Chief Paints. Color Styles and Painting Guide for Beautifying and Protecting Your Home
2 Chief Paints. Color Styles and Painting Guide for Beautifying and Protecting Your Home
Full Leather. Spiral Spine. Very Good
N.d., circa late 1940s. Folio, 43 by 33 cm. 59 pp. Missing only one paint strip, of 215. Many color illustrations of house exteriors and interiors, working in the activities of the wholesome American nuclear family ideal of the period, with attractive young parents and their small children. Homes are generally modest but handsome suburban clapboard colonials, with modern, southern plantation and ranch houses also shown. The illustrations are uniformly pleasing, and their interest lies in their sociological content as well. The catalogue is chock-full of explanatory material on all the paint and stain products of the company, along with many do-it-yourself instructions and tips, and so it was really much more than a simple catalogue or color guide. Wear and soiling to the cover. Light wear to pages, which are generally clean.

Eighteenth Century Gouache French Fan Design Depicting Monastery on Island
4 Eighteenth Century Gouache French Fan Design Depicting Monastery on Island
NA Very Good
N.d., mid-18th Century almost certainly, a hand-colored design on a thin paper which was meant to have been folded and attached to the spokes of a fan but wasn't. The paper is a half-circle, with the length 54 cm, the height, 27 cm. The image is relatively small, measuring about 24 by 7 cm. The imagery is a pleasant body of water, a swath of grass on its far bank, and a small complex of buildings which to us looks as if it might be a monastery since there are three towers, but one can interpret the buildings as just a small hamlet as well. Some light soiling at the edges. The paper itself is not entirely flat -- it has some waviness -- but it could be handsomely mounted, matted and frames.

The image is dominated by blue and a tenebrous palette and is not large, measuring a 25 by 10 cm, in a crescent shape, with a light blue field extending beyond. Eighteenth Century Gouache French Fan Design of a Bucolic Setting, with Peasants, a Peacock and Other Fowl, and a Brick Ruin by Water
10 Eighteenth Century Gouache French Fan Design of a Bucolic Setting, with Peasants, a Peacock and Other Fowl, and a Brick Ruin by Water
NA Very Good
N.d., mid-18th Century almost certainly, a hand-colored design on vellum which was meant to have been folded and attached to the spokes of a fan but wasn't. The paper is a half-circle, with the length 52.5 cm, the height, 29 cm. The image is richly colored, with the dominance of deep blues and greens, and the scene evokes the pastoral fantasy so infectious to the aristocracy during the reign of Louis XV. The image itself would have filled out the fan. The vellum has many a flattened crease, and there is light soiling, and perhaps a touch of fading of the gouache paint on the image. Still, something that would be very attractive mounted and matted.

11 Music Box Cigarette Dispenser with Decoration of Two Shelves Lined with Books
Japan NA Fine
Fifties Modern kitsch, once known as "Japanese junk". 12 cm tall, 11.5 cm wide, 11 cm deep, it passes as a wooden cube, with a lit cigarette painted onto the lower front, and two shelves of dollhouse sized wooden books above. When one presses a button, up pops a terrier who dispenses with a cigarette. One loads the contraption with cigarettes by lifting a front lid atop. A fun piece that goes perfectly with Fifties Modern, the rage in the vintage and antique decorating world.

Salesman's Sampler Album for Chromolithographic Transferware Decals
12 Salesman's Sampler Album for Chromolithographic Transferware Decals
Hardcover. Cloth spine. Patterned paper pasted Very Good
N.d., circa 1900. Folio, 42 by 29.5 cm. 108 leaves, nine of which are folding, containing hundreds of samples of ceramic transferware. The decals include flowers and bouquets, fruits, picturesque views (buildings, panoramas, bucolic settings, harbors, etc.), Chinoiserie imagery, human studies (lovely young maidens, seraphs, children, animals (birds and horses), ornaments (Rococo, geometric, Art Nouveau). These various categories are mostly grouped separately, notwithstanding the frequent overlap (animal studies will have a floral element, the views might be framed with ornament, etc.) The final section shows various decals on a brown or black background which heightens the visual impact of the decals. These decals are generally the more elaborate and/or more spectacular ones, and in this section, there is no particular subject category order as far as we can discern. Many of these, perhaps two-thirds, are identical in terms of their imagery, to chromolithographic die-cuts of the period, except here the samples are not die-cuts but rather impressed onto the sheets. The rest are transfer images that one might also see on furniture but are definitively not of a more general decorative usability -- they are not what one might find on greeting or trade cards of the period. The decals are of varying size, and the pages range from a single decal to up to 13, with the majority of pages having one or two and but for a small number of pages, there are four or less per page. Each of the decals is accompanied by a printed stamp with a stock number (which is inked). From this we know the source of the album was a German company, probably one based in Bavaria, which was known for its high level of chromolithography, but we can't unfortunately identify the specific enterprise. Lifting of the surface to some of the decals, with loss to the imagery of those decals affected as part of the color is transferred to the tissue guard. This affects only a small percentage of the decals, and never is there a complete loss, but rather, merely a flattening of the color in these images. Some of the tissue guards are sticking to the underlying leaves, or there is a general stickiness to guards, thus resulting in the aforementioned instances of lifting. One page has a small cut-out, which we assume was done to remove a single decal. Some paper loss to the cover pastedown. Overall, this remains an exciting, extraordinary collection of transferware ornament and decoration from around 1900.

Histoire de L'Art Decoratif de XVI Siecle a Nos Jours, Arsene Alexandre
19 Arsene Alexandre Histoire de L'Art Decoratif de XVI Siecle a Nos Jours
Paris Henri Laurens 1892 Half Morocco, with slipcase Fine
Heavy folio-sized, 40 by 32 cm, 15.5 by 12 inches. 15 lbs., with slipcase. vii, 336 pp, with 60 plates, 48 of which are color chromolithographs, and several of these are two paged. A magnificent survey of the decorative arts, touching on furniture, glass, porcelain, faience and ceramics, enamel, metalwork, fabric, etc. A truly magnificent and majesterial work, and this is a copy that is fully commensurate, with its half purple morocco over marbled boards, which are themselves unusually thick and substantial. Perhaps the one minor defect is that the spine leather has been sunned to a brown, but the difference in color with that on the boards is unlikely to disconcert. Gilt edges all around, and immaculate within. With slipcase of cloth and morocco trim.
