Wien Buchwald 1903 Vellum Very Good
9 by 5 cm. Silk moire endpaper on rear. Folded card sheet pasted onto front inside cover. This would appear to have been a short dance, as there were only four dances listed, with an intermission between the third and fourth dance. Dance was held at the Hotel Continental. We render the title twice as the spelling of Pic-Nic is given differently inside and out. With the original slender pencil, with an ivory or bone top piece, and strap. Elaborate Dance Card Sample from the "Fancy Order of Dance", Brooklyn, New York, circa 1880
3 Elaborate Dance Card Sample from the "Fancy Order of Dance", Brooklyn, New York, circa 1880
NA Fine
Highly unusual layered sample card, with elaborate "Dresden"-style decoration on the front, featuring a butterfly, lace faux flowers, wax leaves, several blue beetle figures, ribbons and a wax hand, all atop gilt lace. The card itself is standard size, nearly 12 by 8.5 cm, and it opens to a blank page on the recto where information about a particular dance, its sponsors and sequences would be furnished, and on the facing verso we are given the name of the business, Fancy Order of Dance, and its Brooklyn address, and nothing more. This all comes in a plain box, which being in an excellent state of preservation, has also done its job preserving the delicate card all this time. The card was also protected by typical tissue paper

4 Studenten-Ball. 4. Februar 1896
Wien 1896 Full Morocco Very Good
A relief impression of the main building of the University of Vienna serves as the centerpiece on the front cover of this dance card. Oblong, 7.5 by 11.5 cm. Unpaginated, 46 leaves, with print only on rectos other than first leaf, when also on verso. Following the obligatory listing of dances, the pages have short poems, apercus and/or maxims possibly suggested by the faculty member whose name is given on the top of these pages. This student ball appears to have included students from different schools within the university. With the original thin pencil which serves to seal the booklet closed, and string attached to a metal hook and another, to a metal coin-like piece with a clover design within. Silk moire endpapers. Condition: light tan morocco has soiling, especially on and by spine. One dark spine on spine. Still a handsome dance card.

[Dance Card] Bürgerball des VIII Gemeinde-Bezirkes Josefstadt. Sale Zum Grunen Thor, 11 Februar 1885.
6 [Dance Card] Bürgerball des VIII Gemeinde-Bezirkes Josefstadt. Sale Zum Grunen Thor, 11 Februar 1885.
Wien (Vienna) Aug. Klein 1885 Near Fine
A most unusual dance card from the capital of the waltz during its heyday! On the front is mounted a miniature leaf a day calendar, this calendar bound with a colored pattern satin. The calendar begins on February 11, the day of the particular ball, and continues until the end of the year. This calendar is mounted onto a stiff leather card base, through which a string with the requisite tassel and brass hook are attached. On the other side of the leather piece is the dance card proper, held closed by a thin pencil, and with a cover of silk. One opens the dance card to find a title page, followed by blanks onto which the danseuse would have entered her dance commitments for the evening. This particular card has never been used, and so the pencil, the calendar, the dance card itself, is in wonderful shape, with subtraction from pristine solely the inevitable toll from the passage of time. Measures, at tallest, 70 mm, and about 44 mm wide.
