Illustrated Plate Honoring Henry Garnet, Convicted and Executed for Complicity in the Gunpowder Plot, with Original Ink Vignettes and Mounted Cameo Portrait of Garnet
1 Illustrated Plate Honoring Henry Garnet, Convicted and Executed for Complicity in the Gunpowder Plot, with Original Ink Vignettes and Mounted Cameo Portrait of Garnet
Fine
N.d., nineteenth century. The miniature vignettes in the margins are very finely rendered, with images of the Tower of London and three other buildings, Garnet hanging in a public square, a group of pigrims, and four skulls and crossbones. The Gunpowder Plot was a Catholic Jesuit conspiracy to assassinate James I in 1605. Although Garnet, a Jesuit priest opposed to violent action, had sought to foil the plot, he felt obliged not to divulge its existence to civil authorities when it was revealed to him in a confessional, and as someone for decades held in suspicion by the government, he was part of the round-up of conspirators and then tried on trumped up charges, leading to his conviction and execution in 1606. This card or plate, measuring 22 by 15 cm, is both unusual and of exceptional beauty.

New Gleanings from Gladstone Illustrated
2 New Gleanings from Gladstone Illustrated
Edinburgh and London William Blackwood & Sons Wraps Very Good
A contemporary anthology of caricatures inspired by William Gladstone, who surely was every caricaturist's dream come true. Unpaginated, 30 pp., not including wraps. N.d., circa 1880. With caricature on verso, and poetic caption below, almost always a quote from Shakespeare, and the facing page usually including a longer poetic passage or two from Shakespeare as well as other important English poets (and an occasional quote, not in verse, from Disraeli, or a nursery rhyme). The whole makes for an excellent, if jaundiced, survey of Gladstone's career at the helm, as well as celebrating the caricaturist's art. Tiny corner chip on front wrap. Clean within.

4 Davanzati Bostichi, Bernardo (1529 - 1606) Scisma D'Inghilterra, Con altre Operette del Signor Bernardo Davanzati Bostichi, Gentiluomo Fiorentino; Tratte dall'Edizion Fiorentina del MDCXXXVIII
Padova Presso Giuseppe Comino 1727 Vellum Very Good
8vo. [8], 256 pp. With engraved frontis portrait of Davanzati, and a folding diagram regarding currency exchanges. The principal work herein gives an account of the English Reformation, or Henry VIII's break with Rome, through his daughter's, Mary's reign. The other works contained herein, though, may in fact represent more important pieces from a historical perspective. The first two of these are "Notizia de Cambi" and "Lezione delle monete", which are early discourses on economic topics and the former, on the working of exchange rates. Also of special interest would be "Coltivazione Toscana delle Viti, e d'alcuni Arbori". which deals with the viticulture. The other works are "Orazione in Morte del Gran Duca Cosimo I", a tribute to Cosimo Medici, and "Accus data dal Silente al Travagliato". The variety of essays in the collection capture the range of Davanzati's interests as a prototypical Renaissance man. Contemporary thin, limp vellum. Light wear, and a few marginal stains.

Heraldry Manuscript, Logie, Edward (?)
11 Logie, Edward (?) Heraldry Manuscript
Wraps. Marbled paper on card. Very Good
N.d., circa 1852. Oblong 4to. 26 by 37 cm. Ten leaves, or 18 pp., with thirty different watercolors of armorial banners. The images are extraordinarily bright and beautiful; these paintings were by an accomplished, confident hand. The imagery is of three basic types: squarish banners held up by stylized animals, long triangular-ish armorial pennants, and armorial rectangular paintings that are not shown as part of a flag or banner. The presentation is chronological based on monarchs, beginning with Edward III and running to Henry VIII and his wives, Anne and Jane. The name of the particular monarch associated with an image is written in ink with a neat hand. The dating is based on a watermark, and the artist, on a pencil inscription.
