Eighteenth Century Gouache French Fan Design Depicting Monastery on Island
1 Eighteenth Century Gouache French Fan Design Depicting Monastery on Island
NA Very Good
N.d., mid-18th Century almost certainly, a hand-colored design on a thin paper which was meant to have been folded and attached to the spokes of a fan but wasn't. The paper is a half-circle, with the length 54 cm, the height, 27 cm. The image is relatively small, measuring about 24 by 7 cm. The imagery is a pleasant body of water, a swath of grass on its far bank, and a small complex of buildings which to us looks as if it might be a monastery since there are three towers, but one can interpret the buildings as just a small hamlet as well. Some light soiling at the edges. The paper itself is not entirely flat -- it has some waviness -- but it could be handsomely mounted, matted and frames.

Eighteenth Century Gouache French Fan Design of a Bucolic Setting, with Peasants, a Peacock and Other Fowl, and a Brick Ruin by Water
7 Eighteenth Century Gouache French Fan Design of a Bucolic Setting, with Peasants, a Peacock and Other Fowl, and a Brick Ruin by Water
NA Very Good
N.d., mid-18th Century almost certainly, a hand-colored design on vellum which was meant to have been folded and attached to the spokes of a fan but wasn't. The paper is a half-circle, with the length 52.5 cm, the height, 29 cm. The image is richly colored, with the dominance of deep blues and greens, and the scene evokes the pastoral fantasy so infectious to the aristocracy during the reign of Louis XV. The image itself would have filled out the fan. The vellum has many a flattened crease, and there is light soiling, and perhaps a touch of fading of the gouache paint on the image. Still, something that would be very attractive mounted and matted.

9 Fan with Hand-Colored Bucolic Lithograph of Three Pretty Ladies Flirting with a Young Man
NA Very Good
N.d, circa 1840. The fan is 23.5 cm tall, and when spread out with its 18 spokes, spans 43 cm wide. The paper uses has a thick texture similar to antique wall paper of the Biedermeier Period. The scene contained in the lozenge oval lozenge inset is a pastoral scene of three young women of the period flirting with a dashing young man in breeches. Surrounding them are sheep. The ladies seem perhaps too well appointed to be more than playacting at being shepherdesses, but clearly the man is high born and not a peasant. The floral ornamentation surrounding the picture is in a folk art simple style, again such as one might find as a repeat on a wallpaper. The paper on the fan has general wear, with some minor tearing along the edges. Overall the fan is an attractive antique.

Fan-shaped Calendar for 1899, Compliments of Stickney & Poor Spice Co., Founded 1815
10 Fan-shaped Calendar for 1899, Compliments of Stickney & Poor Spice Co., Founded 1815
Wraps Near Fine
Lovely diminutive calendar brochure shaped like a fan, measuring a mere 3.5 by 6 cm, at the widest and tallest, with a ridged edge that emulates the wavy edge of a genuine fan. Seven leaves, including wraps. Promotion on the verso of the front cover, with a page for each month thereafter. Chromo decoration on the front and rear cover, with daisies on the front overlaying the fan trompe d'oeil elements, while the rear is meant to replicate the look of the fan's backing. Typical floral decoration for the period surrounding each month. The interest in this calendar is the novelty in its liliputian dimensions combined with its shape. A few soil marks on the rear. Otherwise, fine.
