1 Chromolithographic Outer Walls of a Go Fishing Game
NA Very Good
N.d., circa 1890. The boards of the four linked walls collapse to lay flat. The object of the game was to attempt to fish out small fish from within the well. None of these fish but one, nor the rods used, are now present, but the outer panels remain highly decorative with their illustration of fish, frogs, a kingfisher, lily pads and shore grasses. The four sides are in fact identical. The sides are oblong, each being 31.5 by 34 cm.

2 Le Livre d'images parlantes pour amuser les chers bebes. Avec des voix caracteristiques d'enfants et d'animaux
Paris K-B (?) Cloth Very Good
The French version of "The Speaking Book", a toy book with sound, that is still in full working order! .N.d., circa late 1890s. 32 by 23.5 cm, and 5.5 cm thick. Title page followed by eight leaves, all on thick card stock, with chromolithographic plate on verso, facing verse describing the animal or people and their typical sound. With nine ivory tassels or pulls with strings attached, which when pulled out from the foreedge or side of the box, produce various sounds: a cock crowling, birds chirping, a donkey bray, a bleat, a moo, a coo, etc. Described by Peter Haining as "The piece de resistance of any collection of movables, or toy-books for that matter". See Haining "Movable Books", New English Library, 1979, p. 136. Also Gumachian 3839, which suggest a possible earlier dating of "vers 1885". The book was produced in Nuremberg by an unknown firm, according to Haining, and as the title page discloses, translated versions were made available in Spanish, English, and as this copy, in French. The German version, though, was published by Theodore Brand Verlag, which issued at least nineteen editions between the 1880s and the 1930s. So while one can not say that the book is rare, to find it in complete working order can be fairly described as rare, or at least, unusual. The sharp chromolithography of the cover and eight other illustrations is all the obvious earmarks of German and specifically Bavarian printing. Gilt edges. Rubbing and wear to the cloth. The front cover is slightly bowed. The card leaves have a slight dip in the middle. Moderate soiling, with ink marks on the final text page. Foreedge with scattered rubbing, or gilt loss.

3 Les Petites Familles
Paris Le Fuel 1820 Hardcover. Cartonnage. Slipcase. Near Fine
Scarce, with a single copy found on OCLC at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. (We believe the BNF has a copy as well.) Anomalous is that this copy is shown as issued in 1819 yet our copy has the calendar for 1821, which suggests strongly an issuance in 1820. Either the OCLC listing is in error, or the same book was issued with eight new pages in its back. 18mo. 11.5 by 7.5 cm. 180, [8] pp. Hand-colored frontis, title page vignette, and ten other hand-colored plates of birds and mammals, all done exquisitely, and in this copy, with exceptional brightness. Indeed, the sharpness of the plates and their level of preservation compares extremely well to other almanacs issued by Le Fuel, Macilly and Janet during this period. The text is a mix of brief scientific exegeses intended for children and non-scientists and sentimental verse. The binding is the original pink silk moire, which is like the plates, very bright and well-preserved. The matching slipcase has some soiling and fading, with fraying along the edges, but it is easily in very good condition for such a thing. Internally, the book is fresh and clean, with only the most occasional light fox marks on the edges.

Panoramic Pictures at the Zoo
4 Panoramic Pictures at the Zoo
New York Sam'l Gabriel Sons & Company Leporello Very Good
N.d., circa 1920s. Oblong leporello with six pop-up cages housing lions, tigers, camels, zebras, deer and bears. Behind the cage bars lie a more naturalistic setting, as opposed to the stone and brick of standard zoo architecture of the era. The front cover depicts a zoo elephant ride, with tots sitting aloft, and the rear board features buffalo. A most charming toy book, which stands easily upright, allowing for the cage pop-ups to be opened to a more three dimensional viewing. The panels are attached by strips of red cloth. On the opposite side from the cage pop-ups are descriptions of various animals and black and white illustrations, and these include other animals such as kangaroos, monkeys and ostriches. Given the construction of the accordian-like book, there is a suggestion of looseness to it, but the panels are firmly attached to one another and the pop-ups, which require a little manual assistance in pulling out, are completely functional and attractive. Two of the red cloth binding strips are replacements.

5 Pretty Farm Pictures. A Big Book for the Little Ones.
London and New York Ernest Nister and E. P. Dutton & Co. First Edition Presumed Boards attached by cloth spine Very Good
N.d., circa 1890. With 19 large chromolithographs, including title, of animals and some children in bucolic settings, all on heavy card which gives the book real heft and durability. The size, 11 by 12 inches each, and prettiness of the illustrations sets this juvenile farm animal compilation from the common fare of the day, and surely the endearing cuteness of the images has led many a time to this book being broken for the purpose of framing the prints. Some soiling of the covers. The red cloth used on the spine has some fraying and weakening. Minor soiling of some margins within, but most of this could be considered age toning. one plate, "Milking Time", ha paper loss in right margin, not affecting or coming close to the image.

The Speaking Picture Book. A Special Book with Picture, Rhyme and Sound for Little People.
6 The Speaking Picture Book. A Special Book with Picture, Rhyme and Sound for Little People.
Cloth Near Fine
N.d., circa 1890s. Sixteenth Edition. 136. (Note Haining has in illustration a copy of 17th Edition and he dates the book circa 1893.) The book was produced in Nuremberg by an unknown firm, according to Haining, and as the title page discloses, translated versions were made available in French, Spanish, and as this copy, in English. The sharp chromolithography of the cover and eight other illustrations is inquestionably German and Bavarian. With 22 pp of text, including text on FEP (but not counting cover.) Measures 12.25 x 9.25 x 2.5 inches, or 32 x 24 x 6.5 cm. A minor closed tear along lower hinge of several leaves. Age toning to pages, with some light finger soiling in margins. Light wear of gilt on foreedges. Light rubbing along cloth of spine edge. Not all the sounds are so easily distinguishable, as was probably always the case, but they are all here. Seldom found in completely working order as is this example.

Esslingen bei Stuttgart J. F. Schreiber Paper pastedowns on boards Fair
N.d., circa 1880s. Oblong, 11.5 by 8.75 inches, 29 by 22 cm. With eight delightful bright chromolithographs depicting horses, chickens, cats, storks, dogs, ducks, cows and pigeons, with parrots on the front board. Most facing pages feature verse, in German, along with line drawings of animals and children interacting with them. Scarce juvenile title, with only copy found on Worldcat a mid-20th century probable reprint, and not in Wegehaupt, Alte deutsche Kinderbuecher. The leaves are of a heavy card -- they are in essence all boards. Disbound, with later tabs not holding, and otiose rebacking. Some soiling of margins and also the paper pastedown front and rear boards. The upper right corner is a little chewed on a few of the boards, not coming close to the images, and there are a few additional minor chips along the edges. Basically, a collection of great plates, but also no loss to the original book's content.

Album of Original Watercolored Drawings of Birds, Mammals and Insects Drawn from the Museum at Manchester, England, Atkinson, F.
8 Atkinson, F. Album of Original Watercolored Drawings of Birds, Mammals and Insects Drawn from the Museum at Manchester, England
Full Blindstamped Morocco Very Good
N.d., circa 1870s, based on style of album (which is that of an earlier decade) and when the collection would have been accessible. 8vo. 24 by 19 cm. 48 pages of watercolors, plus three pages of a table listing the species represented and their locations. Blank leaves are scattered throughout the album, as the norm with an artist's album; the album still reads as filled up. Depicted are 55 species, mostly one per painting but a few paintings with two or three. The artistic style, and perhaps also proficiency, is not entirely consistent. Some of the paintings are decidedly naive, while others are quite polished, and a goodly number can be characterized as a combination. The mammals tend to be shown in a natural setting -- it would seem that Atkinson was probably painting what was in a diorama -- while at the other extreme are the insects, which are shown unadorned by anything but their own bodies, and here he was probably working of a specimen kept under glass. Regardless of the artist's choices and/or limitations, there is an unstinting fidelity to the subject matter, and not a single image is lacking in a winsome charm. Interspersed are a few non-zoological paintings such as one might find in a commonplace book -- a vase, a castle, a Buddhist temple or pavilion -- but these don't negate the essential thematic unity of the album. The museum that Atkinson relied upon for his inspiration was surely the Manchester Museum, which is part of the University of Manchester, and boasts a substantial collection of natural history. Most of the drawings are done directly onto the album's leaves, with just a few on mounted sheets. The artist signed many of the paintings either "F. Atkinson" or "FA". Beyond his identity, nothing has been discovered about who he was. Moderate to heavy wear to the binding. Hinge repaired.

Nurnberg Gabriel Nicolaus Raspe 1786 First Edition Cloth over Marbled Boards Very Good Plus
4to. xxvi, 194 pp. With 20 hand-colored plates. The text pages have a light ink-blot-like foxing in many of the leaves where the text is. Most will not find this disconcerting, as since it seldom shows up in the margins, it is surely the result of a chemical reaction involving the paper composition and the ink over an extended period of time. In other words, it is to be found probably in virtually all extant copies. The plates are not only spared this, but they are immaculate, their coloring breathtaking.

10 Curtis, John British Entomology; (Four Volumes) Being Illustrations and Descriptions of the Genera of Insects Found in Great Britain and Ireland; Containing Coloured Figures from Nature of the Most Rare and Beautiful Species, and in Many Instances of the Plants Upon which They are Found
London Printed for the author and sold by Sherwood, Jones and Co.;FW. Wetton; etc. 1824-7 First Edition Half Calf Very Good
8vo. 24 by 15.5 cm. 194 hand-colored plates. The plates are sensitively and sublimely realized and impart something visually that no photograph of the many insect species represented here could ever achieve. Hand-written two page exigesis on preserving specimens on two preliminary blanks of first volume, along with an insert piece of scrap paper with two sketches of insects -- we would consider these accretions a plus. Calf on spines with cracking, rubbing and wear, with a loss of one spine label, and the gilt detailing on one compartment of one volume is now lost with plain calf repair. All the volumes have had joint repairs, and on the first volume, one can see shadow remnants of tape which clearly was once used to hold boards. Notwithstanding these issues, the contemporary bindings remain handsome and should please most sensibilities. All text blocks are tight, and the interiors are generally clean, with only the most occasional light soiling.

Le Buffon des Petits Enfants Premieres Connaissances, Aussi Amusantes que Curieuses Pour Apprendre l'Histoire Naturelle, Delattre, Charles
11 Delattre, Charles Le Buffon des Petits Enfants Premieres Connaissances, Aussi Amusantes que Curieuses Pour Apprendre l'Histoire Naturelle
Paris Bibliotheque d'Education de Desiree Eymery 1841 First Edition Presumed Good
Scarce, with no copies of this edition on OCLC FirstSearch, and the earliest copy on OCLC being four years later, with fewer plates and the plates apparently not hand-colored. 12mo. 14 by 9 cm. 169 pp. 12 hand-colored plates, including frontis genre scene at the Jardins des Plants. Text is presented in a dialogue format between a father and son. Besides the scarcity of this juvenile zoological plate book, it is unusual to find a color printed pastedown on the cover of a book of this vintage. Moderately to heavily soiled cover, with the pastedown imagery heavily rubbed -- the imagery is still generally discernible, but it is a show of what it was. A few small closed marginal tears of the pages, and a moderate amouht of foxing to a few early and last leaves.

12 Fritz Baumgarten (1883-1966) Unsere Haustiere Ein Tier-Bilderbuch. No. 7204
Heavy Card Boards Very Good Plus
Five leaves of thick card, including the covers, and with eight pages of color illustrations of domestic animals, two per page, plus the illustration on the cover. Scarce. A few copies turn up on OCLC, but these are all later editions except possibly one, which is dated 1936. This copy is undated, given the use of Suetterlin Schrift on the front cover, a type of cursive pushed in German schools between 1935 and 1941, when it became officially banned, this is almost certainly the same edition, although the appearance of the book otherwise would suggest a slightly earlier issue. While the Suetterlin Schrift is now indecipherable to people not brought up with it, the Gothic Fraktur type used in the body of the work is much more accessible as well as ornamental. Age toning more pronounced on the edges. Otherwise clean and tight. The card is sturdy as can be. The spine band has some wear at the extremities.

15 Jules Renard. Illustrations by Pierre Bonnard Histoire Naturelles
Paris Ernest Flammarion. Imprimerie Hemmerle, Petit et Cie. Half Morocco over Boards with Decorated Paper Past Very Good
N.d., circa 1910. 12mo. 346 pp. Although Renard's work inspired a number of famous artists, Bonnard's simple, deliberately naive-styled line drawings perfectly match the highly economic whimsy of the prose. Original wraps are bound in. The binding is particularly lovely, with half green morocco and boards covered with a modernist abstract design. Minor rubbing along the joints. The pages are age toned. Overall, a tight and clean copy.

12mo. (5" x 3.5", 13 by 9 cm.) With 62 hand-colored plates. Gumuchian 3551. Almost identical to the first edition of this work issued three years earlier except for addition in this edition of four wood engraved half titles. In any case, scarce to find an early children's Buffon such as this with the full complement of plates, not to mention with color. The first two volumes have a very light dampstain, nearly inconspicuous. Otherwise, light occasional foxing but generally clean. The contemporary calf spine head of volume 1 has chip and slight chewing. Elsewhere the leather has scuffs and light rubbing, but still attractive. The marbled paper slipcase is solid and attractive.

17 Lisle, Leconte de. Illustrations by Odette Denis Les Poemes Barbares Vingt-six eaux-fortes originales dessinees et gravees par Odette Denis
Paris Le Livre de Plantin 1948 Limited Edition Full Calf Near Fine
This is No. IX of 15 copies produced "hors commerce" intended for the collaborators on the project and of a total limitation of 205 copies. The leaves in this copy are of a heavy card. 4to. 32 by 25 cm. Unpaginated. 42 leaves, with full page plates blank on versos and other leaves, including ones with illustrations, printed on both sides. The animal illustrations are very much of the best "Animalier" tradition, as in Bayre, Bonheur and the like, with a fine attention to detail without fussiness and a freedom of hand that captures compelling a sense of movement. The illustrations complement and augment perfectly the already classic verses about wild animals of de Lisle. Scarce, with the only copy located on OCLC FirstSearch in the Bibliotheque Nationale. One early page with heavy foxing on its bottom half; otherwise, mostly clean, even pristine, with light wear to the full calf binding.

20 Prang, Louis American Card Album
Boston L. Prang & Co. 1864 First Edition Cloth Very Good
A splendid, comprehensive collection of Prang's hard-to-find botanical and zoological chromolithographic cards issued in 1864. Folio, 35.5 by 30.5 cm. 35 leaves, with the first being a title leaf, followed by 34 leaves each containing slots for a dozen chromolithographic cards, all but four of which are filled, for a total of 404 pictorial cards, plus an additional 34 title cards on the backs of each of these leaves, or a grand total of 438 Prang cards. Cards from Prang card series pertaining to natural history, including 95 (of 96) from Wild Flowers, 36 from Sea Mosses, 72 from Butterflies and Moths, 24 from Wood Mosses, 60 from Autumn Leaves, 22 (of 24) from Flowers, 24 from Fruit Blossoms, 12 from Roses, 71 (of 72) from American Birds. At this time Prang had a few other series unrelated to natural history. This collection, though, but for the insignificant number of missing cards, is comprehensive of the nature-related series. The individual cards are all strikingly beautiful, with strong color that remains undiminished, their fidelity to the subject, and their simplicity, but together, we find that the totality is even greater than the sum of the parts, as well as presenting a full record of this area of Prang's printing activity. We believe, given the general scarcity of these albums, that this one was primarily intended as a salesman sample catalogue, but this particular copy was given to M. L. Smith as a New Year's present by her husband on January 1, 1865, as is written on the front board on a leather centerpiece label. We believe that the husband was Walter Smith, an educator who was a close collaborator of Prang, and this is certainly consistent with the pedagogical purpose of the cards, which were meant to disseminate greater knowledge of plants, birds and butterflies. The cards are age toned, and many have some light, occasionally moderate, soiling, besides -- sometimes fox marks, sometimes other stains. The card stock used for the leaves is now britle, with some minor edge chips a result. Rebacked, with appropriate brown calf that blends well with cloth boards. Raised bands on spine. Cloth of boards with some soiling, wear, and a few blister spots. Newer endpapers.
