Album of Taste and Fashion and Book of Commercial & General Information Golden Guide to London London George Hennelle 1877 Decorated Blindstamped Cloth Very Good Folio-sized, 40 by 31 cm. 73 leaves are numbered (not pages), followed by an almost equal number not accordingly numbered. This is the antithesis of a pocket tourist guide, and not just in size. While the part that is not overtly paid-for advertisements is full of useful information, the size and heft of the book meant that it was more likely to be a courtesy reference one might have found at hotels or on ships, or perhaps as a souvenir for the visitor. The reference part has all the expected useful information -- hotels, restaurants, transportation info, sights, museums, neighborhood descriptions, and many text illustrations -- but it is the often splashy ads that probably stood out then, and stand out now. These form the greater part of devoted to "Fine Arts", "Shipping Intelligence", "Champagne and Cognac", and "Plans of London Theatres". In the first of these, there are numerous full page ads for photography studios, often with a specimen of their work. The champagne section is full of mounted color printed labels. The last section has pictorial diagrams of many theatres still standing today. There are plenty of other flamboyant ads in the first part of the book for almost anything conceivable, from clothes to pool tables to lawn mowers, sometimes with mounted chromolithographic illustrations. Wear to the red decorative cloth. Repair to the front joint. Clean within.

Hotel Metropole Northumberland Avenue London A Souvenir London Chiswick Press 1889 First Edition Presumed Wraps Very Good An excursion to a bygone pampered stay in London. 8vo. 84 pp. The deluxe Hotel Metropole opened in 1885. Located between Trafalgar Square and Westminster Palace (Parliament), it was requisitioned by the British government during both World Wars, and the buidling was converted permanently to government offices after the Second World War. The government sold the building back into private hands in 2007, and after a restoration, it has re-opened as a five star Hotel Corinthia. The "souvenir" brochure has a wide mix of information about both the hotel and the surrounding city, and it was intended both as a repository of practical information for the guest and tourist while staying at the hotel as well as a keepsake after the guest bid his farewell. Thus there is the kind of information that today we will find contained in a binder sitting atop a guest room desk, with a general description of the hotel's appointments and services, an overview of the sights of London, a list of recommended retailers and service providers, and then 38 pages of advertisements, which should be interesting to many of us even today for various reasons. One of the most interesting "morsel" in the whole brochure are the pages relating to dining. Presented are the menus for three meals each day, along with comments there and elsewhere about timing, which are quite different from custom today, and then there are quite a few food and drink related ads. Of the many curious ads, one example is for "English and American Painless Dentistry". Another to be singled out is for Aspinall's Neigeline, a skin product, with a testimonial -- one which would seem pale in our jaded times -- from Adelina Patti, who was then about as big a celebrity as one could be. The wraps have wear, with some loss of the paper on the spine. A faint dampstain on the front, and a shadow of a card on the back, with light soiling besides.

The Home of the Motor Cab. The General Motor Cab Company Ltd. 1909 London 1909 Hardcover. Cloth Good Scarce, with no copies located on OCLC First Search. Oblong 4to. 24 by 29 cm. 56, [2] pp. Fourteen of the pages are bright color plates generally depicting the smart set riding in beautiful vehicles, but also an illustration of the company's expansive headquarters and garage located in Kennington, a neighborhood in South London next to Vauxhall. The text presents both matter-of-fact info about the company's taxi services -- charges, policies, etc. -- but also some lighter breezer fare on such topics as a trip to the Channel or Coventry. Red cloth cover heavily soiled. Endpapers, title and final leaf grubby. Otherwise, lower band of leaves with hint of waviness that might come from a passing exposure to moisture, and perhaps a touch of soiling here and there. A few other finger smudges, minor closed tears and light wear besides. Notwithstanding these issues, a very handsome sales promotion for a cab company that was not just selling itself but also the notion of the horseless carriage as a luxury alternative to the horse drawn vehicle not yet fully vanquished in metropolitan use.

Crane, Thomas and Ellen Houghton. Illustrated by J. G. Sowerby and Thomas Crane London Town London Marcus Ward & Co. 1883 First Edition Hardcover. Paper pastedown. Very Good 8vo. 56 pp. Delightful color plates and text illustrations of the amusements and sights found in London. The "Queen Anne"-aesthetic of the illustrations, decoration and overall book production are in the vein of Kate Greenaway and/or Walter Crane, both of whom were obvious influences. This affectionate juvenile "Baedeker" of London very effectively enables the adult vicariously to experience the many wondrous aspects of city through a child's eyes. Light wear to the cover. Light foxing to the early and late leaves, and occasionally elsewhere, but overall, a clean and bright copy that is very good or better.
