1 Mineral Specimens
Japan Hardcover Very Good
N.d., circa 1920s. Two trays containing 96 mineral specimens of minerals and rocks. Specimens include graphite, sulphur, copper, gold ore, realgar, stibnite, cinnabar, zincblende, galena, argenite, black ore, aresnopyrite, and on and on. Jumping out to us, non-geologists, are also amber, topaz, asbestos. Rocks include volcanic ash, lava, pumice, various schists and limestones, etc. We believe that this collection is very scarce -- we have been able to find no trace of another such collection on OCLC or elsewhere. Alas, the lack of any publishing information on the box has hampered our search. On the other hand, our search parameters were broad and should have picked up anything remotely similar. We think it is possible that the collection was issued in conjunction with a book, and what we have is the equivalent of the atlas volume. If that were the case, it is possible that there is another title eluding us and not on the box title label. An alternative possibility is that the collection was sold as is, perhaps in a museum gift shop. We know that the set is from Japan, as the country name is stamped on the glossary page (also the FEP), and the box is in a typical Japanese format, with its particular pattern of paper pastedown and its two bone clasps. We are reasonably confident that our copy is well-preserved, with apparent completeness -- all the specimens appear to be present, with minor chipping of one or two speciments only. So even if there are other surviving sets of this, we would doubt that many of them are as nice as ours, given the likelihood that individual specimens would disappear over time. The box measures 27.5 by 18.5 cm, and is 4.5 cm thick. Condition otherwise: the white glossary page and sides have light soiling. Light wear generally.
