1 [Dance Card or Carnet du Bal] Bal
Chez Philipeaux Cloth Spine, "Opaline" Boards Good Plus
N.d., circa 1840s. Measuring 5 by 3.5 cm. Nine leaves, most of which are blanks. Six pages on three card leaves, with illustrations of the dances, the Sicilienne, the Rodowa, and the Schotich, and the other pages with blank numbered lines to be filled in with prospective dance partners, and captions for the Mazurks, the Contredanse and the Galop. Quite a beautiful survival. The boards are of an opaline, or shell-like material which glistens. Wear to the silk endpapers and the cloth spine.

[Victorian Dance Card] Annual Summer-Night's Festival of the James Everard Club, at Terrace Garden, Wenesday Evening, June 7th, '76 Music by Prof. T. H. Joyce
2 [Victorian Dance Card] Annual Summer-Night's Festival of the James Everard Club, at Terrace Garden, Wenesday Evening, June 7th, '76 Music by Prof. T. H. Joyce
New York T. F. Eagan, printer 1876 Near Fine
A restrained dance card from the U.S. Centennial year with the club's monogram the primary decorative element on the front cover, and "1876" surrounded by calligraphic tracery, appears on the back cover. Within is a four page program listing the order of dances, and on the last page the officers of the club. Nothing otherwise is known about the James Everard Club. The Terrace Garden, where the dance was held, was probably one of the large open-aired restaurants and/or beer halls so popular in New York in the late 19th century. The dance card opens in notepad style with the spine on top. Other than light soiling to the pink cover, the card is in a wonderful shape of prerservation. With its tasseled string still attached.

[Victorian Dance Card] Forty-Seventh Annual Ball of the Thistle Benevolent Association at Lyric Hall, Friday Evening, Jan. 10, '79 Music by Professor Wm. Robertson
3 [Victorian Dance Card] Forty-Seventh Annual Ball of the Thistle Benevolent Association at Lyric Hall, Friday Evening, Jan. 10, '79 Music by Professor Wm. Robertson
New York presumed 1879 Fine
An ornate dance card decorated with lace, silk ribbon and a chromolithographic die-cut centerpiece and gilt borders on the front cover. The style is very much akin to Valentine's Cards of the period. Within is a four page program listing dances and Supper to be served from 11 to 2 and on the back, the names of officers of the association, all now obscure personages. The Thistle Benevolent Association, which obviously goes back to 1832, was incorporated in 1851 to provide assistance to "the deserving poor". The card is in a fine state of preservation, with the requisite string also intact. The only very minor issue is a small spot in which the rear endpaper is lost.

4 [Victorian Dance Card] Sixth Annual Ball of the Electric Club, at Harmonie Rooms, 139 145 Essex Street, On Thanksgiving Eve, Nov. 28th, 1877. Music By Boswald.
1877 Near Fine
This dance card is notable for two reasons that have little to do with the design of the card per se -- namely, as a very early celebration of electricity -- it precedes the creation of the Edison Company by a year, and yet it is the Sixth Annual Ball, and further, it predates by eight years the known incorporation of the Electric Club; and as probably an early relic from the Jewish immigrant community that was to cram the Lower East Side in the years following. The card is also a handsome specimen of paper Victoriana, with its shaped textured paper with cartonnage relief work and its chromo oval cameos on both its front and back. The card, which is 10.5 by 7 cm and bound by a string, with a tassel attached, has four pages of content within, with the obligatory list of dances and the names of the men in charge of the event and/or active in the Club. Light soiling to the cover.
