1 Fortune. February 1930. Volume 1. Number 1.
New York The Time-Fortune Corp. 1930 First edition Wraps Very Good
The collectible first issue of "Fortune", with a stunningly opulent lay-out and graphics that transcend the monthly magazine genre and were at the time a defying fillip against the pervasive belt-tightening wrought by the Depression. Folio. 35.5 by 28.5 cm. 184 pp. "Fortune" was Henry Luce's second magazine after "Time", and at the time it was a bold idea to bring out a magazine that covered and celebrated business with the stock market crash a recent memory and the unprecedented contraction of the economy and employment looming with no end in sight. The beauty of the graphics is true of both the articles and the advertisements, which also featured for the time a generous amount of color. The typography also exudes an elegance, and the aesthetic qualities of the issue ensured that readers would not casually toss away their copy after a quick read-through. Moderate wear to the cover, with one to two inch closed tears along the front joint and some light soiling and corner creasing. Within, minor corner creasing to some of the leaves, and a few instances of light soiling. Overall, this is a clean, appealing copy.
