11 Clouston, R. S. English Furniture and Furniture Makers of the 18th Century. Illustrated
London Hurst and Blackett 1906 First edition Cloth Very Good
xii, 362, [2] pp. Useful source because chapters devoted not just to the likes of Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Sheraton and Robert Adam, but also to Robert Manwaring, Ince and Mayhew, Mattias Lock, Robert and Richard GIllow, and others, designers who also were influential with their pattern or design books as well as in the case most obviously of Gillows, actual manufacturing. Also written in an almost conversational style, notwithstanding what now might come across as a quaintness of phrasing, inviting to the non-specialist. Throughout photographic illustrations of furniture and patterns. This is a comparatively rare title, not to be confused with a somewhat similarly titled book by Kate Clouston. Some shelfwear to green cloth. Slight fraying of the cloth at the spine extremities. Tight, with clean age-toned pages. Bookplate of W.R. Grace on FEP.

The Life of George Morland, Dawe, George, with an Introduction and Notes By J. J. Foster
13 Dawe, George, with an Introduction and Notes By J. J. Foster The Life of George Morland
London Dickinsons 1904 First Edition Thus Hardcover Near Fine
Book. Folio - over 12. No. 87 of 175 of the Edition de Luxe printed on Japon Vellum paper, with 11 hand-colored plates, 51 other black and white plates. xxxiv + 196 pp. Morland was late eighteenth century artist revered especially for his treatment of pre-Industrial Age rural life, often of human subjects of modest means, and of animals, sometimes as the primary subject of his work but more often as part of the genre scene including people. His work came to be treasured for its nostalgic quality, as his subjects are typically of contented farmers, squires, lasses, maidens and wives at play or work, and it can seem that Morland was prescient in anticipating that this would soon be so. To most people his work is best known for its reproduction in prints, and this reflects his very accessibility while possibly compromising his critical reputation in the long-run. This book greatly expands upon a biography of Morland issued shortly after his death in 1804, and indeed was issued on the centennial of his death. The plates in the book, including the tinted ones as well as the color ones, are of frameable quality. This copy of the book is near fine. There is minor soilage on the half vellum and the green boards they overlay. The book is impeccably clean and tight.
