1 Collection of 19 Postcards with Relief Depictions of Flowers, Fruits and/or Birds
Near Fine
All the cards are circa the first decade of the 20th century. Most, if not all, were made in Germany, the country best known for such fancy printing. The cards generally have a simple sentiment written, such as "Greetings", with a few devoid of a textual message at all. Some of the cards have something extra, such as felt, a silk trim, a lace perimeter, or a thickness from a slice of wood. They are typical postcard sized, 14 by 9 cm, with trivial variations on this. While a few were unused, most were sent to one of a few people living in Pennsylvania. Clearly these were collected by someone who was fond of these relief postcards.

Postcard Bas Relief Portrait of Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom
2 Postcard Bas Relief Portrait of Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom
Toronto Warwick Bro's & Rutter, Limited NA Very Good
N.d., circa 1901, or the aughts of the 20th century. Queen Alexandra was Edward VII's consort, and Edward reigned from 1901 until his death in 1910. This kind of postcard was issued in conjunction with Edward's, and Alexandra's, coronation, but that is not to say that it wasn't issued a little later during the reign. In any event, the slightly raised head, crown and body -- the relief aspect -- gives this postcard a dimensionality that adds to the realism part and parcel with photography. The postcard is a standard size, 138 by 88 cm, or 5.5 by 3.5 inches, and was issued as a Canadian Souvenir Post, Card. This copy was never filled out or sent, so the postage box is uncovered, and in this is printed that postage was then one cent for Canada and the U.S., two cents for abroad. The back, or message side, of the postcard, has light age soiling. The pictorial side has what looks like a filagree of rust on part of its edge.
