1 Miniature Garden
Box Very Good
Six Japanese ceramic figures -- a tori, a garden bridge, a pagoda, a person, a pavilion (?) -- all in the original box and unused, with thin string holding them down. N.d., circa 1930 -- almost certainly, pre-war. Also with accompanying instructions entitled "How to make a Japanese Dish Garden" on a folded sheet. A charming relic, with moderate wear and soiling to the box, which remains nonetheless structurally sound and attractive, with its paper pastedown illustration. The box is 12 by 10.5 by 3.5 cm, and the largest piece, the bridge, is 8 cm long.

2 Moderne Gartenfiguren D.R.G. M. Nr. 292723, 292724, 292725
Friedrichroda, Germany C. F. Ortlepp 1905 First edition Wraps Near Fine
Scarce, extraordinary trade catalogue for garden ornaments, many whimsical, with eye-catching bright color chromos highly evocative of a children's book. By scarce, we mean not only the non-existence of a physical copy to be found on OCLC First Search (there is apparently an Internet copy at Cambridge), but also, we are not aware of a trade catalogue quite like this one, other than, perhaps some toy catalogues. Oblong, 24.5 by 33.5 cm. Five leaves, each a bold color plate on the recto, and wrap covers. The ornaments are of realistic looking animals, anthropomorphic animals, a maiden, gnomes doing various gnome things, a pith helmeted army officer, comical men, playful frogs, etc. Although we have certainly seen animals and gnomes as lawn ornaments, we are not sure they have ever lived up to the likenesses promised here. Some of the figures are holding signs with warnings or playful messages. Condition: discoloration around the staples on the wraps. Fading to the wraps' orange coloration. A tiny edge chip on one of the plates.

Some of the models are unusual designs and quite wonderful, and while the photos show the fixtures with a plain black background and no flora or climbing vines, one can easily picture these in lovely, elaborate garden surroundings. The Small Garden of Gloria Stuart, D'Ambrosio, Joseph J.
5 D'Ambrosio, Joseph J. The Small Garden of Gloria Stuart
1986 Limited First Edition With Box Like New
No. 49 of 50 copies of this artist's book inspired by the movie star Gloria Stuart (1910 -2010). Ms. Stuart was a leading lady in the 1930s and early 1940s, best known then for her roles in "The Invisible Man", and many decades later, after a long retirement from the movies, for her role in "Titanic" in 1997. Ms. Stuart, though, was far from idle during her many years away from acting, and her multifarious productivity away from the camera are every bit as fascinating as her Hollywood career. Besides being a political activist sympathetic to liberal causes throughout her life, Ms. Stuart was active in the decorative arts as a designer and business owner, and she enjoyed considerable success as a primitivist painter as well. Most pertinent to this book, Ms. Stuart became both an ardent gardener and an artisan printer, producing artist's book in which she did virtually everything, including the writing, the designing and the printing. While this book was written and produced by Joseph J. D'Ambrosio, a celebrated California book artist, it is a celebration and homage to Ms. Stuart's achievements, and some of the elements in the book such as the overlay of foliage imagery are a nod to Ms. Stuart's own work. This D'Ambrosio creation impresses with many other clever effects such as its intricate paper cuts of the preliminary pages to conjure up a three dimensional illusion of forest and trees, with the foreground a caryatid of two tree trunks shaped like women's bodies. D'Ambrosio has bestowed on us an object of revelatory beauty, and while the aesthetic is unabashedly modernist, the spirit is traditional artistry and artisanship at its best. The book, which is modest in size, a little over 6 inches tall, is in mint condition, and it is protected with a cloth box that contains a felt repository or well in which the book resides.

7 Miller, Philip and Thomas Martyn The Gardener's and Botanist's Dictionary; Containing the Best and Newest Methods of Cultivating and Improving the Kitchen, Fruit, and Flower Garden, and Nursery; Of Performing Practical Parts of Agriculture; Of Managing Vineyards, and of Propagating All Sorts of Timber Trees. . . . (4 volumes)
London F. C. and J. Rivington, C. and W. Nicol, R. Baldwin, etc. 1807 First Edition Full Calf Very Good Minus
Magisterial work on gardening, with some engraved plates. Folio, 44 by 28 cm. Overall, this is a beautiful copy, with a contemporary calf binding. Gilt ruled borders and other simple gilt decoration. Marbled edges and marbled endpapers. Some scuffs and rubbing. The primary issue is the joints which are mostly cracked, but with the boards holding. Because of the weight and size of the volumes, it is our view that it is best to leave things as they are. The binding is unquestionably worth preserving, as the volumes have an august shelf presence even now, and any repair of the joints is unlikely to be wholly satisfactory. Otherwise, some occasional foxing, but generally clean.
