1 Hepburns Hepburn Girls Paper Doll Play House Album
NA Good
A fabulous home-made, folk art book or album of 52 doubles-sided rooms outfitted with furniture, paintings, knick knacks, human figures and various accessories, and with some movable parts as well. Late nineteenth century. The album is oversized, each page 36 by 39 cm oblong, and almost all the rooms are two pages, with a few exceptions. A few rooms appear incomplete, but the vast majority are wholly realized. The Hepburn sisters essentially created a two dimensional dollhouse, or dollhouses, as there are many more rooms than in even a grand dollhouse. And they managed to cheat the two dimensionality somewhat with the occasional movable piece. In all the rooms, a lovely period wallpaper is both the backdrop, the center of our attention, and surely the starting point for the Hepburns imagination. They then did minute cutouts from various sources, mostly printed, a few, their own creation, and pasted these pieces onto the page as in a collage, but the resulting assemblage reads with a coherence that goes beyond the expectation for a collage. The rooms are those of an upper middle class to wealthy residence, and rooms range from comfortable to ornate. All kinds of rooms are represented: parlors, libraries, kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms. The Hepburns have left us with a wonderful record of interior decoration norms of the era. Little information is known of the creators other than their name. It can be inferred that they were probably from the Northeast and either New York City or nearby because of some hints in the material they used as decoration. The album paper is acidic and thus brittle, with many edge chips. A few pieces of furniture and the like are loose. The pages were once bound but now are not, and it would be advisable to keep them loose lest there is greater stress applied to the leaves.
