Galleria Storica dell'Italia Contenente in Cento Intagli Miniati i Fatti Piu Notabili Avvenuti nel Corso di X Secoli Illustrati di Descrizioni e Notizie (Two Volumes), C. Sabattini, C. Rusconi, etc.
2 C. Sabattini, C. Rusconi, etc. Galleria Storica dell'Italia Contenente in Cento Intagli Miniati i Fatti Piu Notabili Avvenuti nel Corso di X Secoli Illustrati di Descrizioni e Notizie (Two Volumes)
Firenze David Passigli 1845-6 First Edition Full Morocco Near Fine
Uncommon title with 100 bright and hand-colored plates depicting major figures and events of Italian history. Each plate accompanies generally eight to twelve text pages relating a tale or biography of the figure(s) depicted. The articles are ornamented with lovely ornate borders which vary in color and design from one piece to the next. The work itself was issued at a time when Italian consciousness was finally being roused with the first rumblings for unification, which would finally come to fruition two decades later, but it is significant that in this work the heros and heroines highlighted come from all over the Italian peninsula, including Naples, Venice, etc. then separate kingdoms, principalities, or under Austrian or Church control. The beauty and scale of this two volume set ensured that it would be treasured and also that it would be lovingly consulted repeatedly to learn about or re-acquiant oneself with the rich heritage of Italian legends. The plates themselves are colored in an interesting manner, with the background and secondary characters and scenery colored lightly, with a thin layer, and the focal point featuring deeper colors, enriched with gum arabic, and the effect of this two-fold approach is to render almost a depth of field. This copy of the set is clean throughout, with both the plates and text leaves nearly spotless. The red morocco was bound by Stikeman & Co. of New York. It has some rubbing along the joints and edges, with heavier wear in the corners. Nonetheless the binding remains handsome and complements well the luxuriance of the content.

Le Plutarque Francais, Vies des Hommes et Femmes Illustres de la France, Ave Leurs Portraits en pied; publiť par Ed. Mennechet. (8 Volumes), Dumas, Alexandre, et. al. Edited by Eduoard Mennechet
3 Dumas, Alexandre, et. al. Edited by Eduoard Mennechet Le Plutarque Francais, Vies des Hommes et Femmes Illustres de la France, Ave Leurs Portraits en pied; publiť par Ed. Mennechet. (8 Volumes)
Paris L'Imprimerie de Crapelet 1835-1841 First edition Quarter Morocco. Marbled Boards. Very Good Plus
4to. 26.5 by 18 cm. 192 hand-colored engraved plates starting with Clovis and continuing on to the Napoleonic era, with the final portrait being of Eugene de Beauharnais. This is then a chronological presentation of the most important French personages -- monarchs, courtiers, warriors, poets, essayists and novelists, artists, saints, scientists, politicians, etc. The portraits accompany biographies of the individuals. Other than Napoleon, these articles run six to sixteen double columned pages, and so the treatments are most certainly not superficial glosses as one might find in a typical glossary of the famous or even a standard encyclopedia. (Napoleon, being the towering figure that he was, is treated to four articles and four portraits, the longest of the articles being 29 pp.) These pieces are written by many different authors, too numerous to list. In any case, it is surely the plates that are of greatest interest, some of awhich, among the more ancient, are artists' imaginings of how the individuals might have looked, since there is generally no accurate visual record of their appearance, if even there are paintings from the individuals' lifetime. The bright and varied coloring of the plates greatly enhances them, and this coloring is often enriched with gum arabic. (Note that this work is not always colored, and it is also uncommon to find the full complement of plates as are here. As with the writers of the biographical articles, the designers (artists) and engravers are too numerous to list. Some light scattered foxing, and more general browning to the pages. Light wear to outer hinges, but overall a clean, sound set.

6 Maurois, Andre. Illustrations by Ferdinand Fargeot Ariel ou la Vie de Shelley
Paris Editions Mornay 1932 Limited Edition Full Decorated Calf Very Good
8vo. 20 by 15.5 cm. 329 pp. Original wraps bound in. Since there is no number to this copy, it is presumed this was one of the 55 copies produced "hors commerce". Regardless, the full calf binding is special, with its watercolor cameo centerpiece of a sailboat on the front, the floral vignette on the back, and portrait of Shelley on the spine. Alas, the calf is heavily rubbed along the joints, with starting by the lower rear joint, and the spine is darkened and heavily rubbed. Inside, the book is clean and fresh, with the color illustrations uniformly a delight.

9 S.N. Behrman. Illustrations by Saul Steinberg Duveen
New York Random House 1952 Very Good Plus Fair Jacket
Highly readable and entertaining biography of the colorful art impresario of the turn-of-the-twentieth century who made a fortune selling and reselling Old Masters paintings from impoverished European nobility to American Robber Barons. Behrman was a highly successful and commercial playwright on Broadway in the mid-20th century and in fact based one of his plays, "Pongo", loosely on Duveen, with Charles Boyer cast in the part of the larger than life gallery owner. Clean and tight copy. DJ has wear, with a few closed tears and chips. Most of the DJ is however present.

15 Villegas, Lucio A., editor Album de Cinelandia. Biografias y retratos autenticos
Hollywood, CA Mac Printing Company 1928 First Edition Wraps Very Good Plus
An oversized Hollywood facebook album from when they had faces, issued less than a year after the release of "The Jazz Singer", when silent movies was in its last gasp. Folio-sized, 14 by 10 inches, 35 by 26 cm. 201 pp. Photos of leading Hollywood stars on rectos, with biographical information on the facing page. Among the hundred stars are the giants, many whose names are still big, generally because they survived the transition to sound unharmed -- the obvious stars such as Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper, Clara Bow, Lillian Gish, Mary Pickford, Chaplin, Fairbanks, Marion Davies, Buster Keaton, Menjou, Janet Gaynor, etc. etc., as well as those whose names have become more obscure, or whose reputation for whatever reason is entirely centered in the silent era, such as Billie Dove, Renee Adoree, Doris Costello, Pola Negri, Langdon, Billy Haines, the Talmadge sisters, Esther Ralston, etc. etc. Al Jolson is among the stars, his turn in film the previous year marking the beginning of the end of the era captured by this album. The text is in Spanish, but it should be noted that it is far more than a simple translation of the contemporaneous actors photographic yearbook, with the biographical information occasionally getting into detail that was decidedly not issued by publicity central, albeit never venturing into the salacious and scandalous. The Orientalist color lithograph on the front cover of a beautiful woman with a vacant look while holding a bejeweled mirror and a mask of a theatrical muse is particularly attractive. The wraps have minor closed tears around the fringe, as inevitable in this instance if the book were ever shelved standing, and there is a slightly longer closed tear along upper front joint. Internally the book is clean and tight, and thus this is an exemplary copy really.
