Charcoal on paper. Measuring 64 by 53 cm, and with frame, 77 by 63 cm. The portrait is inscribed "taken while on duty at Gen. Pleasanton's headquarters 1863". Adding to the interest is the background of teepee tents and far off, a ship. The artwork has a folk art quality, with non-facial features and clothing rendered loosely, but one senses that the face itself bears a close resemblance to the soldier. Moderate age toning. Scattered foxing.

N.d., circa 1998. Closed, 24.5 by 19 cm. 22 panels with artwork, stretching to close to 420 cm. Printed, but it would appear, unpublished, leporello reproducing a panoramic watercolor painting depicting the alleged sordid aspects of Catherine the Great's life, including, it would appear, the plotting against her husband and her sexual escapades, among them, her final equine moments. The episodic painting, though, is rife with ambiguity, and this is not clarified much by the cryptic captions which are deliberately written as if they were code or perhaps Urdu script. A close examination of these captions will allow one to discern an occasional English word. Still, we ourselves were unable to decode the captions to make much sense of them; this is a challenge we leave for the later collector. The panorama is highly Orientalist in its sensibility, as if it were the creation of a Mongol modernist. While we do not find the artwork beautiful, it has a dream-like quality, and it is most definitely arresting, perhaps disturbingly so. Light soiling. The Introduction by Robbe-Grillet, the well-known French novelist and notorious S and M practitioner, is not included.

N.d., circa 1930s. Folio, 39 by 29 cm. Eleven plates, including title page, housed in a silver folder. The artwork depicts showgirls and their patrons of the shadowy Parisian nightlife demimonde. The style is very much in the style of George Grosz, who almost certainly was a strong influence on Fay in this project. Here we see the lecherous patrons, generally looking like gluttonous capitalists, and the jaded, lewd showgirls generally in a state of dishabille. Coming across very clearly, though, is their solidarity with one another, and there is a strong whiff of lesbianism in their bond, although it should be emphasized that this is never explicit. The ambivalence of the pieces applies to other aspects of them and is in fact a source of their power. There is also an interracial element to the ladies, with black performers among them. At the time, the free and easy relationship among the races probably had a shock value; one wonders whether indeed this was one venue where racial tensions simply melted away among its denizens. The plates have touches of bright color, with the charcoal shading and crisp pencil lines creating an overall tenebrous, netherworldly atmosphere. Fay was an American illustrator who studied with N.C. Wyeth and became a regular contributor to "The Saturday Evening Post" and "The Delineator". He spent much of his career in and around Paris and London, eventually moving outside of Paris, then London, full-time. Scarce, with the only known copy, and this is of only a single lithograph of the set, at Harvard. Moderate wear and soiling to the metallic silver pastedown on the outside folder. Light soiling in the margin of the title plate.

Full Vellum Very Good 
N.d., but late 18th century, after the publication of the original work in 1760, published in Venezia by Remondi. Large 8vo, 25 by 20 cm. 25 pen and ink pages of illustration. These begin with the elaborate pen and ink Baroque title page, with architectural decoration, followed by page showing drawings of hands, a second title with what we presume the one more fully original work by the copyist of seraphs holding up drapery with the title and a woman painter working before an easel, and other illustrative decoration (a broken sculpted head on the ground, etc.). Then 23 pages of pen and ink nude male studies, the figures very Michelangelo-esque in the musculature, and their overall sculptural quality. We would speculate that this copyist was in fact a woman, based on the second title illustration. This particular illustration is delightful, if the human figure itself doesn't have quite the polished execution of the copied material. Inked title on the vellum spine. The vellum is quite soiled. Otherwise, the paper within is of high quality and clean.
