tight and clean.

[Broadside] "Auca" de la Vida y Adventuras de un libro Viejo [Story and Adventures of an Old Book], Eroles, Emilio. Illustrator: Antonio Roca
8 Eroles, Emilio. Illustrator: Antonio Roca [Broadside] "Auca" de la Vida y Adventuras de un libro Viejo [Story and Adventures of an Old Book]
Barcelona Gremio de Libreros de Barcelona 1956 First edition NA Fine
A most unusual promotion for an antiquarian book fair! 43.5 by 31.5 cm. 30 cells with cartoon drawings recounting the life of an 100 year old book -- the actual physical object -- from its first sale to its appearance at an antiquarian book fair! The story is in the tradition of "Black Beauty", "The Memoirs of an Umbrella", or "The Yellow Rolls Royce", all concerning the ups and downs incident to different owners, and in the case of the latter two, there is the commonality of the personification of an inanimate thing. Here, the book starts in Barcelona and in its circuitous path that takes it all the way to Paris and the Eiffel Tower and a Seine "bouquinist", comes to rest finally again in Barcelona in a stall at the Feria Annual del Libro de Occasion, Antiguo y Moderno, still an annual event held by the local booksellers' guild, and thus one of the oldest running antiquarian book fairs today. We note that this is a story arc that resembles that of "Black Beauty". The format of the broadside is called "auca", which is an uniquely Catalan graphic format. The captions, by Eroles, are all three line rhymed couplets in Spanish. In 1972, Eroles wrote and published in Catalan a book on bookselling in Barcelona called "Memoires d'un llibre vell". The broadside can not be found in OCLC.

Venezia (Venice) Appresso Cristoforo Zane 1737 Vellum Fine Michael Sorello

Also stately headpiece atop first dedication page, smaller decoration at beginning of each of three books and "La Biblioteca". Hybrid work of Italian belle lettres and literature which provides an early history of the Italian language, and an invaluable early summary of the important works of Italian literature up to that time. Fontanini in this included works from all parts of the Italian peninsula, and he a mixture of summary and/or analysis to the works singled out. This copy of this rare work is in fine condition. The contemporary (or near contemporary) vellum bindign has only light soilage. Four raised bands on spine, with brown title/author/date label in one panel in great shape. Tiny separation of les than 1/4 inch at top of rear joint. Pages remarkably clean and fresh, binding tight. Fine.

Gli Adornatori del Libro in Italia (Volumes 1 to 3), Petri, Stanislao; Ratta, Cesare; Sapori, Francesco
20 Petri, Stanislao; Ratta, Cesare; Sapori, Francesco Gli Adornatori del Libro in Italia (Volumes 1 to 3)
Bologna Impreso coil Tipi della Scuola D'Arte Tipografica del Comune del Bologna 1923-1926 First edition Cloth Very Good
Survey of then modern book and bookplate illustration in Italy. This is a continuous, but not complete, run of 9 volume series that ran into the early 1930s, but each issue does standalone and generally speaking can only be found individually. Offered here as a set of three. Folio sized, 14 by 10 inches, or 36 by 26 cm. Vol I has 112 plates, with 328 designs, and was one of a limited edition of 850 copies. Vol II, issued two years later, has 220 plates with 420 designs and was a limited edition of 500. Volume III, issued in 1925 to 1926, with 240 plates (plates 114 to 117 not present but no evidence they ever were present). Limited edition of 850. Plates are not only lovely in and of themselves and a carefully curated cross-section of Italian book art of the day, but also a fine overview of Italian aesthetics then, reacting to the over-ripeness of the nineteenth century with a more pared down, even brutal style at times, that is modernism, whether art deco or even more abstract. Not that there weren't still manifest the more literal historicisms -- one should not think there was a monolithic approach to all this. Bookplate of Augustus Carolus Becker who is probably the same person who ran a private press in Brooklyn. Red cloth binding in original wrappers. Cloth has some stains, soilage and shelfwear but remain presentable. All text blocks are tight and leaves are generally clean. Other than possible missing 4 plates in vol 3, interior-wise a fine set.
