1 Les Bourbons Peints par Eux-Mêmes, ou Entrée de la Famille Royale en France
Paris Chez Janet First edition Vellum. Slipcase. Very Good Minus
Scarce, with only known copy in BNF -- no other copies found on OCLC First Search. N.d., circa 1816. Near miniature, 112 by 62 mm. 80 pp. Seven copper engraved portrait plates of the Bourbons restored to power following the Congress of Vienna. This quintessential lady's pocket book -- it resembles with its slipcase and other aspects the pretty almanacs produced by Janet, the publisher here, and Le Fuel during the Restoration period. This was seems to be a souvenir and celebration of the Restoration, and we have to think it was issued early during the period when hopes ran high and disillusionment with the monarchy had not set in. Condition: vertical crack of vellum on spine. Moderate foxing/soiling in the interior. Slipcase heavily soiled, structually sound though.

Londres T. Spilsbury Janvier 1788 Full Calf Very Good Minus
8vo. xvi, 424 pp. An account of Calonne's administration. Spine has gilt embossed "II" below title, suggesting that this was previously paired with Necker's writing. However, the volume is complete in terms of the given title. (There are no folding tables, as in a larger format version.) Upper spine extremity a bit chewed, with small pinprick hole beneath. Scuffing and wear to leather elsewhere. Light scattered soiling within.

Original Signed Drawings by Robert Cruikshank [for] Chronicles of the Bastille, Cruikshank, Robert
3 Cruikshank, Robert Original Signed Drawings by Robert Cruikshank [for] Chronicles of the Bastille
London 1845 Full Morocco. Cloth Slipcase. Fine
4to. 27 by 20 cm. The Chronicles of the Bastille, Louis Alexis Chamerovzow, first appeared in 1845 and featured Cruikshank's drawings. The twelve signed watercolors here are dated 1844 or1845. Also, embedded into the back of the front cover is the steel plate used to make the steel engraved title page of the novel. As a title page an engraved copy of this plate is used. On the backs, and sometimes in the margins, are light pencil notes that serve as captions for the watercolors and provide information as to placement in the book. It is unknown whether these notes were preliminary to the publication or were done by a later hand. Bound elegantly by H. Zucker of Philadelphia, with gilt filets and turn-ins.

5 Dumas, Alexandre, et. al. Edited by Eduoard Mennechet Le Plutarque Francais, Vies des Hommes et Femmes Illustres de la France, Ave Leurs Portraits en pied; publié par Ed. Mennechet. (8 Volumes)
Paris L'Imprimerie de Crapelet 1835-1841 First edition Quarter Morocco. Marbled Boards. Very Good Plus
4to. 26.5 by 18 cm. 192 hand-colored engraved plates starting with Clovis and continuing on to the Napoleonic era, with the final portrait being of Eugene de Beauharnais. This is then a chronological presentation of the most important French personages -- monarchs, courtiers, warriors, poets, essayists and novelists, artists, saints, scientists, politicians, etc. The portraits accompany biographies of the individuals. Other than Napoleon, these articles run six to sixteen double columned pages, and so the treatments are most certainly not superficial glosses as one might find in a typical glossary of the famous or even a standard encyclopedia. (Napoleon, being the towering figure that he was, is treated to four articles and four portraits, the longest of the articles being 29 pp.) These pieces are written by many different authors, too numerous to list. In any case, it is surely the plates that are of greatest interest, some of awhich, among the more ancient, are artists' imaginings of how the individuals might have looked, since there is generally no accurate visual record of their appearance, if even there are paintings from the individuals' lifetime. The bright and varied coloring of the plates greatly enhances them, and this coloring is often enriched with gum arabic. (Note that this work is not always colored, and it is also uncommon to find the full complement of plates as are here. As with the writers of the biographical articles, the designers (artists) and engravers are too numerous to list. Some light scattered foxing, and more general browning to the pages. Light wear to outer hinges, but overall a clean, sound set.

6 Montorgueil, Georges. Illustrator: Job [ [Jacque Onfray de Breville] Three Works of Montorgueil and Job bound in a single volume: France Son Histoire. La Cantiniere France Son Histoire. Les Trois Couleurs.
Paris Charavay, Martoux (the first two works). Charavay, Martin (the third work). Edouard Crete, printer. Half Morocco, Marbled Boards. Good
Folio, 14 by 11.5 inches, 36 by 30 cm. N.d., circa 1900. Rebacked, with the original morocco spine mounted onto skiver. The skiver, though, being a different shade of red, is conspicuous along the entire front joint, and at the lower end in particular, the reattachment looks clumsy. The leather of the spine has heavily rubbed, with dry chipping at the extremities. The leaves within are heavily age toned and a bit brittle, with some marginal chipping. A few tape repairs. The leaves of the three volumes are not exactly even, and so this comes off similar to many a sammelbund. Still, excellent value for two antique French juvenile classics.

9 Sennep, J. (Jean) A l'Abattoir les Cartellistes!! Album-souvenir des Elections de 1928 Tirage sur véritable papier de boucherie
Paris Editions Bossard 1928 First Edition Wraps Very Good
Folio, 32.5 by 25 cm. Unpaginated, 16 leaves, with printing only on rectos excepting the final leaf on which both sides have drawings. Broad and cutting anthropormophic caricature of politicians of the day. Sennep, whose own political sympathies were decidedly rightist, had a particular animosity towards Leon Blum, but here no one is spared. With a culinary motive running through. Very unique, and a memorable production. A small, stamped-like, hole running through the corner of several of the rear leaves. Cover has soiling.
