"Painted" Sheet of Ten Cupon de Racionamiento, Post-Spanish Civil War Falange Ration Stamps
1 "Painted" Sheet of Ten Cupon de Racionamiento, Post-Spanish Civil War Falange Ration Stamps
1944 NA Good
The pictorial side of the coupons shows a fighter holding two flags. While printed, one can easily perceive this image as having been painted directly onto the sheet, and this lends excitement to the image. Both sides of the sheet are stained, but not so much as to compromise the image, and we believe as an unused sheet this is a rare survivor.

3 Charming group of hand-made and painted folk art origami figures, including fourteen soldiers, three horses, a flag on a staff, and two incomplete figures (a horse and a soldier)
NA Very Good
N.d., early twentieth century (1910 to early 1930s), based, among other things, on box housing the grouping with stamp of George V, which dates from 1914. (We assume the box housed the grouping from the time it was created, more or less.) The figures are quite precisely painted, and appealingly resemble nutcracker soldiers and what we would imagine would be their toy mounts. Testament to the attention to detail is that the mane on one of the horses is very precisely cut into separate fine strands! The paint colors on the soldiers are bright and eye-catching blues and reds, with some green, yellow and quite realistic flesh colors, while the horses are bay, piebald and chestnut-ish. Most of the soldiers have bayonets or muskets, and they are all postured as if on a ceremonial march. Although origami, the figures are essentially two dimensional, but an example of the care rendered is that they are all painted on both sides. The unfinished figures are a plus to have as well, as they easily reveal the process by which the figures were made. We don't know who made the figures, although their are initials on the two unfinished ones, and we would guess that whoever made them was from the Bristol area of England, based again on the box housing them. Our conjecture was that a young adult made the figures, but certainly it had to be someone with the skill beyond the ability of a pre-teen. The soldiers are generallly 8 cm tall, the horses, the same, and the horses are about 10 cm long at their longest. Some of the firearms are bent, and there is other trivial soiling.

6 Little Soldier Boys ABC
New York McLoughlin Brothers 1900 Wraps Good Plus
Large 4to. 33 by 26 cm, or 13 by 10.25 inches. (Note that this was also issued in a smaller format.) Unpaginated, with 16 pp. when including the pictorial stiff wrap covers, each letter accompanied by a bright chromolithographic illustration. "A" is for Artilleryman, "B" is for Bugler, and onward, til "Z", for Zouave. All the pictures depict children in adult uniform and situations, wherein lies the charm, and at the time this was published served to burnish the romance of all things martial to little boys who then could play-act and dream of one day donning a military uniform for real. The inside covers have two toned illustrations instead of full color. The rear inside cover features "Little Soldiers' Multiplication Table", and this continues in its doggeril verse the rhyming scheme that also runs through the alphabet. Considerable wear, flattened creases, and soiling to the binding, with a closed tear along the fold. Light soiling within.

9 [Advertising Broadside/Brochure] The Battle Cry of Peace "A Call to Arms Against War" The Greatest War Drama Ever Filmed. The Triumph of Preparedness! . . .
Boston Printer: The Libbie Printing Co. 1915 Brochure Very Good
A scarce advertisement for a "photo-drama of war", released in 1915 and now mostly lost. The movie was for its day a huge spectacle, using as it did a cast of thousands, to advance its pro-war message. The plot of the epic was premised on the Central Powers exploited American Pacifists to keep the U.S. from arming itself and then attacking the militarily unprepared and weak U.S. In the movie all kinds of atrocities are then committed against Americans. The movie, directed by J. Stuart Blackton and Wilfrid North, starred Charles Richman, Norma Talmadge, Mary Maurice, and L. Rogers Lytton. 26.5 by 18.5 cm. 4 pp., but with the qualities of a broadside on the front cover or first page as well as the inner two pages in which a dozen scenes of the movie are set forth with still photos and captions. The back cover has quotes from famous Americans, past and present, along with an endorsement of the movie by Theodore Roosevelt, whose assistance was supposedly instrumental in the producer getting assistance from the War Department. Also listed on the last page are the special effects employed in the movie, such as the bombardment of new York, whole buildings toppling, Wall Street in flames, sea battles, and much, much more.

13 Bowyer, Robert An Illustrated Record of Important Events in the Annals of Europe, During the Years 1812, 1813, 1814, & 1815. Comprising a Series of Views of Paris, Moscow, the Kremlin, Dresden, Berlin, the Battles of Leipsic, etc. etc. etc. Together with a History of Those Moentous Transactions.
London T. Bensley, for R. Bowyer 1815 First edition Half Calf. Marbled Boards. Very Good
Folio, 46 by 32 cm. 76 pp. Eighteen hand-colored aquatint plates, four of which are folding. One b/w map plate. Also bound in, in slightly smaller size, are two b/w plates bound in at front, showing in one, portraits of the top figures in France (the royal family, the Bonaparte family, generals and statesmen), and in the other, portraits of the top British personages (and of their allies), with a hand-written key of names of the cameos on the back. Abbey Life 352. The work is complicated bibliographically, with another title used by Bowyer, "The Triumph of Europe", and various plate counts, with most copies coming with fewer than the present volume. While this copy doesn't have the Porto Ferrajo plate, it is still arguably complete. Some scattered light to moderate soiling -- finger smudging mainly. Some flattened paper creases. Still, overall on the clean side, with the pictorial images of the plates bright. Later half-calf binding with light scuffs and a few stain spots but still attractive.

Silhouettes Militaires. De la Révolution et du 1er Empire Collection Bernard-Franck, Brisquet
14 Brisquet Silhouettes Militaires. De la Révolution et du 1er Empire Collection Bernard-Franck
NA Very Good
An magnificent collection of 20 military costume mixed media oil paintings that were once part of a major French collection of militariana. N.d., 1830 to 1860 -- these were nostalgic portraits created during the reigns of Louis Philippe and Louis Napoleon (Napoleon III). Brisquet, the artist, apparently was set-up on the esplanade by les Invalides, certainly a logical place for a creator of military-related bric-a-brac to set up shop, so to speak, and seek to sell his wares. A variety of sizes, ranging in height between 34 and 45 cm, and width, 10 to 29 cm. We have 21 panels in all, with one containing a short textual description of the group. By mixed media, we are referring to the application of cut-outs, made mostly of very thick card, on board, giving the portraits and accessories a dimensionality. Some of these applied pieces are movable -- arms in particular -- or were meant to be so. Largely by dint of these cut-outs, the portraits have a folk art or naive quality. The soldiers are shown carrying firearms, flags, musical instruments, etc. Seldom is the portrait without some other element of interest, and always the background is enriched with a landscape suggestive of a rural battlefield or training ground. The portraits are all by the same artist, Brisquet, and they all are done in the same style. Based on the short explanatory panel, which describes him as a "Tir", which translates as a shooter, we would surmise that he was himself a veteran and possibly a resident himself of les Invalides. Portrayed are the following military figures, rendered in the original French and translated to English if needed: Generale Barthélemy Catherine Joubert, General Eduard Mortier (unlabeled on front), two panels of grenadiers (without further specificity), grenadier hollandais, grenadier de la Vistule (Polish grenadier), tirailleur (sharpshooter), sapeur de dragons, lancier Espagnol, fusilier, inspecteur aux regnes, porte-drapeau (flag bearer), tombour des volontaires (volunteer drummers), eclaireur a cheval jeune garde (young mounted guard and scout -- the portrait doesn't show the guard on horseback though), musicien chapeau Chinois (musician with a Chinese hat), two panels, not identical, of musicien d'Etat-Major, Legion Italique 1800, Flanqueur chasseur and a voltigeur (a member of a skirmish unit created by Napoleon). Each of the paintings is framed by brown strips of thick card, about 1 cm in width. At the base of each picture, excepting one, is a thin label, attached with brad nails, identifying for us who is being portrayed. We can assume that Brisquet made many more of these, and it seems probable that Bernard-Franck himself had many more, based on the numbering on the backs of many of the paintings. Still, we would consider this grouping to be more than ample and not conspicuously lacking in anything. Bernard Franck (1848-1924) was recognized as a leading collector of both militariana and Napoleonic era souvenirs. Born in Paris of a Jewish family, Franck ran a family business that manufactured military equipment. During the Franco-Prussian War he volunteered as a Zuoave. During his lifetime parts of his collection were loaned out for exhibition, starting with the Paris Exposition of 1900, and a part of his collection would be acquired by J.P. Morgan, who contributed it to the Metropolitan Museum. Many of the figurines in his collection are now owned by the Musée de l’Armée which is located in les Invalides. All the panels have rings on their back that can be used for hanging them. The majority of the paintings are darkened and could benefit from a cleaning. This we can discern based on a few that are considerably brighter and thus are obviously closer to their original, intended state of color. Never, though, are featured blurred beyond recognition. A few chips to the applique pieces -- a missing hand, a missing piece to a wood stump, etc. Some of what were meant to be movable pieces no longer function as such. None of these losses materially affect the imagery. Rubbing of the frame pieces here and there. A few cracks to the card material or across the painting. In general, the condition flaws are acceptable and within expectation for decorative antiques -- one could say they add to the character, even.

Das Preussische heer unter Koenig Wilhelm I. 1870/1871., Guentter, A.
18 Guentter, A. Das Preussische heer unter Koenig Wilhelm I. 1870/1871.
1919-1921 Half Morocco. Fine
Manuscript containing 84 original mounted watercolors depicting the Franco-Prussian War. 4to. 29 by 24 cm. 16 leaves with text and painted flags of all the German regiments in the war, followed by the 84 watercolors, each with a title written onto a separate sheet preceding it. At the end, a four page table of contents. While the illustrations are in a sense celebrating the German army and its individual regiments, the paintings are also undeniably beautiful, and in their impressive detail, come off as highly realistic and honest. The artist, about whom nothing is known beyond this body of work, showed meticulous care in rendering uniforms and weaponry, and he was also clearly an accomplished equestrian artist, capturing the horse in its power, motion, attitudes and terror. One would have to think that the author must have had an intent to publish this collection, but there is no evidence that this ever occurred, or that this was indeed an actual aspiration. What one has here, then, is a collection that is as good, and arguably superior, to the several artist's collections that were in fact published in the aftermath of the war.

19 Heidet, S. La vie de garnison a Maubeuge a la veille de la Grande Guerre
Maubeuge (Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France 1900 Hardcover. Chammy spines. Marbled pastedown. Very Good
Two fabulous albums of 81 original watercolors of French military caricature from the turn of the twentieth century. One of the illustrations is dated 1900, and so we assume the balance were done within a few years prior or post, as they are all of a single piece. Both 4o. One, 35.5 by 23 cm, the other, slightly smaller, 31 by 20.5 cm. 46 and 35 watercolors, respectively. The images are all on separate sheets which are mounted by inserting into diagonal corner slots cut out as in many a photo album. These separate sheets are not of a single size, but generally they measure around 25 by 16 cm, and this applies to both albums. The humorous portraits, sometimes accompanies by captions, depict the soldiers stationed at the garrison as well as the assortment of personages who gravitate to the garrison or are part of the fabric of the soldier's garrison life. Many of the portraits are done in full or partial profile, and this is an unifying element. The figures cast shadows, and there is an occasional dog, child, or non-living prop and furnishings to provide a setting; for the most part, though, the focus is entirely on the figure. The cumulative effect is to give a vivid sense of the soldier's life -- the mix of discipline, sport and hedonism -- during peacetime. The gentle rhythms of that life would a little over a decade later be torn apart with the outbreak of the First World War, of course. hese drawings, to our knowledge, were never printed, and we could find no trace of the artist's work elsewhere, although the work is manifestly of publishable quality. The captions can be gentle as well as arch and acerbic in their tone; never, though, could one imagine these men as anything but harmless characters in a period operetta. A few of the watercolors are loose. Some chipping and minor loss to the marbled paper pastedown on the cover.
