United States Tire Company; M. B. Brown PRinting & Binding Co. 1917 First Edition Wraps Very Good
A most unusual and winsome piece of cycling ephemera, with each page featuring a poem, sometimes adapted from a well-known nursery rhyme, and "geared" towards cycling and the promotion of U.S. Tire Co.'s tires, naturally. Besides the charm of the verse, a few other things set apart this promotional brochure: the combination of color lithography with more conventional black and white lithography then the norm in trade catalogues, and the featuring of a cricket as a mascot appearing on every page. Now something we are familiar with, this was not a common advertising device at the time. The tie-in to a cricket was the slogan, "Get the bicycle bug", which is appended to most of the images of the cricket. 32 pp, not including wraps. The brochure measures 6.75 by 5 inches. A business' ink stamp is pressed onto the inside cover, front and back, and a single leaf within. The white of the pages is slightly darkened. The wraps show light wear.
