1 Des Koniglich Baierisch Militarisch Hohen St. Georgii Ritter Ordens Wappen Calender
Munchen Fleischmann 1817 Vellum Very Good
16mo. With 119 Engraved Plates, one folding, of portraits, coat-of-arms, and sometimes ornate decoration and imagery beside. A mix of line and stipple engravings. This is a collection of the escutcheons of German princes. Followed by almanac and calendar. The almanac part has death notices, not recent at time, that might have been included as a fee by noble families wishing to honor their forbears. The principle part of the almanac is a historic table with dates of ascession (coronation) and death of princes during mostly the eighteenth century. The binding is of added interest, being a red vellum. The binding has considerable wear, especially along the edges, and spine labels are chipped. Tight and mostly clean within, with FFEP partly loose. Two bookplates, both attractive, of Dudrea and Sumner Parker, who had a museum in Lutherville, Maryland in their home called "The Cloisters" which was bequeathed by them to the City of Baltimore.

Rhein-Panorama von Mainz-Cöln
4 Rhein-Panorama von Mainz-Cöln
Mainz Leitermann & Jäger Blindstamped, gilt-stamped, cloth Very Good
N.d., circa 1890. Closed, oblong, 13 by 23.5 cm. Chromolithographic map and views of river constituting a 22 panel leporello. When fully stretched open, this leporello, or panorama, measures 264 by 23 cm. Together with a booklet with explanatory text (Erläuternder Text) rendered in English and French as well as German. This booklet is 31 pages. The color palette of the panorama is somewhat austere, with dull greens and browns dominating, and touches of red here and there. It is very much in the dark Romantic, Wagnerian Ring aesthetic. There are a total of 58 inset views, including the two larger views, one of Cologne, the other, of Mainz, at each end. The panorama would have been sold as a souvenir to tourists who typically were doing a Rhine cruise. Light wear.

5 ULK Wochenschrift der Berliner Volks-Zeitung. [Or: Wochenbeilage zur Berliner Volkszeitung]
Berlin Druck und Verlag von Rudolf Mosse 1921 First Edition Cloth Very Good
The entire 1921 year run of this left-leaning humor weekly, or 51 issues, bound in cloth. The supplement to the Volkszeitung or Tageblatt was issued from 1872 to 1933, when the Jewish owned publication was terminated. 4to, 30.5 by 22.5 cm. Each issue is four pages, with generally one color (red, green, blue, etc.), occasionally two colors, enriching the black and white illustrations on the front and rear of each issue. The cover features one large illustration, with the back sometimes a single large illustration, sometimes several cells of a cartoon. Plenty of caricatures, cartoons and humorous drawings within as well. The publication was printed on highly acidic newspaper stock and so the pages are heavily toned. Otherwise clean. Soiling to the cloth cover, which remains attractive nonetheless.

[Leporello] [German Political and Military Leaders] Wir wollen sein ein einig Volk. Uns trennen in keiner Noth noch Gefahr. Gut und Blut. Herz und Hand. Alles fur das Vaterland
6 [Leporello] [German Political and Military Leaders] Wir wollen sein ein einig Volk. Uns trennen in keiner Noth noch Gefahr. Gut und Blut. Herz und Hand. Alles fur das Vaterland
Frankfurt Ph. Frey & Co. Leporello Good
N.d., circa 1871. This near-miniature leporello (8 by 6 cm when closed), which features 26 cameo portraits of Prussian and German rulers and generals, was almost certainly issued as a commemoration and celebration following the Franco-Prussian War and the formal creation of an unified Germany. Most of the cameos, in fact, are of generals who served in that war or the earlier Austro-Prussian War. In any case, we can infer that the leporello dates to before 1873 because Kronprinz Albert von Sachsen ascended to the Saxon throne in 1873. Other cameos are of Wilhelm I, Kronprinz Frederick of Prussia, Prinz Carl of Prussia, Prinz August von Wurttemberg, Bismarck, Kriegsminister von Roon, General von Moltke, General von Voigts-Rhetz, General von Alvensleben II, Gen. von Krchbach, Gen. von Fransecki, Gen. von Azstrow, Gen. v. Manstein, Gen. Vogel von Falkenstein, Gen. von Steinmetz, Gen. von Goeben, etc. At least two of the folds of the diminuitive leporello have been repaired. Two of the cameos have rubbing on the card suface which partially lifts away some of the name captions. Minor chips to the paper pastedown on the front and rear, and in genreal there is age toning and wear from use, with the pull-out appearing not quite tightly suspended from the binder. Still, a scarce item, with no copies coming up in an OCLC search, nor online otherwise.

7 Clara E. Laughlin. Photography by Gordon Coster The Black Forest Village The Land of "Once Upon a Time"
Chicago Runkle Thompson Kovats Inc. 1934 First Edition Wraps Near Fine
4to, 10.5 by 8 inches, 27 by 20 cm. 24 pp., plus wraps. Issued as a souvenir at the Chicago 1934 World's Fair in conjunction with the German pavilion where a quintessential idealized Black Forest or Schwarzwald Village was created. Today this Teutonic idyll lives on in such settings as Frankenmuth, Michigan. In 1934 this was a bit of innocent fun that belied the stirrings that had already erupted in Germany.

Kampf und Sieg, Junge! Das Sportbuch des Deutschen Jungen, Fuhry, Ernst
8 Fuhry, Ernst Kampf und Sieg, Junge! Das Sportbuch des Deutschen Jungen
Berlin Verlag Deutscher Fussball-Bund Cloth Very Good
N.d., circa 1937. 8vo. 23.5 by 15.5 cm. Unpaginated. Dramatically filtered photos -- think Leni Refinstahl -- of Hitler youth in all kinds of sporting activities, including improbably cricket, as well as the predictable football, swimming, diving, track, etc. Disturbing Nazi propaganda devoted to physical culture being instilled in the young. Also some kitschy illustration and photos of sculpture of athletes. Despite the clear purpose of glorifying young athletes, here and there slip in children who look markedly uncomfortable and awkward. Propaganda aside, the book is a modest but remarkable example of the power of photography. Light soiling to the cloth cover.

Meklenburg in Bildern Redigirt und Mit Erlaeuterndem Texte Begleitet, Lisch, G. C. [Georg Christian Friedrich]
9 Lisch, G. C. [Georg Christian Friedrich] Meklenburg in Bildern Redigirt und Mit Erlaeuterndem Texte Begleitet
Rostock J. G. Tiedemann'schen Hof-Steindruckerei 1842 First Edition Cloth Very Good
8vo. 20 by 14 cm. [4], 68 pp. With 24 hand-colored plates, mostly views of Meklenburg's cities and their buildings, squares, monuments, parks, surroundings, but also a few costume plates. This would appear to be the first volume of four in a series, although this volume works as a standalone work, as there is no indication of volume number. Copies of this work were also issued without color. The coloring here greatly enhances the illustrations, especially because it is so finely done. The plates are of modest size yet very detailed, and so the coloring was executed with great precision. The book has scattered foxing, more frequent on the text pages but also affecting the plate margins at times. Soiling on the cover.

Sketches in Belgium and Germany, Louis Haghe
10 Louis Haghe Sketches in Belgium and Germany
London Hodgson & Graves 1940 First Edition Quarter Morocco Very Good Minus
26 tinted plates, each measuring 21.5 by 14 inches, or 54 by 34 cm, of Bruges, Heidelberg, Nuremburg, Cologne, Liege, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Louvain, Antwerp, Munich, Oudenarde, Treves, etc. The inclusion of Austrian cities might seem anomalous, but it should be realized that Germany as a modern nation was not yet in existence and so the designation of "Germany" in the title referred to areas where German was the predominant language. Rebacked with red morocco. Boards have considerable wear, with marbled paper pastedown suffering some abrasion losses and heavy edgewear. The plates are on card thick paper. Light occasional foxing in margins. With bookplate of library on FEP and a small embossed stamp on title from same. Otherwise no evidence of ex-lib.
