Chief Paints. Color Styles and Painting Guide for Beautifying and Protecting Your Home
3 Chief Paints. Color Styles and Painting Guide for Beautifying and Protecting Your Home
Full Leather. Spiral Spine. Very Good
N.d., circa late 1940s. Folio, 43 by 33 cm. 59 pp. Missing only one paint strip, of 215. Many color illustrations of house exteriors and interiors, working in the activities of the wholesome American nuclear family ideal of the period, with attractive young parents and their small children. Homes are generally modest but handsome suburban clapboard colonials, with modern, southern plantation and ranch houses also shown. The illustrations are uniformly pleasing, and their interest lies in their sociological content as well. The catalogue is chock-full of explanatory material on all the paint and stain products of the company, along with many do-it-yourself instructions and tips, and so it was really much more than a simple catalogue or color guide. Wear and soiling to the cover. Light wear to pages, which are generally clean.

11 Planning Your Individual Home
Chicago (?) National Plan Service, Inc. 1950 Leatherette. Spiral. Very Good
Elephantine folio. 52.5 by 40 cm. 96 pp. Innumerable big splashy colorful illustrations of new home designs, with accompanying floor plans and illustrations of interior features as well. The designs are ones that were pitched primarily to developers, who typically built such houses on spec, often as part of a development, large or small. Many of the houses are now very recognizable and can be found in thousands of suburban communities throughout the U.S. Whatever one's opinion of the vernacular domestic architecture of the day, however, few would dispute that never do the actual examples built of these houses look as great as they do in the fantasy spun by this folio. Internally clean and bright. Front cover reattached to spiral with small discreet strips of cloth. Corner chips to the leatherette cover.

Your new home and your pocketbook
15 Your new home and your pocketbook
Bridgeport, CT General Electric Home Bureau First Edition Brochure. Wraps. Near Fine
N.d., circa 1944. 4to. (To be read oblong, with binding on top.) 27.5 by 21.5 cm. 32 pp. plus wraps. Selling the American dream of suburban living on credit, with a splashy presentation of the practicalities and costs of setting up an imaginary modest but comfortable house. The booklet cleverly uses a cut-out window to show the expenses, total and monthly, with a comparison of conventional financing and through G.E., with big surprise, G.E. credit cheaper every time. As one turns the leaves, another line of the ledger is revealed until the whole spreadsheet is revealed on page 31, with heating, electrical, cabinetry, kitchen appliances, etc. requiring a monthly outlay of a whopping $61.05 with conventional financing versus only $58.42 through G.E. Throughout are color cartoonish illustrations of the happy housewife, and the text is full of plenty of useful tips to inexperienced newlyweds facing their first big investment.

The History of the Colleges of Winchester, Eton, and Westminster; with the Charter-House, the School of St. Paul’s, Merchant Taylors, Harrow, and Rugby, and the Free-School of Christ’s Hospital, Ackermann, Rudolph
18 Ackermann, Rudolph The History of the Colleges of Winchester, Eton, and Westminster; with the Charter-House, the School of St. Paul’s, Merchant Taylors, Harrow, and Rugby, and the Free-School of Christ’s Hospital
London R. Ackermann 1816 First Edition Full Calf Very Good
Folio-sized. 34.5 by 28 cm. 48 hand-colored plates, 44 of which are views, four, costume. Pagination is separate for each of the schools: vi (including list of subscribers), 56, 72, 40, 32, 43, 34, 34, 27, 22, [1] pp. The greatest number of plates are devoted to Eton and Winchester, which get ten each, with the other schools genreally receiving five each. The plates capture the architectural glory of these institutions, as well as the romance that had already gathered around them, with nary an acknowledgment of the underside of their strict and spartan regime. Scattered foxing, heavy at times, but most leaves and plates are in fact clean. Sometimes heavy offsetting from the plates onto the facing pages. Full contemporary calf with gothic architectural motive and border decoration blindstamped. Rebacking, with original spine preserved and laid on. Some small chips and scuffs to the leather. Notwithstanding its wear, it remains decidedly handsome.

19 Charles Letrosne. Murs et Toits Pour Les Pays de Chez-Nous (Three Folios or Volumes)
Paris Chez Dan 1923, 1924, 1926 First Edition
Three oblong volumes full of architectural plans, line sketchings of the elevations of those plans, and color plates with more elaborate realizations of some of the structures in their settings. Covered are all kinds of public buildings throughout France -- city or town halls, schools, courts, theaters, festival halls, train stations, post offices, hotels, hospitals, factories -- as well as farm houses, barns, houses. Many of the designs are picturesque and easy on the eye. Accompanying each design is a textual description and explanation, often placing it in its local context, and fitting into the surroundings is a virtue strenuously advocated by the work. Overall this is an ambitious work that surely was intended for a wider audience than the profession, and it is something one can easily enjoy as a coffee table book in the best sense. Spine cloth has been repaired on two volumes. Some general wear to the boards, and the marbling, already dark, may have darkened on the paper pastedowns, and the gilt, bright on one of the volumes, is dulled on the other two. In one volume the leaves, held together by cord, are loose on the front side because of typical tears between the holes for the string and the edges. Each volume measures 39 by 29 cm, or 15.5 by 11.5 inches.

20 de Rupé, G., architect and artist. Heliographs by B. Rôze & Cie. H. Fléchelle Album de Bois Découpés 1875 2e Partie. Kiosques.
Paris Imprimerie Jules Boyer 1875 Hardcover. Paper pastedown. Cloth spine Very Good Plus
Scarce album of designs for kiosks, chalets and small villas -- lovely pleasure pavilions and follies, many can be. No copies whatsoever found on OCLC or elsewhere. Folio, 35 by 27 cm. Secondary title page (front cover serves as the primary title page), followed by 30 plates, each with a single design. Each plate is dominated by an elevation of the design, below which is a ruled scale and a simple architectural design outline -- as most of these are single room, this amounts to a geometric shape and little more in those instances. Quite extraordinary architectural "trade catalogue" -- besides being scarce in itself, it is a type of catalogue that was also uncommon at the date of its issue. Light wear.
