2 [Victorian Dance Card] Sixth Annual Ball of the Electric Club, at Harmonie Rooms, 139 145 Essex Street, On Thanksgiving Eve, Nov. 28th, 1877. Music By Boswald.
1877 Near Fine
This dance card is notable for two reasons that have little to do with the design of the card per se -- namely, as a very early celebration of electricity -- it precedes the creation of the Edison Company by a year, and yet it is the Sixth Annual Ball, and further, it predates by eight years the known incorporation of the Electric Club; and as probably an early relic from the Jewish immigrant community that was to cram the Lower East Side in the years following. The card is also a handsome specimen of paper Victoriana, with its shaped textured paper with cartonnage relief work and its chromo oval cameos on both its front and back. The card, which is 10.5 by 7 cm and bound by a string, with a tassel attached, has four pages of content within, with the obligatory list of dances and the names of the men in charge of the event and/or active in the Club. Light soiling to the cover.

[Manuscript] Extrait du Livre des Juifs, Guérin, Mlle.
4 Guérin, Mlle. [Manuscript] Extrait du Livre des Juifs
1738 Full Calf Very Good
4to. 24.5 by 18.5 cm. 316 pp. 17 lines of handwriting per page generally. Relating pieces of Jewish "history" from the Creation to Simon and the Maccabees. Fluidly, concisely written, with necessarily many conflations and reductions while maintaining a narrative momentum. Some of the interest in the manuscript lies in its vernacular recapitulation of Biblical stories, and also of Flavius Josephus, and its evidence of strong religious proclivities and attitudes even as the Enlightenment was surging all around. At the end of the manuscript are appended two apocryphal documents relating to Jesus. The first (in three pages),'Tresor admirable. de la sentence de condamnation prononcee contre [notre] Seigneur Jesus christ,' our manuscript tells us, was discovered in a house in Aquila in the Kingdom of Naples in 1548 and purports to be the sentence of condemnation against Jesus. [A text of this is found in Fabricius' Codex Apocrapha, Novi Testamenti III, 489 fol. and a translation is found in Ward's Ancient Lowly]. There were editions of this apocryphal document published in 1581, 1621, and in 1839. It has received some notice along with a shorter version, also 'found' in Aquila in 1820. There are numerous divergences about the discovery of this document, when it was discovered, what it was written on, etc. But it seems obvious it is a forgery. The second addition is a letter supposedly by Petrus [Publius] Lentulus proconsul in Jerusalem and is also three pages. The letter of Lentulus first appeared in print in 1474 in an edition of Ludolph the Carthusian. It is thought to be of Greek origin and was translated into Latin in the thirteenth or fourteenth centuries. It is our sense that this manuscript was intended for publication but never was. The writer's hand is exceptionally neat and so even without calligraphy per se or other decorative frills, this is a beautiful manuscript. We do not have any information on Mlle. Guerin, although we would note that there was a well-known courtesan, author and hostess of a literary salon in Paris at the time by the name of Claudine Alexandrine Guérin de Tencin (1682 - 1749). Condition: joints rubbed. Spine has some dryness, and chips by extremities. Other leather abrasions. Still, a handsome contemporary French full calf binding with raised bands, and gilt decoration in spine compartments.

Alef-Bet, Kipniss, Levin. Illustrated by Zeev Raban
8 Kipniss, Levin. Illustrated by Zeev Raban Alef-Bet
Berlin Verlag "Lasefer" S. D. Saltzmann. Printed by Richard Labisch & Co. 1923 First edition Hardcover Good
8vo. 25 cm. 30 unnumbered pages, 27 of which have a chromolithographic, "illuminated" illustration of the Hebrew letter, and an object or thing which begins with that letter, as typical of ABC books, other than this one is using the Hebrew alphabet. The coloring, especially the profuse use of gold set against a gray slate backdrop, is riveting, and together with the general feel and style of the illustrations, relates easily to the Jugendstil book illustrations so prevalent in Germanic children's books of the period. Raban was a teacher of the Bezalel School of Art. The book is uncommon in its original edition, which this is. Moderate to arguably heavy wear and soiling.

Scarce exegesis, with only two copies located on OCLC, one in Italy, the other, the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. 8vo. 21 by 14 cm. 132 pp. An attempt to rescue Jewish moral philosophy from the prevalent misunderstanding of it, Levi's preface states in essence. Following comes a concise synopsis of the Talmud. The intended audience might have included non-Jews, it seems to us, although thus is not so stated. Rubbing of leather. Wear and small chips to paper pastedown on the boards. Occasional foxing.
