Prison Rhymes. Composed in Military Guard Rooms and Prison Cells., Stewart, Robert
5 Stewart, Robert Prison Rhymes. Composed in Military Guard Rooms and Prison Cells.
Perth, Scotland National Prohibition and Reform Party. Printed by Thomas Hunter & Sons, Limited 1919 First edition Brochure. Wraps. Very Good
Anti-war poetry from the First World War. Stewart, the author, was arrested in 1916, probably for having been a conscientious objector. As a Socialist Radical, he may also have been engaged in other anti-government activities that got him into trouble with the law. The poetry he produced in prison is often fluent, even musical and lilting, very much in the tradition of Burns, who clearly was an influence, with one of the poems an explicit re-working of "A Man's a Man for a' That". 8vo. 18.5 by 12.5 cm. 31, [1] pp. Scarce, with only copies found at the British Library and the National Libary of Scotland, based on an OCLC FIrst Search (and a microfilm copy in Gottingen). Soiling on the cover, slight griminess to a few leaves, and age toning generally.

6 Young, Daniel K. A Lesson from the Chicken Coop. How One Smart Chicken Squeezed All the Other Chickens Out of the Yard, Just as the Rockefellers, the Morgans and the Carnegies Push the Farmer and Industrial Worker off the Earth
Everett, Washington Socialist Party of Washington NA Fine
Scarce, with no copies on OCLC. N.d., circa 1915. Single folded sheet, four pages, each 23 by 15 cm. A parable in which a conniving rooster is able to trick the rest of the flock to give up their ownership of land and pay him half of their harvest of worms. Through the parable is explained the structure of the American capitalist system as perceived from the point of view of radical Socialists, with such phenomena as free trade, plutocratic charity, open door immigration, etc. cast as the conspiratorial workings of the upper classes. Ironically, some of the arguments here posited from the Far Left of the early twentieth century are echoed by Trump and his base today. Regardless of whether one is in line with the political agenda promoted in this leaflet, though, the narrative has a winsome charm, and one has to be impressed with the author's storytelling. Of course, one can't read this without thinking of Orwell's "Animal Farm", even though the political perspective is vastly different.
