1 Das Reich der Blumenkönigen. Sinnige Unterhaltung. L’Empire de la reine des fleurs. Récréation raisonnée. The Realm of the Queen of Flowers. Rational entertainment.
Leipzig Peter Carl Geisler Third Edition Folio folder, ribbon ties Good
Scarce, notwithstanding stated third edition, with only copies discovered on OCLC First Search at the LOC, Toronto, and Crystal Bridges Museum. (Given the fragility of the parts and the likely heavy use of the "toy book", and its ephemeral nature to boot, it is easy to conceive of almost all copies being destroyed eventually.) N.d., circa mid-19th century. Folio, 33.5 by 26 cm. With four color litho plates, plus 50 separate color floral pieces which are to be inserted into slots in the plates. The plates depict a vase, a bowl, a ribbon, and another large bowl, and the idea is to allow the child to play with creating different flower arrangements, in the process familiarizing himself with the flower species. The flowers are each numbered, and there is an oblong four page key, rendered in German, French and English. (This key is 21 by 27.5 cm.) For each flower is also a maxim or a short two or three line verse of sentiment associated with that flower. Heavy soiling on the cover. Text pages heavily foxed. Moderate soiling on the plates. Original ribbon ties partially intact but unusable. Most importantly, though, is that all flower pieces are present and well-preserved, so the "paper toy" is as usable as it ever was.

2 Eighteen Mid-19th Century Metamorphic Ladies' Costume Blocks
NA Very Good Minus
N.d., but circa 1850. Three cards aligned one above the other make for a complete figure, with the completed figure measuring about 10 by 6.5 cm. The bottom pieces are slightly larger than the two top pieces for the figures. Usually one encounters this sort of metamorphic toy in card format, as opposed to the thin wooden block used here. All the figures are of ladies, one a queen or princess, and others a musician, one or two dancers, one a proper lady. The blocks have soiling but are otherwise solid and pleasing.

[Faux Books][Folk Art Mechanical Toy Book] Holy Bible
3 [Faux Books][Folk Art Mechanical Toy Book] Holy Bible
Wood boards. Very Good
Highly unusual fun piece of folk art, with the "Bible" springing up with the touch of a lever. Most definitely one-of-a-kind! N.d., circa 1900, possibly earlier. In size, like a 4to. 33 by 25 cm, 14 cm thick. The bible resembles an early 19th century leather bible. Here, though, the boards and sides are of wood, with the spine a heavy cloth which is painted to look like leather, and with the paint looks not unlike a paper mache composition. The snap is on the fore-edge, with the metal lever on the top. All sides are painted in gilt. Moderate wear throughout, as befitting an old heirloom bible.

[Paper Toys] Chocolat Lombart Souvenir de la Fête Four toys: policeman, private or scout, jockey, clown
4 [Paper Toys] Chocolat Lombart Souvenir de la Fête Four toys: policeman, private or scout, jockey, clown
Fine
N.d., circa 1900. The toy figures were meant to bring amusement by twirling them around on a toothpick. WIth their limbs attached but movable, the figures would then somersault and engage in spastic acrobatics. The figures came in an envelope along with an instruction sheet and toothpick or axle. We have all these pieces for all the figures we have. We do not know whether the company made other such figures, but we would guess that it did. The company goes back to 1760 and continued in business until 1957 when it was absorbed by another chocolatier, Menier. In the early 20th century it claimed to have the largest factory within Paris.

5 [Political][Movable] You can pick the Winner. Pick Selz Shoes. They Win Every Time. To find THE WINNER move card very slowly. If Selz Shoes were Candidates They'd be elected every time.
NA Very Good
As one pushes or pulls a side tab, the image morphs from one candidate in the four man Presidential contest of 1912 as if on a television screen. The morphing figures are Woodrow Wilson, Howard H. Taft, Theodore Roosevelt and Eugene Debs. The card is postcard sized: 9 by 14 cm. The mechanism works but can be a little fussy initially. Light soiling to the card.

6 [Trade Promotion] Flexible Flyer "The Sled that steers" Promo, [with] Three Dimensional Trade Card
Philadelphia S. L. Allen & Co.
N.d., circa 1900. The trade card is the more novel of the two pieces, since one bends the sides where they are supposed to fold and one has a sled made with card, replete with a movable (slightly movable) steering mechanism. The back of this card has promo information on the sled. The promo flyer for the Flexible Flyer is four pages, including the wraps, but it is illustrated with sleds rendered in full color. The S.L. Allen & Co. got under way in the late 1860s with farm implement patents and it patented the Flexible Flyer in 1889. The trade card is 15 by 8.5 cm when the sides aren't folded down, and the brochure is oblong, 9 by 15 cm.

7 Andriessen, P. J. [Pieter Jacob] (1815-1877) Wat Er Alzoo in de Wereld te Zien is. Een Aardig Boek voor Kinderen, met bijschriften door P. J. Andriessen
Amsterdam G. Theod. Bom. Printer: Emrik & Binger (Haarlem) 1874 Wraps Very Good
Scarce, with the only copy located on OCLC FirstSearch the Koninklijke Bibliothek in the Netherlands. 18 by 13 cm. Unpaginated, 10 leaves, plus wrap covers. Six color plates, each with a flap that when it is pulled up entirely, reveals a completely different illustration, and one that is a complete contrast to the top illustration. Thus an image of a ship at sea becomes bedouins in the desert; an erupting volcano becomes a glacial scene, American Indians in the forest turns into explorers in the Rockies, etc. Accompanying the plates are verses that transport one to the far reaches of the globe and explain the illustrations. Light soiling on the cover. Repaired small closed tear there and on first leaf.

12 Meggendorfer, Lothar Nur fur brave Kinder Verwandlungs-Bilder. Ein Verwandlungsbilderbuch mit 12 feinem Fardruckbildern
Esslingen and Munich J. F. Schreiber Third edition Paper pastedown on boards, cloth spine Very Good Minus
Scarce Meggendorfer title (not to be confused with "Fur brave Kinder"), with the only copy located on OCLC FirstSearch (and not a much later printing) in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. N.d., circa 1890s. Oblong, 28 by 32 cm. Seven leaves. With six tranformations (a total of 12 illustrations effectively): Der Sonntagsreiter, Vor dem Affenhaus, Auf dem See, Die Landpartie, Die bosen Buben and Im Urwald. On facing versos are light humorous verses. All the transformations work, although they can be fussy and care is highly advisable in manipulating at least two of them. The tabs have been replaced, and there have been a few other paper repairs, as per the norm for Meggendorfer toy books, both because of their popular use and the brittleness of the paper stock.

Biedermeier-Wünsche... Fünfzig Kleinfolio-Tafeln in Licht-u. Farbendruck nebst illustriertem Text, Pazaurek, Gustav E.
14 Pazaurek, Gustav E. Biedermeier-Wünsche... Fünfzig Kleinfolio-Tafeln in Licht-u. Farbendruck nebst illustriertem Text
Stuttgart Julius Hoffmann 1908 First Limited Edition Cloth folder Near Fine
No. 165 of 400 copies. Oblong, 26.5 by 33.5 cm. Booklet, running 25 pages, and 50 separate or loose plates, each with a number of images of Biedermeier cards, especially those with movable parts, and other ephemera from that period. One plate with color chromolithographic images; otherwise, the plates are in black and white. This is the indispensable and go-to source still for Biedermeier cards. Biedermeier relates to a period of general stability in Europe between Napoleon's defeat in 1815 and the Revolution of 1848 and specifically pertains to the Teutonic world (the German-speaking areas) where the upper bourgeois was culturally ascendant and superceding Royal and aristocratic patronage as the engine of high cultural development. The Biedermeier cards were a rage, with their intricate, clever mechanisms and pretty hand-colored imagery. Light wear to the outer folio folder. Generally clean.
