Charles & Co. Catalogue. May, 1937
2 Charles & Co. Catalogue. May, 1937
New York 1937 Leatherette Very Good
Attractive culinary catalogue from a prestigious high-end gourmet grocer in New York, one that began in 1848 and continued in business into the 1980s (when it was acquired by Red Apple.) 8vo. 21 by 14 cm. 319 pp. With 8 page supplemental brochure dated September, 1937. The catalogue proper has color plates on both endpapers and two other pages, and many other b/w photos and drawings of products throughout. The outstanding feature of the catalogue aesthetically, though, is its two toned binding, which is high Art Deco, with relief stylized lettering and an image of Hermes! Otherwise, the catalogue is a treasure trove of information on better food products and their pricing back in the 1930s. Condition: fore-edges have light foxing. A few light and minor stains on the binding.

Dr. U.S. Manuels Course of Physical Culture
3 Dr. U.S. Manuels Course of Physical Culture
Philadelphia Croft and Allen Company 1904 Wraps Very Good
12mo. 12.5 by 7.5 cm. [32] pp. Pictorial wrappers, 16 color litho illustrations showing how various exercises are done. The sixteen exercises described are ones we are told were "approved of by a jury of experts". They are mostly vigorous stretches, and they touch on virtually all body parts, including the feet, the trunk, the hands, etc. This scarce brochure (no copies on OCLC) was a promotion for a chocolate and breakfast food (breakfast cocoa) manufacturer. The fact that it is also promoting physical culture might seem an odd initiative for a chocolate company, but certainly one that has become well-worn by breakfast food brands. The final eight pages and the inside rear wrap are devoted to Croft and Allen products, with a chromo image of a Swiss Milk Chocolate box on the inside wrap, and a color illustration of the company's large factory on the rear cover. The manual is a comparatively early specimen of physical culture literature, at least in terms of its seeking to reach a wider audience. Condition: tiny corner chip, front wrap. Otherwise, light wear.

Sportsman's Dinner given by those interested in The Turf and Field, . . . Astor Gallery, Waldorf Astoria, New York
7 Sportsman's Dinner given by those interested in The Turf and Field, . . . Astor Gallery, Waldorf Astoria, New York
New York 1912 First Wraps. Ribbon tie Very Good
Scarce ten course dinner menu (plus snifters and cigarettes) and program for a special celebratory dinner held at the Waldorf Astoria on February 19th, 1912. At the speakers' table were luminaries of New York Society and the racing world such as August Belmont, Paul Cravath, William DuPont and Oakleigh Thorne. Of particular interest is a short piece on American trotters in Russia, where they had been scarfing up most of the medals issued by the Russian government. Another page lists the racing colors of over twenty stable owners, most of whom, if not all, counted among New York's blue bloods. Finally four pages are devoted to the Sportsman's Library, which was to be presented to the Cavalry Posts of the U.S. Army, including testimonials about the now collectible series of sporting classics. 4to. 26 by 20 cm. Unpaginated, ten leaves, printing only on rectos. Pages of a light card stock. No copies located on OCLC First Search.

The Evolution of an Apple Pie
9 The Evolution of an Apple Pie
Chicago The N.K. Fairbank Company 1898 First edition Wraos Fine
Scarce culinary pamphlet, listed on OCLC but with no library holding identified. 16mo. 11 by 8 cm. 12pp. Chromolithographic color illustrations, including on stapled wrapper cover. Advertising pamphlet for cottolene, a baking substitute for butter and lard and made from cottonseed oil and beef suet. Running through the pamphlet is a verse tale describes the steps in creating an apple pie, starting with the fruit on the tree and ending with the pie being served. About half of the pamphlet is devoted to short articles on the applications of cottolene or recipes, including ones for pie crust, apple pie, rhubarb pie, lemon pie, coconut pie and cream pie. These recipes are attributed to women, presumably consumers of the product. And filling out the promotional dimension of the pamphlet are a few testimonials.

11 [Russian Cookbook] ????? ? ??????? ? ????????? ????? [The Book of Healthy and Tasty Food]
Moscow ????????????? 1962 Cloth Good
4to. 26.5 by 21 cm. 424 pp. Many color plates -- these are photo-based color drawings, for the most part. Also many b/w text illustrations, mostly photos. This cookbook, originally published in 1939 and revised afterward, was developed by scientists at the Soviet Institute of Nutrition in the Academy of Medical Sciences. With its lavish illustrations, the book was more than a practical handbook in the kitchen, but also a potent piece of Soviet propaganda. Many of the recipes were not feasible for the average family during the Soviet Era because of the chronic scarcity in grocery stores, but they nonetheless suggested how life was good under the Soviet system. Also, the writers touted the success of the Soviet food industry in the introductory chapter. Moderate wear to binding. Scattered soiling of the pages.

[Trade Catalogue] Sherer-Gillett Co. Here Are
12 [Trade Catalogue] Sherer-Gillett Co. Here Are "The Goods". Look at Them. Patentees and Manufacturers of Sherer's Pure Food Grocery Counters
Chicago Printer: The Commonwealth Press, Chicago 1912 Wraps Good
Oblong, 19 by 27 cm. 24 pp. Catalogue for grocery counters, shelving and bins, made of wood (oak) and with glass-fronted windows to display the contents. The rather elaborate grocery furniture was quite decorative and from a now long bygone age. One might encounter such fixtures occasionally still in a few consciously old-fashioned emporia. The catalogue uses an orange and brown coloring on many of the photos to highlight the product one offer, and there are a few illustrations superimposed of a grocer and a fashionably dressed female customer. With the obligatory testimonials, upon which we rely to date the catalogue. Also separate four page price list (one sheet) and an excerpt from "The Merchant's Journal" with an article praising the company's counters. Scarce, with a single copy possibly of this catalogue located on OCLC, in Delaware, and another catalogue from the company at the Chicago Historical Society and a much later catalogue from the company in Toronto. Condition: cover soiled. A few minor edge chips and tiny closed tears. Moderate wear.
