Companion to the Almanac, or Yearbook of General Information (16 volumes)
1 Companion to the Almanac, or Yearbook of General Information (16 volumes)
London Charles Knight 1st Edition Hardcover Near Fine
Book. 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall. Continuous run of Knight's Companion to the Almanac from 1828 to 1858, with one index volume as well covering up to 1843. Chock-a-block with interesting information on virtually all aspects of economic, business and social affairs in Britain during reign of William IV up until the mid-Victorian era. While rich in statistical and demographic information, these volumes are much, much more, with articles that describe and analyze with rigor the issues and developments of the day. Many plates and illustrations of significant architectural and engineering projects scattered throughout. Thus this can serve as both an invaluable primary source reference for the period as well as an entertaining resource for the more casual student of English history. All volumes have been professionally recased and bound with handsome light brown calf spines, preserving Victorian marbled boards and calf spine tips. All volumes are tight and clean inside. Modern marbled endpapers. Other than wear to old calf corners, this would be a fine set.

Memorie Storiche Dell'Antichissimo Municipio Ora Terra Dell'Ariccia e Delle Sue Colonie Genzano, E Nemi, Dedicate a Sua Eccellenza Il Signor D. Agostino Chigi, Lucidi, Emmanuele
7 Lucidi, Emmanuele Memorie Storiche Dell'Antichissimo Municipio Ora Terra Dell'Ariccia e Delle Sue Colonie Genzano, E Nemi, Dedicate a Sua Eccellenza Il Signor D. Agostino Chigi
Rome Presso I Lazzarini 1796 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good
Book. 4to - over 9 - 12" tall. xii, 502 pp. Full and rich history of Ariccia and surrounding towns on the outskirts of Rome, to the Southeast of the City by Castel Gandolfo (the Papal Summer Residence). Ariccia is one of the most ancient cities in Italy, dating to at least the ninth century B.C. This history concentrates mostly on the seventeenth and eighteenth century when it was ruled by the powerful Savelli Chigi family, which produced one pope, Alexander VII, and built a grand residence in the town that has been used many a time as a movie set, such as in Visconti's "Il Gattopardo" ("The Leopard"). While it is over two millenia since the town yielded to Rome's preeminence as a city, Ariccia continued to be the next most important city in Lazio for long stretches of history owing to its propitious location on the Via Appia, the first way station on the road between Rome and Naples, and its pleasant, salubrious climate, in contrast to malalial Rome, made it a favored resort for the powerful of Rome in prior centuries. This copy of the history, a model of municipal histories in its day, is very good. There is some light and occasional foxing, yet little that could be considered disconcerting. The exception would be the four places where a prior owner presses leaves, which left a residue and in one instance, may have created a tiny wormhole type of hole. However, the small amount of loss has no effect on readability where it occurred. The vellum has an attractive mottled, almost tiger striped design. Book is tight. Occasional light pencil notes, a word or two in each case, affecting a handful of pages. Still a very good copy.

Mid-Georgian London, Phillips, Hugh
10 Phillips, Hugh Mid-Georgian London
London Collins 1964 1st Edition Hardcover Near Fine Fine Jacket Jacket
Book. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 321 pp. Profusely illustrated social and cultural history and appreciation of Hogarthian London. Delightful work captures the hustle and bustle of city during the heyday of the Kit Kat Club, Alexander Pope, George Handel, Chippendale, etc. Here find magnificent trade cards for long forgotten trades, a society both impossibly decorous by our standards yet also impossibly crude or vulgar by our lights. Recounted are such obscure events as the Earthquake of London, notorious executions, spectacular masques, etc. Phillips brings an academic rigor to his subject yet never fails to entertain or make the lively canvas as vivid as a Fielding or Richardson novel, to which this history should be an indispensable supplement. This copy would be fine on all points but for some light fox marks on the rear side foreedge which is why I describe it as near fine. DJ is fine, and now protected with mylar. Illustrations include some in color.
