Wonderful American folk art album, with much of the artwork inspired by that of Kate Greenaway. N.d., circa 1880s. Oblong, 7 by 12 cm. Unpaginated, 18 leaves, or 36 pages, almost all with original artwork. The watercolor on the front board is a bucolic fantasy of birds, sprigs with flowers amid the grass and a butterfly, and the style it embodies is repeated consistently within, with the addition of Greenaway-ish children frolicking on a number of the pages. 21 pages feature color illustration, which was also done with color pencils as well as watercolors. We believe the artist was from the vicinity of the Oranges, based on some of the cut-outs. Monograms augmented with original artwork are a small minority of surviving monogram and crest albums, and this is the first one we have come upon with an American provenance. It is also the first we have seen in such a small format. A final distinguishing point about this album is the common thread running through the artwork. The images relate to one another, in other words. Moderate wear, and soiling on the cover. A slight cock to the text block.
