"State Caterpillars, or Members of the Plot Club." [together with] An Account of the Proceedings Against Her Majesty Queen Caroline . . . Bound Collection of Caricature Cards Inspired by the Divorce Trial of George the Fourth and Queen Caroline
1 "State Caterpillars, or Members of the Plot Club." [together with] An Account of the Proceedings Against Her Majesty Queen Caroline . . . Bound Collection of Caricature Cards Inspired by the Divorce Trial of George the Fourth and Queen Caroline
London J. Turner 1820 Full Sprinkled Sheep Near Fine
The principal item in this set is a bound collection of 24 hand-colored caricature cards that were inspired by the divorce proceedings brought by George the Fourth against his wife, Queen Caroline. The trial and its ignominious lead-up of libels, charges and counter-charges, was a scandal of the day that today would have produced endless fodder for the tabloids and would certainly now be dubbed, "the trial of the century" or "the divorce of the century." Because it involved the king, the trial was held in the House of Lords, which ultimately rebuffed the king's petition. Caroline, though, passed away in xxx shortly after the trial. The divorce was

A Los Toros! Viva Espana!
4 A Los Toros! Viva Espana!
Valencia Lit. S. Dura Leporellos Very Good
N.d., circa 1890. Oblong, 10.5 by 15 cm. 12 color plates depicting crowd heading to arena on the front cover, then within the leporello all the pageantry and ritual of the bull fight, with an illustration of the bulls reposing in a pasture on the back cover. The panorama was almost certainly produced as a souvenir -- a keepsake for someone attending the bullfight and hawked by peddlers calling out to passerbys on the periphery of the arena. The quality of the printing is not necessarily of the highest level, but the arrangement of the images in a leporello has a compact charm all its own. Light age toning, and trivial signs of wear.

A Tour Through Paris, Illustrated with Seventeen Colored Plates, Accompanied with Descriptive Letter-Press
5 A Tour Through Paris, Illustrated with Seventeen Colored Plates, Accompanied with Descriptive Letter-Press
London William Sams Quarter Calf Very Good
N.d., 1834. Folio-sized, 14 by 10 inches, or 36 by 25 cm. The subject matter of the plates is full of delight and surprise, and the composition and coloring is singularly tasteful and sublime. Highlights are surely the dancers on stilts, the blind man on the bridge, the juggler or the charcoal porters. But this is not an early, Parisian version of "London Poor" or the street life of Paris, for we encounter people from all walks of life, and we are taken to places more private, such as the interior of a swimming school! Perhaps the most exception aspect of this collection of plates is how it teems with life. Every plate has a real story to tell -- this is not a mere collection of costume or caricature! Most of the plates are watermarked 1822, and we find also 1824. Tooley 444. (This edition omits four plates from the 1822 edition.) Text leaves with scattered light to moderate foxing, more prevalent on title and some prelim pages, as well as tissue guards. Plates are generally clean, and the little bits of soiling in the margins of a few is trivial. One plate with margin chip. Corner dampstain affecting corner of early leaves. In sum, the defects of the text pages is more than compensated by the general luster of the plates.

A Trip through the Colortype Plant of the Zeese-Wilkinson Company 424 West Thirty third Street, New York
6 A Trip through the Colortype Plant of the Zeese-Wilkinson Company 424 West Thirty third Street, New York
New York The Zeese-Wilkinson Company 1916 First Edition Wraps. String tie. Near Fine
Folio, 32 by 24 cm. Unpaginated, 80 pp. (including title), 32 of which are examples, or color plates, mostly of advertisements, generally ones of considerable beauty, or book covers, catalogue pages, etc. The product photographs are especially striking. Discussions of plate making with color (followed by the examples), color printing, many black and white photos of the company's plant, a brief discussion of the New York City location, and a few ads for the enterprises that contributed to the book (inks, electrotypes, etc.) Overall, this is a lovely production on color printing by a color printer, and is a hybrid between an exposition on printing and trade promotion. Light wear. Tiny corner chip on rear cover. Pristine within, with the thick glossy leaves immaculate.

Advertise with Art Advertising Blotters. The Useful, Lasting inexpensive Medium
7 Advertise with Art Advertising Blotters. The Useful, Lasting inexpensive Medium
G. Litho. Co. (?) Wraps Near Fine
N.d., circa 1930s. (Date given of 193- in one of the illustrations, and the idealized women in many of the blotter illustrations are hennied platinum blonds as were the thing in the early 1930s.) 4to. 30 by 22 cm. 37 pp. plus 12 separate samples in two different sizes. All the samples are folded down their center. When open, the larger samples are 30.5 by 40 cm, oblong, and the smaller ones, 23 by 30 cm, oblong. The idea here was for a large, splashy pictorial onto which a company could print its contact info and other promotional material, either on the picture itself or more often, the flip side. A common use of these blotters was as menus such as one might find at a diner. The blotters might alternatively serve as a top sheet of a brochure, or as pictures for a calendar, attachments to the ad proper, etc. The pictures on offer vary widely, and can be divided into categories such as scenic views, cheesecake pin-ups, genre scenes (foxhunting, dining, folksy Norman Rockwell, etc.), cutesie juvenilia (babies and small children doing various things), sporting, holiday-oriented, repros of evocative artwork. Many of the illustrations straddle more than one category. Probably the come hither nymphets -- think a young Joan Crawford, Marion Davies or Jean Harlow -- and the bucolic prospects are the most salient types, and one might surmise, the biggest sellers. Unknown is the exact name of the company that produced this catalogue. The catalogue and separate samples are all clean and show the most gentle of prior handling.

Album of 48 Color Plates, one double paged, Paris-Toilette, Daydou Fils
9 Album of 48 Color Plates, one double paged, Paris-Toilette, Daydou Fils
Paris Daydou Fils. Imprimerie Lafontaine & Fils 1891 First edition Hardcover Very Good
Folio, 43 by 32 cm. 48 hand-colored plates, one double paged, followed by nine double paged plates, on thin paper, of the same fashions shown in black and white. Paris-Toilette was a fashion magazine issued monthly which would appear to have been heavily oriented towards such color plates, but what we have here is not issues as such but rather a collection of the plates issued by the magazine during the Spring months, and perhaps a little earlier, of 1891. The magazine itself is hard to come by, with the only copies located at the Met, the Danish National Library and Penn State, according to OCLC First Search. (Nothing comes up at the BNF when we search "Paris Toilette Daydou", strangely enough.) The images show somewhat generic looking beautiful women of the era in elaborate, gorgeous gowns. Joints repaired. Fraying and wear to cloth, and moderate wear overall. A few small closed tears to the color plates, and substantial repair to one of the black and white double plates.

Album of a Dozen Chinese Watercolors of Ships and Boats on Pith Paper
10 Album of a Dozen Chinese Watercolors of Ships and Boats on Pith Paper
Hardcover. Silk pastedown. Good
N.d., 19th century. Oblong, 13 by 16.5 cm. Wonderful luminous coloring, with small people, waterfowl and waves represented as well as a wide variety of Chinese boats, from junks and houseboats to impressive galleons. The pith paper has the typical scattered tears, chips and losses. Edge wear, slight tattering and soiling of the silk. Still all the pictorial representations are intact, bright and visually exciting.

11 Album of Seventeen Hand-Colored Plates Circa 1855
Good
Oblong, 22 by 34 cm. 17 plates. The plates depict hunters, country scenes, bandits, children who have come upon a bird's nest, flower maidens. The location of these scenes can not be pinpointed, but depending on the plate, it could be Italy, the Tyrol, France or even the Lowlands. The coloring is muted, and this effect is further accentuated by the plates being printed on a dark card. The album was the type that a customer would typically have had a printseller create after choosing the prints he wished to have included. There is an inscription on the FEP dated 1856. Other than minor finger soiling, the plates are clean. The white paper pastedown on the cover is heavily soiled, and the binding has been rebacked.

Album of Sixteen Hand-Colored Aquatint Swiss Views
12 Album of Sixteen Hand-Colored Aquatint Swiss Views
Zurich H. F. Leuthold; Dikenman. Cloth Very Good
N.d., circa 1840. Oblong 4to. 25.5 by 33.5 cm. Views of Rigi, Zurich, Luzerne, the Rhine Falls, Hof Ragaz, Giessbach, Brienz, Interlaken, the Wetterhorn, the Staubach, Thun, and Vevey. The coloring is lush, the detailing, precise, and these plates are very much in the tradition of Lory, in their style and their quality. We believe this was an album that was assembled by a tourist, who would have chosen from a selection at a print shop and arranged, probably there, to have the prints then handsomely bound. Most of the prints were published by Dikenman, with a few by Leuthold. A few abrasions on the red pebbled cloth, which bears an owner's initials and has blindstamped and gilt ruled decoration. Tissue guards within with creases. Some marginal soiling. Pictures themselves are clean and stunning.

13 Album of Sixteen Hand-Colored Plates of Erotica
Half Calf over Floral Fabric Very Good
Circa 1820, almost surely of Italian origin, and probably Neopolitan. Erotica undoubtedly goes back to when the first artists scrawled figures onto cave walls, but being that so much of it is by its nature and intent "ephemera", it is elusive finding much of it created in pre-Victorian "Modern" Europe. From the dress and adornments we can date these unsigned, undated plates as from approximately 1820. The racy, raucous and raunchy vignettes, some very funny, should speak for themselves, but surely they suggest that when it comes to things priapic, phallic and pornographic, the purveyors of such in our "liberated" times were just imitators. The drawings also make broad swipes at the Church, and therein lies much of the fun. The book is an oblong 8.5 by 7 inches, or 22 by 17.5 cm, and the images are all contained or held down by thick frames and then protected by tissue guards. There is some finger soiling here and there but in general the pictorials are bright and clean. Some scuffing to the leather of the binding.

Album of Twenty Tinted and Hand-Colored Genre Plates Depicting Rural Life
14 Album of Twenty Tinted and Hand-Colored Genre Plates Depicting Rural Life
Paper pastedown on boards Good Plus
N.d., circa 1850. Oblong, 22 by 34 cm. 20 tinted plates with people and their clothing colored. The album is of the type that a collector would have assembled and had bound at the print shop where he gathered the plates. A number of the plates explicitly depict Italian peasants and fishermen, while others one can tell are of Italians of the day based on dress. But other plates take us to Brittany, the Lowlands and France, and one outlier of a plate shows soldiers in the Sahara escorting a maiden. All the illustrations are picturesque, with their subjects being children, hunters, animal husbandry, etc. Brief captions describing the subjects are rendered in English, French, German and Dutch, suggesting these were prints marketed to the tourist trade. The album itself is decorated with a colorful floral garland. Its white paper pastedown is now heavily soiled, and the spine has been rebacked with cloth, but it remains an attractive cover. The margins of the plates have some finger smudging, giving a slightly grubby appearance to the leaves, and a few plates have a dampstain in an inner corner. One small closed tear. Generally the pictures are unaffected.

15 Allerlei kleine Herrschaften
Hardcover. Paper pastedown. Cloth spine. Near Fine
N.d., circa 1920. Small folio. 33.5 by 25.5 cm. Unpaginated, 16 pp., half of which (8) are color plates depicting children in various activities. The style is a naive-flavored post-Impressionism -- big splotches of flat colors, a slightly dark palette of the Baltic region. Scarce title, with no copies located on OCLC FirstServe, and not listed in well-known bibliographies such as Wegehaupt or Klotz. Strangely no information in the book about the author, illustrator or publisher! Minor abrasions along edges and spine. Papers toned, but overall, remarkably well-preserved.

Scarce, with only copy found on OCLC at the National Library of Sweden. 16mo. 107 by 88 mm. Unpaginated, 48 pp. Four hand-colored plates depicting a young couple. The plates capture the Biedermeier, high Romantic, sensibility perfectly. Lovely paper pastedown binding, with intricate combining of decorative motives we associate with the period. Moderate wear to the cover, with a distinct diagonal crease line in the upper corner. Still a handsome binding.

17 Alphabet en Figures
Paris J. Langlumé et Peltier 1835 First Edition Hardcover. Paper pastedown Good
12mo. 17.5 by 10.5 cm. 46 pp. 24 hand-colored plates, plus hand-colored title page. Scarce French ABC, with only copies found at Princeton, Indiana, and the BNF. (Not including digital versions.) Unusual Abecedaire as well, with entries one might not expect to presented to the young, such as "Odalisque" for "O", "Grec en guerre" for "G", or "Turk fumant" for "T", especially given the pietistic nature of some of the other entries such as "Pape" for "P" or "Confession" for "C". The religious tenor of the ABC is in keeping with the Restoration Period in France, when the Catholic Church was welcomed again into civic society. Other entries are more generic French patriotic fare, such as Napoleon and Henri IV. Le Men 274. With Romantic cartonnage paper pastedown cover. The paper pastedown is chipped along the joints, with considerable loss at the spine base, and with numerous small spots of rubbing on the boards, but with its floral Medieval Revival diaper, quite unusual and still handsome. Foxing, heavy-ish at times, on the text leaves, lighter and less frequent on the plates, which are of a heavier paper stock as well. Child's scrawl of particular letter on plate (the letter corresponding with the plate) in pencil is erasable, and mostly erased, but one can see a slight depression in the paper where the scrawl was.

18 Apolline et Dancourt, Histoire Veritable. [Bound with] L'Hyver et L'Ete, Pastorale. [And] La Foret de Breteuil. Pastorale.
Amsterdam Marc Michel Rey 1769 First Edition Quarter Sheep Very Good Minus
With six original watercolor and ink drawings of the novel. 12mo. 17 by 10 cm. 335 pp. The watercolors were executed by a non-professional artist, possibly a juvenile one. Nevertheless, their brightness and naive style applied to the rarefied world of chateau interiors, gardens and forest exudes an irresistible charm, and rather well complements the pastorale conventions of the novel about the aches and tribulations of young love. Lacking two title pages (one being for the second part of the novel, or pp. 161/2). Spine rubbed, and wear to boards.
