"Painted" Sheet of Ten Cupon de Racionamiento, Post-Spanish Civil War Falange Ration Stamps
1 "Painted" Sheet of Ten Cupon de Racionamiento, Post-Spanish Civil War Falange Ration Stamps
1944 NA Good
The pictorial side of the coupons shows a fighter holding two flags. While printed, one can easily perceive this image as having been painted directly onto the sheet, and this lends excitement to the image. Both sides of the sheet are stained, but not so much as to compromise the image, and we believe as an unused sheet this is a rare survivor.

2 A Los Toros! Viva Espana!
Valencia Lit. S. Dura Leporellos Very Good
N.d., circa 1890. Oblong, 10.5 by 15 cm. 12 color plates depicting crowd heading to arena on the front cover, then within the leporello all the pageantry and ritual of the bull fight, with an illustration of the bulls reposing in a pasture on the back cover. The panorama was almost certainly produced as a souvenir -- a keepsake for someone attending the bullfight and hawked by peddlers calling out to passerbys on the periphery of the arena. The quality of the printing is not necessarily of the highest level, but the arrangement of the images in a leporello has a compact charm all its own. Light age toning, and trivial signs of wear.

3 Catalogo de propagana taurina 1961. Imprenta-Litografia Ortega Valencia-Espana. Catalogo Muestrario. Carteles, Cartelitos, Cabeceras, Prospectos, Billetes.
Valencia 1960 Wraps Near Fine
4to. 29.5 by 23 cm. Unpaginated, 48 leaves in colorful wrappers. Setting this catalogue apart from earlier Ortega catalogues, all of which are scarce, is besides the shape, the facing pages from the specimen samples feature action line illustrations of various facets of the bullfight. Splashily colorful trade catalogue from lithographic printer specializing in cards, tickets, programs and posters dedicated to bullfights and local fairs and fiestas. Much of the content is brilliantly illustrated promotions of bullfights, with flyers, posters and the like tipped in, generally two or three pasted onto the same base leaf. Samples which in practice might have been printed in varying sizes, often much larger than in the catalogue, they capture the thrill, ritual and spirit of the sport. The pages with tickets and some other items are less eye candy but no less useful documents of the material paraphernalia of the sport, and reminders too of the manifold commercial aspects of an entertainment business. Quite scarce, with the only several copies surfacing on OCLC from other years. Light wear.

[Spanish Manuscript] Royal Grant of Arms
5 [Spanish Manuscript] Royal Grant of Arms
1760 Full Blindstamped Morocco Very Good
Very beautiful Spanish Grant of Arms, with four full-page fetchingly naive paintings on vellum. These include one of a knight jousting, in addition to the the expected coat-of-arms, etc. Dated 1760, the manuscript bears the stamp of King Charles III. Folio, 32.5 by 22 cm. Three vellum leaves (one with painting on both sides), followed by 60 paginated leaves of paper, then 50 unpaginated leaves of paper. The unpaginated pages are given over to official correspondence, notarizations, and legal confirmation and the like. In addition to the full page paintings, there are two other pages with elaborate rococo watercolored decoration, plus occasional uses of red or green watercolor to mark a name or section break. These are less elaborate than might typically be associated with these Spanish patent illuminated manuscripts, in part, perhaps, because of the later date. But compensating for what might be seen as a lack in this area are the paintings, which definitely strike us as almost folk art, in the best sense of that descriptive rubric. This is undeniably a relative matter -- we are comparing this manuscript to others of the same purpose. The artwork brings to mind what is sometimes referred to as peasant Rococo. Surely this level of artistry would almost seem paradoxical to the august function of the particular document, and therein resides its especial charm and singularity. The vellum leaves are separated by yellow silk tissue guards. Also containing a family tree. The writing is throughout, and especially in the primary document, a very neat cursive calligraphy. Throughout there are tiny inconspicuous holes, and sometimes straight lines at the base of the leaves, where the writing instrument or ink has bore through the paper. Nonetheless the written document remains handsome and thoroughly legible. Light wear to the binding.

7 Rodriguez, Manuel Moreno, artist Tipos Espanoles
Madrid Romo y Fussel Paper pastedown on boards Near Fine
N.d., circa 1890s. Oblong, 35 by 24 cm, 14 by 9.5 inches. With 20 chromolithographic plates of Spanish costume. Most plates with two figures, with each plate representing a particular region of Spain. Interspersed are short scores for music associated with the various regions: "Sevillanas", "Gallegada", "Malaguena", "Sardana" (Cataluna), et. al. The plates are on a card thick glossy paper. Probably a work produced with the tourist trade in mind, and so there is no written text to speak of. Clean within, with minor soiling and wear to the boards.
